What is the BEST 22lr Rifle out there?

Of the 9 CZs I have, only 1 or 2 had freefloated barrels (despite being noted as being a standard feature in CZ's literature). The ones that weren't shot fine anyway. Before you start sanding or milling anything, it is always a good check to see if the gun performs without the operation. Some guns like a barrel that doesn't touch anything, others like a little pressure here or there.

Cz's are great

I still own/shoot my cz 452 but my all time fav .22 is either my Marlin 39D or (stupidly sold) Remington 541S..... Man I miss that gun, it took so much game.

I believe that you can get that same design, but in sporter form, if you buy an Anschutz. (It won't be quite as accurate as the target versions, but should still be very accurate

Anshutz sporter actions differ from their Olympic siblings only in being repeaters. then i add a sporter weight barrel and stock. their barrels are outstanding and account for their outstanding accurrcy.

remember that the Cooper started as a clone of the Anschutz, just as Leupold scopes started as economy versions of Schmidt & Bender scopes

I don't think that's accurate, Leupold has been making scopes a lot longer than S&B. JT

From Leupold:

1947 -

Marcus Leupold misses a shot at a blacktail buck due to fogged lenses in a riflescope. According to family legend, he exclaims “Hell, I could make a better scope than this!” True to his word, he does, and Leupold enters the riflescope market with the introduction of the 2.5x Plainsman.

1949 -

Leupold employs a lesson learned making optics for the military in World War II, and becomes the first optics manufacturer to evacuate the scope interior of air and then fill it with pure nitrogen, which eliminates any chance of internal fogging. Leupold’s “weather-proofed” optics quickly become popular among sportsmen.

1957 -

Following the success of the Plainsman and other early entries in the optics market, Leupold expands its riflescope line-up even further. Their popularity in the optics market leads them to create other products for outdoors enthusiasts, including a compass.

"Since 1957, in a small town where Germany's legendary optics industry was founded hundreds of years ago, Schmidt & Bender has been devoted to one thing only: building the finest riflescope money can buy."

I like Cooper's stocks better than Anschutz'. They feel better in my hands and don't sacrifice much, if anything, in the accuracy department when it comes to a .22 rimfire for hunting small game. JT

I am looking for another rifle too. I have a CZ, Marlin, Ruger and a couple others. I am interested in the Thompson/Contender semi auto. I think it's the R-55. I've heard vague remarks that they are good. I'm not interested in a project gun. I want one that shoots. Any feed back on them or something similar?

The R-55's are good and accurate. Keep it clean around the breech. I believe I told you this before.

Sorry, lol, at my age you have to tell me a couple times before I hear you, and a couple more and I might remember.

if you think you will be using .22 shot shells at all, you may want to go with a lever or a bolt. the .22 shot doesn't have the kick to cycle an semiauto

For the money I believe the CZ 452 is the best 22 on the market. I realize there are 22s that are more accurate and some folks would say that perhaps others are more fun but the CZ 452 for the money is incredibly accurate and if accuracy is the what you are looking for, if accuracy is what makes shooting it fun then the CZ would be a great fit for anyones arsenal.

Deerhunter61; I believe the CZ 452 is a very good value for the money. The price has been increasing and the "value" is decreasing relative to the competition in nice sporter grade 22 rifles with walnut stocks.

I consider the CZ 452 and Savage Mark II Classic to be essentially an equal value for the cost new. Both are typically very accurate. The CZ will have a more "solid" feel, where as the Savage will have a more classic hunting rifle feel (sleek and accurate).

The TC R-55 is without question the best shooting semi-auto 22 rifle currently on the market out of the box. A good one may give your CZ a run for its money in the accuracy department. Your typical R-55 will shoot at least 1/2" groups at 50 yds with moderately good 22 ammunition such as Wolf Match Target. Even with Remington Thunderbolts, you should be able to keep the groups under 3/4" at 50 yds. The thunderbolt groups will likely be a loosly fitting 1/2" group with a flyer which pushes it to about 3/4" edge to edge. That is still plenty good enough for most small game hunting scenarios.
