What is the good used small SUV for going to the Range and light offroad?

Schuey2002,

I never noticed people looking strangely at me while I drove it around. But it was pretty high, and sitting in it really was "different" than anything I have ever drove before.

Maybe you guys are really ugly or something. :D

small?
small was my 89 suzuki sidekick

i could park it in places that VW Golf would pass up

great little truckling with an inline 4 that never needed anything other than oil changes
and a muffler in 60K miles

chevy sells it as the Tracker
They are built in Canada

my 2002 grand cherokee does haul a tad more
but gets ~1/2 the gas mileage
The V8 does have a bit more of a pull up hill
;)

Glad to see that THR is full of Jeep fanatics.

It is hard to talk about range and off-road vehicles without including various Jeeps. The older Cherokees (I have a 92) are seriously durable , difficult to wear out and can carry a whole mess of stuff. I have been completely satisfied with mine.

I wanted to chime in with a mopar. I had a 2001 Durango and ill tell you all it needs is a little suspension lift and it will do wonders for you offroad. I feel its only fair to mention though that these offroad vehicles should be checked over before taken them on the highway. I rolled my durango due to a firestone tire and my sister rolled a four runner both on the highway so be careful if your going to go fast with an suv.

I picked up a 1990 Jeep Cherokee for $2750. 158k miles and it's still strong. Caliper ceased up 1st day I had it street legal. Replaced it myself in 15 minutes of labor. Cost of the rebuilt caliper? A whopping $30.

Parts are cheap and plentiful. I picked the Cherokee for the economy of maintaining it, utility, and if I want to spend the $ later, off-road potential.

Har har har. :p

I washed those jeans Sunday, I haven't even looked at them though. They may not have a seat left in them. :scrutiny:

Lay off on the chili, and you'll be fine. :)

Oh, and if anyone is trying to ascribe nasty, disgusting, and foul thoughts to my previous e-mail (which I never even considered until well after I posted!), MTNBKR managed to hose his butt down pretty thoroughly with brake cleaner on Saturday...

The things some people (MTNBKR, in this case) have to endure when they're kind enough to help dumb-asses (in this case, me) with their cars... :D

And so people will understand HOW I managed to hose my butt down with brake parts cleaner...

I squatted down to stretch my legs and managed to sit on an uncapped can, spritzing my posterior with the stuff.

Sad thing is, it took me a couple seconds to realize what was going on.

:D

mtnbkr

So it got you where you live... in the ManASS...as..

(Weak, I know)

I know lots of people who have had constant problems with Cherokees. I would not buy one under any circumstances, due to the hundreds of problems I have personally heard of.

Troopers (at least some of them) have weak/soft rear differential carriers. My understanding is that aftermarket replacements are nonexistent.

Another vote for the Isuzu Trooper. That's a nice rig you have there, Glockster35! We owned a '90 model from 1991-1995 and regretted trading it away...we bought another '90 back in April for $2400.00. If I had a pic I'd post it, but it's my daily driver and is a heckuva lotta fun.

1995 Toyota T100 Extended-cab 4WD Pickup

116,000+ miles, recalled for head gasket replacement at about 80K miles. Other than expedibles (tires, battery, oil, etc.) I haven't had to do a SINGLE bit of maintenance on this pickup. No tuneups, no problems, nothing, nada....

Well, I DID do a brake job at 104,000 miles out of sheer boredom. :p (it had enough pad and shoe to go another 10K at least).

I can't say enough about the reliability of this great truck. Looking forward to another 100,000 miles.

Thanks The Front Range,

I don't own the trooper anymore. I had to sell it when I PCS'd to Germany. I do miss having it though, it was so much fun and could basically go pretty much anywhere.
