what is your defensive mindset?

My defensive mindset is that I am going to win because I am better trained, and mentally and physically prepared to do what I need to do to survive a felonious assault.

I agree with awareness being the most important tactic in self defense.
See it coming and avoiding it, especially when with your family, would be my main "tactic."
My main priority would be the well being of my family, so in an active shooter type situation where we are not the bad guys immediate focus I would have us take cover and look for an escape route.
If we were trapped, say in a store in a mall with no way out I would have my gun in a covert ready position-- i:e not visible.
I would get between the bad guy and my family and only take offensive action if he was coming at us and escape is not an option.

My defensive mindset is to win. What does winning mean? My goal is to stay alive and not necessarily “eliminating the threat”. Of course, eliminating the threat could mean removing yourself from the situation as quickly as possible.

I will do whatever it takes in order to get out of the situation as quickly as possible as safely as possible. If that means eliminating the threat(s), then that is what I will do. If that means running for my life, then that’s what I will do. I have nothing to prove to anyone. Whatever I choose to do, I will do it FAST! Most of the time speed of movement takes priority over everything else other than mindset.

And because it’s not a perfect world, have plan A, B, C, D, ….

Train hard, train often, and most of all train realistically!

Marksmanship is a hopeful skill, FIGHTING skills are a must!
Gunfighting is not a martial art. Your martial art should include “gunfighting”!

I train in a multitude of ways. My actual response is to a threat is whatever my instinct for survival tells me is the best course of action. That's a very valuable resource in a life and death situation.

My defensive mindset is pretty simple. I do what I have to.

The other night, my friend was attacked by a drunk at a bar who thought he had stolen his beer. The beer in question had been in my friend's hand for 15 minutes. It was nearly empty.

The guy had the drop on my friend and was choking him senseless. I cut in and pushed the guy off and yelled "STOP". That didn't work. He closed in on me, proving that he was either crazy or extremely drunk because I'm an avid weightlifter and outweighed him by at least 100 pounds. He reached for my throat as he did my friend, and I caught his hand, twisted his wrist sharply to the outside, and put my knee into his crotch. He crumpled up on the ground holding his broken wrist. The friends of the deranged individual came after me next, and I again shouted "STOP", but that did not work. Security was just now realizing the situation and was making their way toward us, but I had nowhere to run to and two guys similar in stature to the first attacker tried to get revenge. I threw one punch and that pretty well ended one man's will to fight, and security grabbed the other guy before he could do anything.

Security gruffly threw the three guys outside, and asked if they could speak with me outside. I agreed. They asked why I was fighting in their establishment, and I told them what had happened. A witness who was leaving the bar at the time confirmed my story, and the three guys were told to leave immediately or the police would be called.

I told them that I had to do what I had to do. I've never been in a serious fight in my entire life, and have never gone looking for the experience. I can't see why anyone would. This happened a little more than a week ago and my hand just today stopped aching. I was lucky that was all I went away with.

When people with bad intentions come your way, you should get out of there if at all possible. If it's too late for that then you have no choice. You will be killed or seriously injured if you don't have the will to act when necessary. You can train and learn new skills as much as you like, but if you don't have the courage to resort to it when you need to, it was a waste.

Stay aware and stay safe.

If safe excape is an option take it. If backed into corner without exit, I will stand an fight, surrender to an unknown is not an option as we have no idea of their intention.
Too many BG's have gone to no witnesses is better if caught.
A simple warning when your in a ready position "I've got a gun, leave now" that leads to BG's exiting home is the prefered outcome.
Bg's more than likely won't try you again and no legal issue's will follow hasty actions. But don't get me wrong if they cross that line in the sand the only thing that's left is lethal force, I'm prepared mentally.
