I didn't see 5.7x28 (.224) in the options

The caliber poll is interesting. I thought that 9mm would far exceed .45, mainly because of its low cost related popularity, apparently not. Also, .40 may be touted as "the most popular law enforcement caliber," but it seems not so much among average joes.

Let's not forget that 38, 357, 357 sig, .380 and 9mm are all the exact same size of .355 When you add them all up you get the real deal and see that the .45 caliber is an antique in today's shooting world. Just saying! Maybe that's why our military went away from them, yeah think?

for an auto-loader centerfire, my Springfield Armory GI-45
auto-loader rimfire...Ruger MKII
centerfire revolver .357 Blackhawk
rimfire revolver Single-Six 'convertible'

You should work for the government with analysis skills like that. It's a spectacular example of how to take a completely meaningless poll and twist it to suit your own agenda. The thread asks "what's your favorite pistol?" and the poll erroneously asks "what caliber is your favorite pistol?". The poll's question is erroneous because the choices are cartridges. Is there a correlation between a person's favorite pistol and their favorite cartridge or caliber? Does this poll address that issue ... no!! Then we have your interpretation, taking the votes for four cartridges but then trying to fit that "data" to one cartridge. In addition, you then try to use your interpretation to make a comment about the use and popularity of another cartridge that happened to get more votes than your favorite. You then end with a ridiculously uninformed comment that the .45 caliber (which includes the .45 ACP and .45 Colt among others) is an "antique" in today's shooting world. PATHETIC!!

Here we go again with another forum expert. The 45 ACP has the worst trajectory of all the handgun calibers. I did work for the Government for many years, thank you for asking. That's why we scrapped them for military general use back in 1988. Ballistics are terrible as it was designed as a short range trench weapon for WWI in Europe. Well it isn't 1911 and we are not fighting WWII anymore either. We did find out that the (.32) 7.625 was a nasty weapon from the Germans and Russians and had tremendous penetration and killing power the hard way. The . 45 could not even go through a phone booth not to mention a car door and it bounced off windshields like marbles. I saw 3 Pea coats stop a .45. The 7.625 zipped right through them like butter. The Europeans filed many a grave and NEVER made a .45 caliber pistol until recently.

You'd better send a memo to the folks in the USMC's MEU then ... tell them to watch out for bad guys wearing three Pea coats.

Wise men speak when they have something to say. Fools speak because they have to say something

I didn't come through 2 wars and years on the mean streets by being a fool. Only age brings wisdom and from your sarcasm it is plain to see you have a long way to go and learn.

I voted .45 acp because that is my primary defensive round.

But, I reeeeally like .45 Colt and the round I've had the most fun shooting, old and expensive, is .44-40. Guess I shoulda been a cowboy.

Favorite for protection, is a Ruger Security Six .357 mag. It has served it's purpose as a defensive weapon very well.
Crazy coke head armed robber, wild pit bull attacking neighbor lady, wild hog too close to get a rifle on him.

But my favorite just to own is a Colt 1911 that my grandfather purchased from a hardware store in Henderson, Texas in 1918. No box, but do have the original reciept in a safety deposite box at the bank. Price $23.00.

That's a tough one.
If I had to reduce the flock to one, the H&K P-30 would be the last to go.
It just does everything well.
But I also like my Sig 238 for easy carry, and my Seecamp .32 because it's cool.

The .357, but its a revolver and not a pistol.
Great for deer, targets, and a treat to fondle.
