If you spend any amount of time on any gun/knife/flashlight/Chinese throwing star forum, you will soon stumble across a SHTF post. Be it either what caliber... or what rifle... or what garlic spray... Don't get me wrong, I like to prepare for the Zombie invasion with a 50 lbs. BOB just as much as the next gun loving idiot, but are we really serious? If the SHTF today, I'd stay home! I don't buy a rifle depending on how many rounds I can carry, I buy it because I like it. I live about 2 miles outside of Grand Rapids, which is a decent sized city. If everyone was getting out, I'd stay, have you seen the traffic jams when EVERYONE is fleeing. Now think about your family, does your plan include small children? I'm just wondering if we plan for the what if, but overlook the realistic?

I have schematics for a "Panic room" not unlike the ones used by Jews in WW2 for if/when the government comes to take us.

But im probably an irrational fool. :)

As I would like to have an "Earth Roamer" with remotely controlled vulcan type weapons with endless fuel and towing the HMMV for grocery trips. I guess I only have a wee lil bit that will let me make a small effort at a very short last stand somewhere I hope a ways from home.
My best option for survival would be the fast run if I get warning. That run is over 1k miles with a vehicle that might not make 500mi with everyones wardrobe thrown in.

irrational?
With the death of Posse Comitatus and total adandonment by a super majority of Americans for the .gov's safety and security we are going to witness wholesale insanity by hordes.
Atzlan is real because people believe it. For right or wrong.
The 2nd in the bill of rights is the least protected and completely worthless to many many millions of Americans who take it for granted.

The "realistic" most likely involves blizzards, floods, tornadoes and earthquakes.
Regardless, the tasks involved in being prepared for loss of power and water, medical emergencies, and possibly the breakdown of social order, are nearly identical.

+1 to that

If the SHTF today, I'd stay home!

Except in a NOL situation where you have massive flooding, that is the best procedure.

50lbs... "are we serious"... no anyone who thinks that they can hump 50lbs cross country in a hurry who is not an experienced hiker, in good shape, with a very well maid pack and good boots is flat out kidding themselves. People also forget... water weighs 8.33lbs per gal, and on that type of march, you are going to use a lot of water.

Well, if it does hit the fan, it won't go very far. I turned the fan off. It's winter, man. Just open the window. The fan is not needed. Save electricity!

Sorry. I just HAD to say that.:D

My fan has a tight wire guard that should prevent most s*** from reaching the blades. I would still have to clean it off the carpet so I would not be happy, but better than off the walls. I also don't put the fans in the bathroom any more. That helped alot.

As Atticus said, in my area(OK) it's mostly concerns about weather incidents: ice storms in winter and God's vacuum cleaner coming through in the rest of the year.

Although if something nasty happens at Tinker AFB...

My worst case SHTF scenario is this:

This coming summer, its stiflingy hot, its muggy. Global warming has gone from contrived liberal scare tactic to painful reality. The A/C is broken. I'm lying on my hammock in the shade. I have a drag cord run across the yard. Its powering a large fan which gives me my only comfort of the day. My neighbor comes over while I'm napping to return to me something that one of my dogs has left in his yard. He trips over the drag cord and falls, dropping the returned 'parcel' onto the fan. This, of course, wakes me up. My first thought is "Damn, I should have used the orange drag cord rather than the green one." My second thought is "Part of me wants to shoot him right now for dropping all that s*** on my new fan. Which gun would I use and how much ammo do I have stockpiled for it?"

Of course, I wouldn't actually shoot him, because that just wouldn't be THR thing to do. But the thought would be there.

Pretty much the blizzard that hit SE colorado about the first of the year. But hey i do love to read the threads of what others are doing to repell zombies and blue helmits lol .

Before Thread Lock:
1) all fans will be removed from the house. Then the mess will be outside where it belongs

2) I will no longer associate with fan owners.

3) I will no longer associate with !@#* slingers also

4) I will hoard stain remover. Gotta keep them clothes spotless!

Seriously though, whenever I hear about the contents of people's survival kits, I never hear this: Sewing kit! Yes, during TEOTWAWKI, when your fly separates from your pants, I will gladly whip out my kit, do a poor job reattaching it, and charge you all your unfired ammo for it too!:D

Localized or Geographic SHTF are weather, geographic etc. Prepare for them as if you were going to be camping without power in your house for a long time etc. The goal is physical survival. The risk from criminal activity is elevated but not extreme.

Regional/national SHTF are major economic upheavals, depression, civil unrest across statewide and geographic regions. Prepare for these the same as localized scenarios and add mucho weapons, ammo, barter goods etc. You must be able to fend for yourself 100% for the foreseeable future. Risks from violence is extreme, this includes criminals as well as former honest people who turn to violence from lack of preparation. A Bugout destination that is easily defended is a big plus as is a neighborhood defense cooperative ala
"lights out".

World wide/global SHTF....Species ending asteroids, wide spread Nuclear exchange, pandemic/biowar scenarios. For these all bets are off. Survival is basically a crap shoot. You may not even wish to survive. Recomendations include bending over and osculating your posterior farewell.

The best way to prepare for SHTF mentally is to remember, nobody lives forever. I just want to improve my odds
not work a miracle.

I plan for severe storms that mess up basic infrastructure (floods, tornados, etc) but one of my best friends stocks up for the "Zombacalypse". He says thats when the Zombies rise and take over the world.

Hehehe.

We all laugh but he as more ammo than I do :uhoh:

TRL

SHTF?

Hurricane season down here on the Gulf. Way too quiet last year, this year might be tense.

But I figure another couple of cases of Brown Bear will see me through - or Wolf MC :>

LOL

I saw on cafepress.com a T-shirt that simply says:

"You'll thank me when the zombies come" across the front.

Another said:

"When the zombies come, you'll be the first to go."

The best (alien invasion theme, I suppose):

"I'm totally going to betray you to our future alien masters."

I need these to wear to family functions. Its a life's work to me to insure my sister believes I am nuts.

SHTF - Cascadia Quake

This is what I expect in my locale. Big, big storms come and go, but the Cascadia quake is coming, someday, and is about due. For me, it means keeping my jeep full of fuel should the Tsunami flood up the Columbia and Willamette Valleys. I can hit high ground in a matter of minutes, but I may have to navigate through some fields to do it. The traffic is already nasty here, I can imagine gridlock beyond belief. I live in some fairly low land, so abandoning the home may be a real concern, but still is not likely.

Beyond that, I try to keep a few days worth of kerosene around for the Kerosun heater. That little bugger rocks and I can heat my uninsulated double car garage with it, it can keep the house plenty warm and a single room downright skivvies only toasty.

As far as defense concerns, I have that covered with plenty of semiautos should that need arise. And I'm fairly in line with my neighbors in this front, so watching out for each other would be a coordinated effort. We all have 4x4 rigs, so escaping by a non-traditional route could be a reality if the water does not moat us in in our area.

Food, got plenty, but losing power means no fridge, so this could be an issue. We have large coolers that would get us by, but for extended time I think we'd need to score some dry ice. BBQ is almost always topped on propane and the wife keeps plenty of meat in the freezer. Loss of power would mean a big cookout to prevent a big loss. We always have several days if not two weeks worth of food on hand. I think I'll be fine, but then again, you can't think of everything.

I don't live in the city proper or even close to it, I'm a suburbs guy, so should anarchy and chaos break out, it will be me and my neighbors banding together. And I think we all have enough firearms to form a nice perimeter should it really come down to that. Black semiautos appear much more menacing to would be looters than bolt guns.

But then again, if Katrina is any indicator, CCW will be key because the police and national guard will want to come take them from me. I don't think I'll answer the door.

I don't buy a rifle depending on how many rounds I can carry, I buy it because I like it.
Different people buy different weapons for different things.
Its pretty
Its cheap and so's the ammo
I have a pest problem
I need meat to put on the table
I like hunting ducks
I like hunting coyotes
I like hunting bears
I live in a bad part of town
Its my right
For when texas turns back into mexico
To prepare for TEOTWAWKI
etc. etc. etc.
You can buy a rilfe because you like it, and I'll buy mine because it can hit a flea on a horse's a$$ at 400 yards. I'm just saying... why does it matter why people buy their weapons? If everyone else is buying life rafts because its flooding, and you decide not too, it doesn't make buying rafts wrong.
