For those of you who drifted into shooting from other hobbies, or frequent forums for other hobbies where you've promoted shooting sports:

What other hobbyists are likely to cross over to shooting?

Hikers, car enthusiasts, gamekids, paintballers, bicyclists?

-MV

Knife enthusiasts. It almost seems like if you enjoy one its automatic that you will enjoy the other.

I'd say gamers and paintballers, for a few reasons.

Gamers, because most gamers nowadays aren't kids, and most of the combat type games are marketed towards young adults. Also, games now are really action heavy, and have a LOT to do with firearms. Hollywood could learn a thing or two from the videogame industry, in terms of realism. Depending on what type of games you play, you can learn perfect sight picture, a little bit about sniping and leading, and different weapons/platforms/ammunition, etc. all from playing video games... everything but trigger control, really. If you've played video games recently, you know I'm not exaggerating.

I also think paintballers eventually catch on because the very essence of that hobby is basically war-gaming. I'm the only guy I know anymore who's never gone paintballing. Now I always thought this was just a little inexpensive hobby, and I've always wanted to go... until I looked into it. First of all, I could buy a quality pistol (used) for what some of those paintball guns cost. Secondly, some of those guys really know their stuff - I met a couple guys down at school earlier this year who talk about paintball guns like we oooh and aaah over the newest offerings from S&W or Wilson Combat, etc. They talk about lightening their triggers and tweaking their guns just like we do. It's kind of amusing.

And most of them are into guns already anyway. Interesting question, MV. I'm curious to see what kind of answers you get from other folks.

I agree with the knives. I am a hardcore knife lover and actually found this forum through bladeforums, and one thing lead to another and now I own 8 guns(after 3 months of reading) and too many knives...dont even get me started on my flashlight problem.

Definitely Knife Collectors. Also Flashlight collectors seem to drift into the firearms world, I see guns mentioned a lot on candlepowerforums.

Campers, Survivalists, martial artists, and archers all would probably have interest in firearms.

Definitely all the 4x4 types I know are as well as most of the folks on a motorcycle site I'm on all the time. socalsportriders We do group shoots several times a year and there are a few of us that have turned into real range rats as of late.

ummmm... me and my gun buddy come from a different genre...

He is a hair-stylist by day, and him and his wife make wedding cakes by night. A member of his Bishoprich (mormon church position) got him into the idea of CCW.

He then got me into CCW. I fit a little better... I was a computer gamer. But I work as a graphic designer.

Knife and EDC gadget lovers. It's a natural progression, once you start getting that "most effective" mindset: brightest flashlight, sharpest knife, most effective SD implement...the firearm.

Horses..........guns. Guns......horses. Hmmm. The Good Lord gave us HORSES so that we would have something comfortable to ride around on while looking for things to shoot with our LEVER GUNS! Life is good. :D

How about the reverse of...

The first thing that popped into my mind was "historical war reenactor" being as how it's a major part of my life. But then it quickly dawned on me that actually it's more like the other way around. Almost all reenactors I know come from a firearms background already and that interest coupled with a love of history led them into reenacting.

Car (truck) enthusiasts. Many of the guys in my club are avid gun guys. They also seem to be able to help other guys out with their choices, laws, etc. Seems there is a gun thread every couple weeks or so.

I would say that getting into the gun hobby is probably the next "evolution" or step up for Paintballers.

Second would prpbably be Gamers. Again, its almost like natural progression of sorts.

And third.....maybe someone who is a machinist.

definetely paintballer. if you are into guns you paintball. if your into paintball, your into guns. reminds me of when i played paintball with the USMC guys.... i would not want to be on their team in Iraq

Let's reverse the question......

What hobbies have us gunners drifted into?

For me, it was offroading 4x4's.

Car guys, theres at least 2 threads a month about what new gun someone bought on my favorite car forum.

Airsoft. When the plastic toys aren't fun anymore. :D

And also anime fans. The Japanese are downright FANATICAL about rendering real-world guns in exacting detail in the high-quality features, and usually prominently display a number of brands and models you can buy. Everything from CZ2000's to Jerichos to Matebas to Desert Eagles to custom racegun 1911s have been featured, closeup, with all the right parts, operation and slide markings. One series even featured sawed-off M1 Garand "mare's legs" and a custom-made longslide 1911 in .454 Casull.

I'll second (or third, whatever) the motorcycle comments. Nearly every motorcyclist I know (myself included) has at least a passing interest in guns. My old shooting buddy is also my motorcycling buddy.
