Do I need Large Pistol or Large Magnum Pistol Primers for 44 Mag, W296, 240 XTPs?

I would and do use magnums for any cartridge using W296/H110. Not to say regular primers won't work; they likely will but may not be 100% reliable especially in very cold weather. Not really a safety issue except that if you do experience a misfire, don't fire another without checking the barrel for a possible stuck bullet (as always). If you can get magnums, it isn't worth the risk to use something else IMO. And yes, either way a good firm crimp as Troy mentions.

I suggest using the primer specified in the pressure tested data source. All the 44 Mag ones I recall seeing with W296 specify a Magnum primer.

the winchester Large pistol primer/magnum primers works for me.. which is why i chose that primer when i did my LPP order a year ago.

Hodgdon's online data for 44 Mag and 296/H110 uses Remington 2 1/2 primers (Remington does not make a Magnum pistol primer sm or lg). When I was playing with it H110 and 240gr bullet I use Winchester Large Pistol primers and it work fine and gave me decently consistent velocity. I found 800x was a better powder for 240 gr bullets giving me the same velocity with significantly well muzzle blast and no flash from a revolver. I have pretty much reserved my H110 for 450 Bushmaster and 410 shotgun loads.

Hornady's 10th Handbook shows Winchester WLP primers for all their 44 Remington Magnum handgun load data including loads with Winchester 296 powder, and including the 240 grain XTP bullet with Winchester 296 powder.

Winchester doesn't offer a specific Magnum primer in large pistol size.

Speer's 15th manual 44 Remington Magnum load data shows CCI 350 Large Magnum Pistol primers with Winchester 296 powder and Speer .429 240 grain jacketed lead core soft point and hollow point bullets.

Winchester large pistol are designed to be both
Federal, and others have regular and magnum

H110 / Win296 works best with max loads, you also want a FIRM ROLL CRIMP
