How truly conservative I am, especially being a CA native :scrutiny: Oh, and how much I really enjoy shooting DA revolvers ;)

In the last year how much I'v gotten into blackpowder. Almost to
the exclusion of all my other guns.If you like history, try blackpowder.

I'v not tried flintlocks yet, but I can see that Kentucky rifle in my future.

How small most gun people sound in reviews and articles. I'm only 5' 10'' and 130 lbs, but most of what gun reviews describe as "too large" (i.e. the M9 frame or AR15A2 buttstock) strikes me as just right.

Couldn't have imagined 10 years ago that I'd have a hankering for 1903 Colt 32.

Or that I'd be thinking about buying enough guns to play cowboy all over again.

:D

Or that (gasp) it did occur to me that NO Colt collection is complete with out an AR type of rifle.:uhoh: That's about the only reason I'd buy one, is to get the little horsey on the rifle.

What surprised me?

How sensitive I am to loud noises. I LOVE shooting guns, but I can't take the noise of other shooters around me. Nothing screws me up at the range more than someone shooting anything other than a 22 or 38 next to me. Tough problem to have if you like guns...

My surprise...

...came when i considered how my shooting time has been cut back. I shot almost every other weekend ten years ago. My kids are grown and moved out. My wife and I have more time, but I get to shoot less! :(
Something just wrong about this situation!
Mark.

my two (to me) major "gun interest" surprises are at what i'll call "opposites end of the spectrim"

first how i actually DID wind up having a hankering for an AR-15 (have none now but hope to have 3-4 as soon as i can) grew up looking at the AR/M-16 family as "neat guns bt not for me" most modern military type gun i had a yearning for untill about 4 years ago was an M-1A/M-14.

the other is how much Black powder arms intrigue me, both BP cartridge and muzzle stuffers, still want a BPCR silhouette "ready" Sharps, and a whitworth repro....

The two things that suprised me the most:
1. That I am more accurate with a auto than with a rifle. Granted, I can hit the target with a rifle, but my groups are smaller when shooting my BHP versus any of my rifles.
2. Found out that I would actually pull the trigger on another human being, if it came down to the bottom line, him or me. He drew the short straw. Enough said.

What continues to surprise me is how much I enjoy shooting rifles.

I shoot handguns more often, own more handguns, and am much more proficient with handguns. Most of my firearm accessories and reading material are handgun oriented.

But I have yet to finish a handgun range session with the glow I get after putting a couple of boxes downrange from my FAL, or after running a couple of hundred rounds through my CZ452.

What surprises me most about myself gun wise?... That I haven't shot my foot off yet!

{Gee, Master, if Gunslinger45 shoots his foot off, can I have it?}

{I think Gunslinger45 might want it reattached if he shoots it off, Igor.}

{Gee, Master, I do so want his foot.}

{Well, Igor, maybe if you ask him nicely he might give it to you.}

{Do you really think so, Master?}

{No, you silly hunchback! Now go play with your spiders.}

How, after 60 some years of playin with em, I still totally enjoy rifles, shotguns, handguns, machineguns and slingshots.

Horses, boats, mocycles, trick cars, airplanes etc have come, flaired and gone.

The pleasure of gunning has stayed.

That, growing up in a liberal gun-fearing household, I would come to realize that the RKBA was not just intended for the National Guard, that gun owners were not all nuts (a lot of them, but not all ), that I would own and carry one myself, and that I would become a strong advocate of Second Amendment rights and even agree with the evil NRA from time to time.
Ditto, minus the carry (I live in Maryland). However, I always had an interest in guns, figured I'd "probably" own a rifle or target pistol someday. I thought the 2nd was for the National Guard/organinzed militia (state sponsored), though I granted that there was a "defacto" "right" to guns based on our history and tradition. I considered myself for "moderate, sane controls" (yeah I know better now) and thought assult rifles shouldn't be in civilian hands (though I bought the common misconception that these weren't just normal semi-autos, I believed what the anti groups told us about how easy they were to convert to autos, and I thought that "assult rifles" modified to be impossible to make full-autos should be ok), handguns should be registered (but I was magnanimous enough to think they should be allowed) and rifles and shotguns should be registered and waitlisted as well. Thank G-d I grew out of that!

I'm also with those who originally thought he'd only own one handgun (a revolver). Then maybe one of each major type (pistol, revolver), then one of each major type redefinded (small concealable revolver, small concealable pistol, full-sized of each), then redefined again, redefined again, then finally giving up and figuring I'd buy what I want. Probably related to the first surprise.

Another big surprise is how much I like autos. At first I thought it would be revolver only. While as a class I do prefer revolvers, I sometimes have more autos, sometimes my favorite individual gun is an auto and I usually shoot them more.

The biggest surprise is how much I love handguns. I thought I'd be a rifle guy and own almost nothing but rifles. I still enjoy a centerfire rifle most, but I hardly ever get to the rifle range. It just isn't as convenient and I have really come to love my handguns.

Surprised ?

I'm surprised how much of a cheap skate I am! I love to cast bullets and then shoot them! 95% of all of my shooting is with cast bullets. The only time I shoot jacketed bullets is in the 22 cal varmint rifles and some in my M1 and Ruger 30-06 deer Rifles. Also shoot jacketed only in my Old Model Ruger 44 Mag rifles. Haven't shot them in a couple of years now. :D About 99% of my handgun shooting and all the rest of my Rifle shooting is with the cast bullets! :D

Me? Hardly ANYTHNG surprises me anymore. I sort of edited surprise out of my personality.

Not wonder, mind you, but flabbergas, say.

For real, I'm a lot like 10ring. I'm pretty durn conservative for a Palo Alto whiteboy. Got me a liberal eddicashun 'n evrything, but overcame it. Mom wasn't anti-gun by any means, but she didn't approve of her kids PLAYING with toy guns. Now she kinda likes my hobby. My dad hated hunting with his dad, so he broke that cycle, I missed Grandpa's guns, and I don't hunt. He likes to go shooting with me though.

Like DA revo's, too. Not a surprise, there though. I like OLD stuff. Wheelguns exemplify that.

Considering my upbrining, I oughta be a virulent anti, or I shoulda bought a gun when I was 18. I bought my first rifle when I was 26, and didn't get a handgun until a year later, as gun #4. It's a surprise how much I like the silly things, thouygh. I started reading about 'em, and the more I learned, the more guns I needed. Now I have about 60, and I need at least 40 or 50 more. For now.

I like my Glock 32 a whole bunch. That's a lid flipper. Into blued steel and walnut, really, but that thang shoots like no tomorrow.

Found out I enjoy the ergonomics and feel of full-size S&W autos. That confuses some people, I know.

I love single-shots. Found out they never rn outta ammo. No stopping to load the durn thing up, just open, close, shoot, repeat.

Top of the list is I have NO USE for black rifles. Can't stand the ergonomics. Think they's ugly and not in a nice oddgun way. Think autoloaders are ammo-munchers. Only own the autos I have by accident, except my odd-as-nutz Remington M-81's, and my french MAS 49/56, which is my idea of a battle rifle since I can't afford an M-14 yet.

My preference for odd guns is easy. I'm a nonconformist. I like what's different BECAUSE it's different.

I've always liked military, tactical and class 3 firearms - handguns, MGs, ARs, AKs and FALs for me.

About 10 years ago I got into clay shooting - skeet, trap and sporting and now own 2 doubles and a semi shotgun - who would've thought?

I'm a left-handed person who is still relatively good with her right hand. I wasn't too surprised to find I can shoot rifles either way (though I am left-eyed).

But shooting pistols right-handed is HARD. And feels really wierd.

...try as I will, I find that shooting a revolver accurately seems beyond me.

...my wife is becoming more accepting of having firearms in the house.

...I haven't sold my soul for an M-1 Carbine or Browning 9MM...yet.

...that I really like auto pistols.I thought I was a revolver only guy...
I'm the exact opposite.

When I started shooting I couldn’t imagine ever owning a revo. They were old technology, slow to shoot, low capacity, slow to reload, bulky to conceal and just plain stodgy.

I now have over 20 revolvers in the safe. I'm carrying a 2 1/2" Python (No bulk there! Nope! :eek: :rolleyes: :eek:)

Also, I am constantly amazed at my ability to reconcile, rationalize and accept the dichotomy of my liberal social views with my rabid support of Second Amendment rights--and general Constitutionalist views. They live in harmony within me. Hoooda thunkit??

That after spending a good chunk of my life being a one pistol, one deer rifle and one shotgun man that I would end up spending 10 years collecting antique Brit rifles and then get one of those C&R licenses (hey, they were cheap!) and now be adding a WHOLE DEDICATED GUN ROOM onto the house!!!:what: Almost as surprised as finding out that real authors will actually PAY YOU MONEY for doing gun research!:D

I guess I've found that I like certain models of all types of guns. I guess that's surprising to me cuz I thought at one time that I was just a one type of gun person.

That as much as I try to be the M-14 and 1911 wielding all-American, it just doesn't fit me.

Skunk, an M14 is almost as big as you are. :neener:

Surprised to learn that you never know what you can do until you try.

Hit a man-sized target at 100 yards with a tiny P-11? First try? Who woulda thunk it.
