The 1911 A1?
The Glock?
The Sig Sauer?

Note my title "type of" pistol. Don't get upset that your specific brand and model of semi auto isn't mentioned. For example if your gun of preference is a Springfield XD, then don't say "You forget Springfield XD? I can't vote." Just vote for Glock. If it is a Berretta 92, pick Sig Sauer. Also, don't ask "what kind of 1911, there are lots of them?" I am talking about the 1911 design in general, not Colt or Springfield or Kimber et al specifically.

All american 1911 .45 ACP hammered gun style, the foreign hammerless Glock .45 GAP/40 S&W (EDIT: thanks bodu :D) style, or the foreign Double Action Sig Sauer 9mm/.357 style is what I am focusing on here.

I hear a lot of generalizations about how, "1911 is for pot bellied old men, Glock is for cops in their 30s." I have a hunch, the 1911 is more popular in general than some people think. Most of my friends (all well below the age of 50) prefer the 1911 and like it as a fine piece. See a lot of people my age prefering it over the glock .40 I am 29 btw.

1911's are not jam o matics. Just a guess but 95 years of service with little or no change to the design would tend to indicate reliability.

glocks are ok, sigs are nice, but a GI .45 is the chevy 350 of handguns. (for the record I'm a mopar man) its powerfull, reliable, easy to work on, and easy to find parts for.

I'd take the glock over the sig and especially over any jamomatic 1911.
the best semi automatic pistol is HK, in case you don't know.

I recently purchased my first 1911, a slightly used Springfield Armory GI with a few aftermarket add ons. Oddly, this "jammomatic" 1911 has fed FMJ, JHP, and LSWCs without a hitch. Based on your criteria I'll lump my BHP into the 1911 category and say it deserves another vote for JMB designed single action autos.

For the options given, I'd say 1911 with Sig a very close second and Glock not even playing in the same league as the other two (I'd put HK, CZ, and Walther ahead of Glock, for instance) -- but that's personal preference and opinion. YMMV.

You also can get a sig model to behave like both, or either, of the other two.

Sir, please enlighten me. Is there a safety lever available for SIGs that allows them to be carried C&L? I know that some H&K variants have a 3 position lever, but I'd be interested if something similar was available for SIGs.

Doug.38PR, you need to learn a bit more about handgun types, and then try your poll with "Single-action", "Double-action/single-action", "Double-action only", or "other".

Trying it using brand names will only cause a fight. A big one.

( For what it's worth, I like single-action pistols, but ain't real crazy about 1911's... )

the only people that think 1911s are jam-o-matics have not tried a bone stock out of the box pistol from a decent manufacturer (Llama/Firestorm doesn't count).

You can't make a standard DA/SA SIG into a C&L SA, but as of April of this year you can buy a SA SIG:

Checked out the link, interesting pistol, but I wish retained the decock for versatility or had something like the SFS that FN offers on Hi-Power. Pretty neat though, in a few years when they're more available on the used market I might try one out. I also agree on Mr. David Cooke's comments on the topic.

I am a revolver guy at heart, but 1911's are fantastic when done right. That said I keep a Glock close all the time. Never really warmed up to the ergonomics of the Sigs, but they are a fine gun all the same.

Each 'type' has enough strong points to make a darn good case for it, enough so that discussion is mainly for us to hear ourselves talk (type).......

Had to cast my vote for the Sig. I've never met a Sig I didn't like.

I love 1911's, but they ain't Sigs.

I'm not impressed with Glocks. Personally, I think their triggers are unpleasant, I'm not fond of the grip, and I'm not that accurate with them. I think they're good guns. I just think Sigs are better.

I've held a few sigs and shot a couple glocks and even more 1911s... the sig seems like a great gun and i would have one already, but I just don't like the way it feels in my hand. I think my hands are too small for it or something. Other than that i'm sure they are excellant guns. Glocks are very utilitarian and are superbly reliable and i like them alot, but the glock 21 is also a huge chunck of pistol. The 1911 fits my hand as close to perfect as i've ever felt except for a Colt SAA. I really wish glock would make a full sized single stack .45.. i'd buy that in a heartbeat. Until then, i'll take my 1911.

Also i've not felt anything close to a 1911 trigger on any auto.
