"No Country for Old Men" it's on Pay per view, i watched it two times last night, again, I saw it when it first came out, but was able to pick up on many subltle interesting additions. I see a Remington 1187 with some kind of can. Watch it if you can, Tommy Lee looks like he's wearing a Colt, in a Galco slide type holster. The Deputy has a wheel gun, probablly a Ruger. Saw the "bad Guys" had an assortmant of auto weapons, I remember a mach 10 and what appeared to be a BAR, type weapon on the ground, may be wrong, and was that an H&K he took of the dead guy, or an SKS, what did you all see ? I just pulled this up doing a search, "They've been using "moderators (you'll see in the link)" on shotguns for years over in the UK. Oddly enough under the auspices of them being a public service in noise reduction. They are popular with fowl hunters., they are very effective, as least the samples I have heard myself. They make it very pleasant to shoot, more of a very low-pitched whoosh than a shot. It's definitely not recognizable as a gun shot, and if you're outside of probably 100 yards, you won't hear it at all.", and this," We have demonstrated to a number of gun clubs, including several professional shooting ground estates. Not one person was anything other than amazed by its performance, low noise and recoil, even with standard velocity cartridges.
I pasted all of this stuff in for our members to see if they were interested as I was

We are convinced that we have a product range that will protect your shooting from objections through noise, and will allow clay shooting facilities to be used more - possibly for floodlit shooting - since you will no longer cause local disturbance. The simple reason is that noise reduction characteristics are so significant that, in normal topography, the sound is not audible above background noise even at 150 meters with the single shot Pedretti, and 300 meters with the Hushpower conversion to semi-autos & pumps contrast this with the normal 12 bore which can be heard in still air at 1.5 Kilometres.

I almost cried when Llewelyn chopped the barrel on the Winchester 97 Shotgun. And Chigurh uses either the cattle bolt or the suppressed 1187 all through the movie. BTW, the movie was faithful to the book. Good read.

I hear you. THe first time I watched that scene, I wondered what kind of idiot would destroy a perfectly good old Winchester pump gun.

On closer inspection, however, it appears they used a long-barrel Chinese repro. :D

+1 on the book being a good read. The plot just moves right along, and it seems like every chapter has a gun fight or some dastardly deed being committed. A good book to take a on a flight.

Were the firearms proper for the early 1980s time period? When did the Tec 9 come out?

I didn't think the firearms seemed all that appropriate to the time period. The rifle Llewellyn was using to hunt antelope was a Remington 7 or 700, but it had a laminated stock like you'd find on a current Model 673 (or maybe a 7). Maybe it was a 673, with the rib removed. It didn't look anything like an "old" laminated stock. The scope he was using also had very "modern" appearing target turrets on it. Personally, I think he should have been using an old 700 BDL with the old "high gloss" polyurethane finished stock with an old steel tube Weaver V9 with adjustable objective.

When he walks up on the dead drug dealers, I saw at least two AK's. I could be wrong, but AK's weren't all that easy to obtain in the US (legal or illegal) at that time. Seems like they would have been more likely to have had some old M3's (grease guns) or some old M2 carbines.

Semi AK's were all over the place in the mid 80's just no one wanted them :) Not trying to be funny, I remember seeing the things for sale all the time but there just wasn't much market.

Could be. I was thinking this was early 80's setting. The reason I mention it is because it was pretty hard to get much of anything, be it tools/clothes/whatever from behind the "iron curtain" at that time. Not impossible, just more difficult. Watching old episodes of Hawaii Five-0, etc., seems like they often bust out an "Enforcer" stocked M1 carbine when they want an "assualt rifle".
