what would be everyones, go to rifle.

I would have to say one of my 16" AR's. My new Colt Federal Patrol Carbine is a pretty good all arounder as is my DD DDM4 V7.

The .223/5.56 is not perfect for everything, but it will work for most.

It is not glamorous or nostalgic choice, but is functional, durable, and works.

Hard choice. I have a Marlin 1895 Cowboy in 45/70 or the ol 336 in 30/30. I carry them in the truck often. I even have a Mossberg Shockwave and keep #8 shot in the truck too. Buckshot didn’t work as well on rattlesnakes I catch crossing the court road.

As for the Mini 14, would it be good for a "Hoodie", "Can't say no to it" alligator from 30' - 40' ? If whichever .223 bullet (you choose) can penetrate that dinosaur's skull at oblique angles, then I might say yes.

Maybe with a Red Dot scope, the Mini (same ammo) could do equal damage to a feral pig🐷 as seen from this little Robinson helicopter? Or maybe from your "War Chariot of the Third World", a Toyota Hilux; this context might require explanation.

My preferred compact, lighweight rifle (even though all 58 receivers are Milled-how can it be light?), if a "Run From" = "Go To". :)

from " Forgotten Weapons" with Ian McCollum. Mine was produced in 2019 in the capitalist Czech Republic.🇨🇿
At 11:22 Ian explains that the bolt uses the Locking Piece to go into Battery just like in the Walther P38. At 11:55 he shows how the 'tongue' raises the Locking Piece, allowing the bolt/carrier to move aft (= to the rear).

I almost never keep a long gun in my vehicle nor store any firearm there. But if I'm traveling I'll often take a couple of long guns with me, mostly to use at my destination. Normally this is one or both of the PWS rifles that are nearly identical save for caliber. One is .300 Blackout and the other .223 Wylde. Both have WMLs by Cloud Defensive and each is set up with an Aimpoint (one a Comp M5, the other a Duty RDS- both on Scalarworks mounts). I'm partial to .300 Blackout as it's more fun to shoot and does everything I need a carbine to do but the .223 Wylde has the advantage of cheaper ammo, and easier resupply if necessary.

I have seat covers on the rear bench seat in my Tundra. I carry a canvas lined rifle case which is padded relatively thin. This slips in under the seat cover on the back, not in the seat portion. When you open the door all you barely see is the very end of the case.
I put a Winchester 94 30-30 16” trapper or a Browning 92 in 44 mag. These flat sided rifles slide right in and out without pulling the case out and a person can sit there without out hardly ever knowing something is there.
Anyway that’s my truck gun setup

For around the homestead I’ll keep the Browning 92 44 mag with 265 grain Hornady’s behind the door. If I’m out and about locally I’ll take the B92 44 or a Winchester 94 30-30. If I’m headed to be out in big Bear areas I’ll take my 1895 marlin.
I don’t hunt anymore so open sights for the up close and personal possibilities is about as good as it gets.

We've never encountered or heard about two-legged predators in our area of the Maine woods. When I go for walks down back, outside of deer season, I often carry my .223 Bolt-action Remington 700ADL that was on-sale at Home Depot a couple of years ago. There area others I could choose, but this gun was dirt-cheap yet shoots really great with a Leupold 3-9X scope on it. Like all my rifles, I've pillar-bedded it and adjusted the trigger, so it's really sweet, even though I got it at a "close-out" price at Home Depot(?). She shoots really well and carries even better. It's shot a few critters, namely a couple of coyotes and a woodchuck in the back yard and/or fields down back. I have several other rifles that work as well, but this one's a great truck gun that I don't worry about taking out on "varmint" dates. Photo: The one on the bottom.

For the purposes you list, of the guns I own, I would probably choose my fathers Remington 7600 in 30-06 or my Sig Spear in 300 BLK.

The stainless lever action in 45/454 lever action would be a great all purpose rifle but I don't own one.

My Noveske 13.7” AR with Eotech and 3x magnifier and my LMT 16” MRP with Aimpoint T2 and 3x magnifier are tied for top dog in my house. If I have a bigger problem to manage, the decision goes to the SCAR 17S NRCH with Trijicon TA01 green crosshair. The 5.56s get 77 grain ammo as they are most accurate with those. The SCAR is fed my home-rolled M80 ball that’ll manage 1.5 MOA out of that rifle.

Actually an easy question. My go to rifle since the late 80's is a numbers matching (including the numbered stock)
SKS. I've run 1000's of rounds thru it in the over 40 yrs I've owned it and not a single hiccup. If I'm on my tractor,
my SKS is in the rack behind my head. Good for hogs, varmints (4 or 2 legged), a deer or large duck killing snapping
turtles in my pond. Even a Black bear tho I haven't had the occasion to test that, they do come on my property
now and then. So far, they run like a scalded dog when the realize I'm a human on the tractor. Yeh, SKS is my
go to.

I would go with my Rossi Model 92 with a 16" barrel, chambered for the .45 Colt. Lightweight, small size, and quick to put it into action, it makes for one handy carbine!
