36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
22:36

I had an argument with a friend who said it was un-Christian like to own or buy a gun. I pointed this verse out to him in the New Testament. Now to my thinking, swords were the handguns of its time, what do you guys think?

I'm not talking religion here, I'm just trying to back up my right to own view point from an historical perspective.

I got religion and I don't find it wrong to buy a gun god let it be made and intended for us to have it as well.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Legitimate defense

2263 The legitimate defense of persons and societies is not an exception to the prohibition against the murder of the innocent that constitutes intentional killing. "The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not."65

2264 Love toward oneself remains a fundamental principle of morality. Therefore it is legitimate to insist on respect for one's own right to life. Someone who defends his life is not guilty of murder even if he is forced to deal his aggressor a lethal blow:

If a man in self-defense uses more than necessary violence, it will be unlawful: whereas if he repels force with moderation, his defense will be lawful. . . . Nor is it necessary for salvation that a man omit the act of moderate self-defense to avoid killing the other man, since one is bound to take more care of one's own life than of another's.66

2265 Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for one who is responsible for the lives of others. The defense of the common good requires that an unjust aggressor be rendered unable to cause harm. For this reason, those who legitimately hold authority also have the right to use arms to repel aggressors against the civil community entrusted to their responsibility.

Search the forum, before you start a discussion that's been done to death, and is 99% sure to run afoul of the moderators. Your friend is being goofy and you already know it. We can't help you with that. :)

This topic comes up frequently and the out come is never good.

Here's my answer Romans 14 : 23
But he who doubts is condemened if he eats, because he does not eat from faith : for what ever is not from faith is sin. ( NKJV)

Go back and read the whole chapter. This is one of those matters that's between you and God. Read 14:14 too if you (or your friend) consider it to be sin, it's sin.

Christ let the Romans abuse him, crucify him, and stick him with a spear, what do you think?

Then again, most law abiding US citizens will allow the ATF to do the same. :)

there in lies your answer --------->

Hey, it was just a question. If your not interested, no need to reply, just ignore the question. If the moderators lock the thread, so be it. So much for freedom of speech.

It is un-Christian not to fight evil for the preservation of life. A gun is only a tool that helps us in that fight.

Death is evil, but when someone forces another into a situation where he has to take a life in order to preserve his own, the guilt lies on the attacker, not on the defender. The attacker forced the defender's hand.

Christians should always act to allow the best outcome to happen, or when there is no good outcome, the least evil one. War and violence is a bad thing, but it is not something that should be avoided at all costs. Sometimes, the gun has to be used to combat evil.

The apostles all carried swords during their times for self defense. The gun is the modern-day equivalent. If your friend thinks that self-defense is evil, then he is loony.

I could not believe that I was in a Catholic Church.

That is a mis-quoted saying. Turning the other cheek has to do with pride, not life and death. Our lives are valuable and God wants us to protect them. If you're dead, you can't turn the other cheek. That quote did not have to do with lethal force at all.

I am a Christian with guns and CHP. I am the priest, provider, and PROTECTOR of my family...nuff said!

The book of Nehemiah has a lot to say about the need to be armed to protect against violence. They'd have been a lot better off if they could have conceal carried handguns while rebuilding those walls than having to carry a spear in one hand and their tools in the other. :)

WWJD? What would Jesus do?

Don't know. But...

WWJD? What will Justin do?

Justin gonna lock this thread.

God allowed men to create the idea of guns for me and you.

That's my view of it at least.

From the forum rules:
We have learned from bitter experience that discussions of abortion, religion and sexual orientation often degenerate into less-than-polite arguments or claims that "my God is better than your God". For this reason, we do not discuss such subjects on THR, and any threads dealing primarily with these subjects will be closed or deleted immediately.
And:
So much for freedom of speech.
Scorpian, the Constitution doesn't apply here, we aren't the government. You are a guest in Oleg's house, and his rules apply.

Closed.
