What kind of manufacturer 'promotion' or 'special offer' would it take to make you seriously think about buying a new rifle or shotgun this year? Free ammo, shooting accessories, a guided hunt, a shopping spree, interest free financing, a field test trial period, something nice for the wife... ???

We are the shooters. Brainstorm with me and let me know all your wild and crazy ideas. Think out of the box. Help me out here because I might actually be able to help turn some of these ideas into reality.

Respond to this thread, or PM, or email me direct.

Buy one get one free :D

Probably including "must have" accessories would be good. 5 free magazines with a semi-auto, a hundred rounds of ammo, etc. Think of what you need to get for the gun before heading to the range with it for the first time and include those items.

Free ammo is awesome. As far as swaying me to buy one brand over the other I don't think that would be an easy task.
However, free ammo with purchase would certainly sway me if I was on the fence about buying my new gun or not.

It really won't take any promotion of any kind. I just get what's called, "The Itch" and look out gun shops - here I come!!

Seriously, though, a decent combo promotion like a Savage $50-$100 rebate combined with a sale at Cabelas/Sheel's/Gander Mtn. would make me dig out of our last snowfall and go shopping for a nice appliance with a heavy-barrel in .243 Win (varmint-style).

It's the double whammy combo rebate/sale that seems to get my engine started (as if my engine needs starting).

Interest free would probably get the most participation, whether it could be afforded by the buyer or not.

For me it would be course or hunt.

Promotional stuff never influences me. But testimonials by owners on Fit and finish, accuracy and reliability do. I wish gun companies would put their money where their mouth is and show how good their guns really are, rather than buying off some writer or offering promotionals...a reasonable price helps too.

It would have to be one I can use. Ohio doesn't allow rifles for deer hunting so why own a rifle for it? I can't afford to go out of state. I sure can't afford a rifle just to shoot off rounds hence costing more. I already own rifles and shotguns for varmints. I do hunt 'yotes and g'hogs, but they hardly require a large caliber to take down.
I would buy if the funds were there like before I was married with kids. Back then you simply had to let me see one at the range and try it. That would be one heck of a marketing tool. Not very practical, but it would be effective. It was trying a Howa that got one into my hands, and my AR (any of them), and a Buckmark (both rifle and pistol), and on and on.....

Just bought an old shotgun I didn't need or want, but the fella threw in so much ammo that I couldn't turn down the deal.

For a nice SxS or O/U, the ability to get the gun fitted to me for free would be nice without having to get into the $5-8,000 range or higher.

For a rifle, having the trigger adjustable to my specs in a caliber I want

Free stuff is nice if it is stuff I can use; many times it is cheap promo crap

Rational

It doesen't take much for me! Always seems to be an interest popping up here and there. My local gunshop has an interest free lay-a-way for 1 year which has gotten me bambozzled at least once a year for the last 30 or so!

If you are a gun manufacturer, spend some money to either create or support competitive shooting events that use your products.

Duh.

But every US gun manufacturer seems to focus only on hunting. What if we all replaced a small percentage of the $$$$ spent on golf with a more useful skill like shooting sports?

I'm in the market for a .308 bullpup so any company (namely Keltec) that can produce a working one at a reasonable ($1300) price...

Or a gas piston AR that doesn't cost much more than a standard AR.

Other than that, free magazines or ammo or an instant rebate...

I DO NOT LIKE MAIL IN REBATES- TOO MUCH HASSLE TO COMPLETE, MAIL, AND KEEP TRACK OF...

When I get somewhat motivated to buy another gun, I start the process of evaluating all of the available sources locally and on the internet for the best bottom-line price on that particular gun. Then I factor in convenience and my support of the local gun store. If the disparity is big enough to sway me towards the on line buy, it would be nice if the local store would have a stated policy of matching the lower priced seller's bottom line price after shipping. That would tilt the scale and influence me to buy now.

Getting the most for my money.

Whether that means the absolute lowest price for the gun I want or I get a load of swag items with the purchase; I don't care. Cost is king and service means little to nothing. I'm not going to buy a $700 rifle that comes with a box of ammo, if I can get that very same rifle for $650 anywhere else. But say the lowest price I can find anywhere for a particular shotgun, is offered by two different dealers at the same price, but one of them will toss in a hard case... he gets the sale.

I don't want to pay an extra penny because the shop is local or the employees are congenial.

What intrests me...

Is sponsored shoots at my local range. Once a year they get gun mfgrs.to sponsor a shoot. Try it before you buy it! Recent econo forces have led to the cutomers being required to buy the ammo. If you (gun mfgrs.) want us to test drive, please buy the gas! I don't mean a boxful, three shots is enough to tell me if I fit/like the piece. Price brakes are the second best incentive. Combine mfg and retailer discounts can really stimulate my mood and helps justify the purchase to the "Secretary of the Treasury".:what:

A gun fairey flies in and whispers in my ear when I'm asleep.
Lately I have been obsessed with a repro .45 colt Bisley, nickle, with 7 1/2 barrel.
No excuse or reason for it, and momma didn't raise me to be a cowboy.

Promotions don't work on me, at least not in terms of buying guns. I have a LONG wish list and moderate means, and I'm not going to blow my money on a new gun ahead of all my wish list items just because it came with free ammo or mags.

Unless it was already on my wish list, in which case I might reprioritize to take advantage of added value, if it was stuff I would have been buying anyway (mags, ammo, discounts, etc).

I like the evaluations of new releases from quality manufacturers that show up in the various magazines. I'm waiting for the availability of the new Sig 516. I was ready to buy the new Ruger AR until I saw the new Sig 516. I actually don't own an AR yet. I opted for an M1A instead. I was handling my son's Bushmill:banghead: the last time we were going to the range, but didn't get a chance to fire it. It was raining, deer season had just ended,it was Saturday and the nearest indoor range (only 4 miles from my house) had a 5 hour long wait at the 6 rifle ranges they had.

A special feature on a gun... Right now, if Marlin would issue a 39A with an octagon barrel, I'd buy a couple. The 1897 use to have such a barrel.
