What would your spartan collection be?

.30-06 bolt action rifle for all big game hunting
12 ga pump shotgun with screw in chokes for HD/bird hunting of all kinds
.357 revolver for open carry/ hiking/etc
.38 snub revolver for CCW
.22 rifle for squirrels and the like

That would be my bare minimum to do everything I need to do with guns, it covers HD and hunting. I own an example of each of those.

On top of that for fun guns I have and use somewhat routinely:
AR-15
Garand
lightweight 20 ga pump shotgun for bird hunting days that turn into a death march
.40 pistol for addl HD and when I want variety out hiking
.22 revolver
.22-250 for varmint hunting

I could live happily without any of the second list as the first list will cover their roles quite well. I have more guns that I take out from time to time but mostly are safe queens.

Rem 700 caliber 300 win mag
Rem 700 caliber 308
Win 94 caliber 44 mag
Marlin 1895G caliber 45-70
NEF Protector 12 gauge

Sig GSR caliber 45 auto
Glock 21 caliber 45 auto
Super Black Hawk caliber 44 mag
Glock19 caliber 9MM
Colt Commander caliber 45 auto

I already have these in my collection except for the 300 win mag.

Browning Citori - 12ga with 30" barrels

AR-15 A2 configuration
Ruger 10/22

Thompson Center Contender (chambered for 44mag or 357 Maximum)
S&W K-frame in 38spl, probably a 14 with 6" barrel
CZ 75 SP01 Shadow
2011 in 40 S&W
FN Hi Power Mk III (I like the FN roll mark better than Browning's)
Browning Buckmark

For the last one I'm waffling between a Mossberg 590A1 or nice bolt action in 7mm-08.

Rem 700 300 Win Mag - Elk/moose <600 yds/deer >400 yds
Rem 700 .243 - Deer <400 yds/coyotes
Win 94 30-30 - Deer<200 yds
Anschutz 1813 .22 LR - Target .22
RRA CAR A4 .223 - Coyote/range/SHTF
Rem 870 12 ga - Trap/pheasant gun
Marlin 60 .22 LR - small game gun
Kimber Pro CDP II .45 ACP - Defense/range

Cost is no object:

1. Springfield Armory National Match M1A w/ Leupold 2x-8x: long-range semi fun
2. Springfield Armory SOCOM w/ red-dot: general duty carbine
3. Remington 700 PSS (.308) w/ Leupold 4x-12x: long-range bolt fun
4. Remington 870 (12ga.): sporting clays
5. Mosin-Nagant Finnish Sniper w/ PEM scope: long-range bolt fun/historic value
6. Marlin 918T w/ Burris 2x-7x: short-range semi fun/small game hunting
7. Marlin 60 w/ Burris 2x-7x: short-range bolt fun/small game hunting
8. Browning Hi-Power (9mm): home defense/CCW (me)
9. Ruger SP-101 (9mm): home defense/CCW (wife)
10. Ruger 22/45: short-range semi fun

Cost is an object:

1. Mosin-Nagant 91/30 w/ scope: long-range bolt fun/historic value
2. Enfield w/ scope (7.62 NATO): long-range bolt fun/historic value
3. SKS: general duty carbine
4. AK-47: general duty carbine/symbolic value
5. Remington 870 (12ga.): sporting clays
6. Marlin 918T w/ 2x-7x scope: short-range semi fun/small game hunting
7. Marlin 60 w/ 2x-7x scope: short-range bolt fun/small game hunting
8. Browning Hi-Power clone (9mm): home defense/CCW (me)
9. Ruger SP-101 (9mm): home defense/CCW (wife)
10. pistol (.22lr): short-range semi fun, home defense (wife)

The AK is a little bit of gristle, but that is where the flavor comes from, right? :)

10 isn't all that spartan, but I'll play. This is similar to what I want to do, but with a bigger budget. I'll probably end up with an SP101 and 1894 first, then modify a Mosin and call it good as I stock up on ammo. Already have the CZ 452. :D

1. M&P 340: lightweight .357, can pocket/deep cover carry, can throw larger grips on for other carry options, can fire the big boomers if needed.

2. Marlin 1894 in .357 (did they make it in stainless?) with ghost rings and an Eotech, ideally. Cowboy logistics w/ the revo, large-ish capacity with no logistics train for magazines, quick follow ups for home defense, powerful enough to take elk at short range with the right loads.

3. CZ 452. I love this gun, and we all know why a .22 rifle is a good idea.

4. .22 revolver. S&W kit gun, H&R top break etc depending on finances.

5. Accurate, scoped bolt action in a major caliber. Anything from converted Mosins to Savage 10/110 in .308/30-06. Long range punch, can realistically take anything in North America.

6. Lightweight 1911. I personally like it for carry more than a snub, but it's less versatile and harder to deep conceal.

7. Medium frame Ruger .357. Commonality of calibers, can more easily fire heavy hunting loads, quicker follow-ups, good house gun or woods carry, redundancy if the snub goes down.

8. Marlin Camp Carbine in .45. Cowboy logistics with the 1911 (ammo and mags) great little home defense gun.

9. K-var converted Saiga. Fun to shoot, can hunt deer, best choice in riot situations.

10. Mossberg 590 in 12 ga. Because I probably should have a shotgun, even if I personally find them very "meh." Center safety, and you can put a bayonet on it. :D

After that the only thing I'd really be interested in are semi-auto .22's, and revolver/lever action combos in .44 mag. Sure, other guns would be fun and all, but I'd really rather spend that time and money on ammo and training.

Beretta CX4, 9mm. Can't be a Space Marine without one.
Beretta PX4 F, 9mm, See above.
Beretta 84 FS Cheetah, because it's beautiful and holds lots of ammo.
FN-Herstal FNP-9, 9mm, because it's a sweet-shooting gun with a great trigger.
SIG Mosquito, .22LR, because it's my only SIG.
Smith & Wesson M60, .357 Magnum, 3-inch barrel, because I like it.
Smith & Wesson M637, .38 Special +P, 1 7/8-inch barrel, because everyone needs a hideout gun.
Walther P22, because it's fun to shoot.
Walther PK380, because every P22 needs a big brother.

I need a FN SLP Shotgun, 12 gauge, for those times when only a load of buckshot will do.

And, I might trade one of my 22s to add a Smith & Wesson Model 22, Model of 1917 in .45 ACP, because everyone needs a big, large-caliber wheelgun.

My wife would need her allotment, as well
Walther P22, because she likes it
Browning BDA, because she likes it
Henry H001Y .22. lever action, because she likes it

So she needs seven more. I'll have to talk to her about that...

My son already has a Ruger 10/22 and a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun and I can't very well take those away from him.

My List of 10, combining firearms I own and want to own:

Long Guns-

1. Remington 870 Marine with 18.5" and 26" barrels (HD, SHTF, wilderness)
2. Semi-auto 12 gauge with 3" chamber and 28" barrel (trap, bird hunting)
3. Colt 6920 AR-15 with 16" and 24" uppers, all kinds of rails, scopes, lights, accessories, etc. (HD, SHTF, range, varmint and small-medium game)
4. .30-06 bolt action (medium-large game)
5. .30-30 lever action (medium game, nostalgia, wilderness)

Handguns-

1. Beretta 92FS (beauty, range, HD)
2. Government 1911 in .45ACP (nostalgia, beauty, range, HD, CCW)
3. Ruger GP100 4" stainless .357 (HD, range, wilderness)
4. S&W 642 (CCW)
5. Ruger Single Six 4-5/8" .22LR/.22WMR (range, nostalgia, wilderness, small game)

Heck, I've got more than ten rimfires. How are we ever supposed to get down to 10 guns total?

More improtantly, why on earth would one want to do that?

Walther P22 ---- Cool looking and great for plinking.
Sig P238 ---- Great pocket gun on the 1911 platform.
Beretta 92FS ---- Classic, well built, and reliable.
HK P30 .40S&W (coming in 2010) ---- Great gun, great caliber, great grip, great manufacturer.
Springfield Loaded Micro-Compact 1911 .45ACP ---- Reliable, accurate, concealable and safe to carry with a hot chamber.
Desert Eagle .50AE ---- It's a Desert Eagle.
Remington Marine Magnum ---- Great for non-stationary cadavers.*
Remington 700 VTR .308 ---- Light, tough action, and will kill damned near anything in the country.
HK MR556 ---- Resistant to harsh environments, and built on a proven platform.
AK-47 ---- Only goes *click* when it's empty.

*Great for killing non-stationary cadavers, not great for use by non-stationary cadavers.

Hmm, this changes some over time, but not much.

1903 Springfield sporter

Browning 1886 carbine

Winchester 94 pre-64 carbine

Pre-war Winchester 1894 carbine

Winchester 71, 348 cal

Marlin 39 M

Smith 29 4"

Smith K-22

Smith 19

Ruger SA 45 Colt.

That ought to work.

Would like to have a Colt SAA again, but havent been able to afford one in a long while.

Ruger Mark III 22/45 great to play with, accurate, cheap ammo, can take out very small game like squirrels, in my wifes hands an okay home defense weapon. I know most wouldn't think of a .22lr pistol as h/d but it's not as loud as most pistols and my wife has been shooting a Ruger Mark series since she was a kid and is very comfortable and accurate with one. (plus the first gun we ever bought together)

A GP100 4" it's overbuilt if you need the Ruger Only loads but can fire weak loaded 38's for practice/fun

A Mosin It's cheap, it fires a powerful enough round to take down just about any game in North America, it will go bang when you pull the trigger

a 12 ga pump. Versatile from hunting to trap. And nothing is more intimidating than the sound of that pump to an intruder.

A .22 Rifle. Everyone needs one, great for cheap plinking, training or practice.

SKS/AK I know they aren't they same platform, but the fulfull the same role. A decent gun with a decent rate of fire. Mainly they are semi-autos that can be thrown in the mud, kicked, stomped, and set on fire, and they will still do what they were made to do.

Only 10! That's a tough one!

1911
Sig P229
M1 Carbine
M1 Garand
Bolt action .308 (Tikka T3 Varmint)
12g Pump (Mossberg 500)
.22 bolt rifle (Anschutz)
.22 Handgun (Ruger Mk3)
AK-47 (Arsenal SLR-95
AR-15

Looks like all I need to buy at this point is a Mossberg 500 and Ruger Mk3.

I just did it...that is "get my collection(and ammo) down to a minmum for what I need"
I'm sure need is different for each of us, for me this is what I "spartanized" too:

1. shotgun: Bennelli Nova 18.5" 12g
2. full size pistol: CZ 40B .40S&W
3. concealed carry pistol: Kahr PM40 .40S&W
-reasonable amount of ammo, mags with carry pouches and a shell sling

that's it
