Off topic? Yeah, a little. Cool? WAY!Not sure this counts, as it was over the woodstove, not a fireplace. Moose hunting on a river in a remote area, my buddy and I found a old trappers cabin [I mean old , built of on site wood, no plywood or 2x4s] The door was bear proofed but open to any human so we peeked inside. Guys it was like stepping into 1925. WW1 army cot in the corner, table set with old enameled dish ware, shelves stocked with dry goods. And heres the relevance to this thread. Hanging upside down over the stove by its sling was a as new 1903 Springfield. The bolt was open, so I could see it was stuffed with 220 gr RN's. I did not touch it as that is taboo.
I later learned the cabin was built by a old time Alaskan [86 years old] who still hiked the 30 miles up there every fall and trapped all winter.
I know this post is jumping off topic, but that using 1903 hanging over the wood stove looked cool.
Um... Or a MAUSER!!!It would have to be an 1873 trapdoor for me. Not one of the little short ones either. Has to be full length, big, impressive.
That or a flintlock. Or a Hawken.
I'd put a glass full of irony over my fireplace, right next to the Mosin that shot my grandpa in his Romanian chest in WWII. Its likely that a Nazi comrade helped save his life.I sure wouldn't put a foreign military rifle above my mantle. I'm an American.

To all you you who seem to relish your American pride, good for you. This first-generation American citizen and US military veteran helped give you that right.
We're all foreigners. A Mosin or Arisaka has as much right in the place of "honor" over my fireplace as any American flintlock. If you wanna be politically correct, put a recurve up there and show some respect to those who we murdered to take this land for ourselves.
How about a nice Oil Painting of a the Civil War Battle .. Chances are it won't get stolen or give away your gun interests to strangers, and it's a lot more interesting to look at if you get a good one. Like a or 6-8 ft. long by 4 or 5 ft. wide painting. It will also add some color to the room.
