^^^^+1 on flintlock.
Mosins lack romance. They were made for shooting and in a pinch, paddling your canoe!

My grandfather kept a Walker Colt (reproduction) and an old Hawken rifle above the fireplace. Took em down, and shot them once a week. Cleaned them, reloaded them, and threw them back up.

I keep an old SXS scattergun with 30" tubes and exposed hammers above mine. Like my grandpa, I shoot it once a week, clean it, and reload it.

hi-point carbine! :) But I second rondog. nothing valuable or that could be loaded and used to shoot a guest child or something. I have an old rusted shut sxs shotgun in the corner as decoration. my wife......tolerates it.

Lee Enfield No1 Mk3. I keep a trigger lock on it and an empty mag. I'm not opposed to keeping some full stripper clips hidden somewhere, but some of my kids have a violent past and the others are little, so I make sure my SD gun is only available to my wife and I.

A Mosin-Nagant? Seriously!?

Mine's a Martini-Henry .577/450 with an NCO's sword bayonet and a bright white sling...

PS: it locks into its gun "hooks" as at the wrist, where it needs a spanner key to remove, and cannot be slid back and forth so both front and back points hold it secured to the wall.

A handmade Pennsylvania flintlock! Hands down that is what I'd put.

And if any power horn is with it, please don't put any powder in it! At least not near a fireplace.

Nagant is a legit idea especially if its going to be 99% decorative, why pay more, I've seen some that look nice and shiny despite being almost 70yrs old, though their accuracy can leave a bit to be desired. I have to second the flintlock if you aren't on a budget.

Mines an old Huskvarna(sp). Double bbl. I got it a few years ago for that very purpose. Didn't pay much. I suppose I could fix it, but don't want to.

I have been searching high and low for a wall hanger or two. I have a pioneer/non-cowboy western theme we are working on. Hammered double barrel or any flint/cap rifle. Want rusty, broken/cracked stocks, non-firing. Stage props would work too. These seem to be very tough to find.

Nagant is a legit idea
Only if your fireplace is in your home in the stepps of Russia.

Those of us Americans old enough to remember Korea, the cold war, or Vietnam would put a Nagant in the back of the closet behind the seldom used clothes.

So it didn't bring back old memories of American friends and relatives who died fighting against them.

That, or an AK-47 would be the last rifles in the world I would give a place of honor over the fireplace in my house!!

There were Americans fighting with the Finns in the winter war against the ruskies...I bet some of them used Nagants. US Army also had some M1916 nagants

This is true.

But it wasn't the one you bought for 89.95 at the Sportsman's Warehouse I betcha.

Tlting/rolling/falling block, engraved SXS, flint/wheel/matchlock

Or a pair of matched pistols and sabres :D

The number one choice for me would be a flintlock rifle followed by a Hawken style rifle perhaps. For the person who mentioned a trapdoor springfield I also agree it would make a fine choice.
