All the gun shops in Coos, Douglas, and Lane counties are pretty much crap. I bought a gun from Keith's Sporting Goods (they're based in Gresham IIRC) at the Portland gun show, and they had a better selection and prices than any other shop I've seen yet.

Is there any other shops that are bigger/better than Keith's?

I've got about $1500 to spend right now, and will have another $1000-$1500 in the next month or so that I will most likely spend on guns. Portland is a long way to drive for me, but I'd rather spend the time and money on gas than to have to hassle with buying online or paying extra to local shops. That's why I want to know where to go to find what I want in stock.

The main things on my shopping list right now is big bore rifles, S&W revolvers, and assault guns. I can count the number of rifles bigger than .338 I've seen at local gunshops on one hand, and most of the shops don't carry more than 5-10 new S&W revolvers.

thanks

Check out the Security Store in Hillsboro. They are nice people when you come to the store, although you may get the wrong impression if you call them on the phone. At first I thought the guy was not too friendly when I called on the phone and he told me he had no time to talk and acted a bit stressed out. I came to the store and they were very helpful and informative. They got an awesome selection of ARs, AKs and every other type of tactical gun you can think. Handgun selection is a bit limited compared to Keith,s but still is reasonable. They sell all kinds of interesting stuff there, including security equipment and pepper spray/mace products.

BTW.. A lot of their prices for some guns are bit overpriced, but I did feel like these guys could be haggled on some of their guns. Tell them you want to be a good and repeated customer but you like them to match the prices you seen on gunbroker. I think if you were assertive and friendly about finding a good deal, they may be willing to give you a deal.

Have you tried the Sportsman's in Salem? Usually lots and lots of rifles at SW,however with the run on guns these days NObody has much in the way of handguns.
The last time I was at Marine Fisherman's supply in oreon city they had a nice selection of both, but theere again,it's the wrong time to see a lot of handguns at any store methinks.

There are a ton of gunshops in the Portland area.
If you are out west of town check:
The Powder Horn Gunshop, Forest Grove.
H&K Gunshop, one block from the Powder Horn.
Al's Hardware in Verboort about five miles from Forest Grove.

These three are small, friendly, outfits with interesting inventories.

You will find that Keiths is VERY different in their shop than at the gun show. I actually like dealing with them at the show but in the shop its the WORST customer service I have ever gotten. I can honestly say that 2x now I have bought guns from them and wish I had not, the guns were fine but I was treated like crap. Unfortunately they do generally have the selection and the price.

However the best place for me, is Gun Broker. They have 3 locations but I use the one in Tigard since its the closest to me. They have always been great. I just bought my last pistol there and think that I may be sticking to my guns and only buying from them from now on.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm probably going to P-town early next week if I don't find something snazzy at the Albany gun show (IF I go to the Albany gun show), and I will check out some of these other shops, assuming I have the time.

Hey kirkcdl, thanks for that link. I went ahead and joined that forum too.

I'm always surprised when people ask about good gun shops in Portland and no one mentions Northwest Armory. They've been around a long time and deal in everything from sporting shotguns to ARs, used S&W revolvers to new HKs. They have a good selection, nice staff, they are never too crowded (it's a big showroom), and they have some of the best prices in town. Keith's has nasty customer service, but they probably sell the most at the gun show because their table is huge. NW Armory doesn't have a table at the gun show. Neither does Gun Broker, but they've got some good shops, not a huge selection, but are ALWAYS packed with customers. Sportsmans Warehouse has a big selection and decent prices, but nothing "special" like niche or used guns. Fishermans Marine Supply has good prices but a very small selection of handguns. For long guns (besides ARs and AKs) you cannot beat Bi-Mart. They'll always have a Ruger 10/22 or a Remington 870 on sale for a ridiculous price. Joes Sports (formerly G.I. Joes) has a much bigger selection of long guns than Bi-Mart, and decent prices, but they were bought out by a Californian Corporation, so I take my money to the locally-owned Bi-Mart for long guns. Add these to the other suggestions already mentioned, and you've got a good place to start.

I like Northwest Armory in Milwaukie. There's a new shop called the Gun Zone: http://www.gun-zone.com/ and just down the street from them is the Gun Broker. I've never been to the new shop but both Northwest Armory and Gun Broker have good people to deal with.

So you don't care much for Hole-In-The-Wall or Tidewater?:D

Baron's den is kind of neat, like a small museum with all the old stuff they have on display. There's a pretty good shop in Philomath (Philomath Gun Shop- only been there once). SM in Eugene isn't bad, but they really have a funny attitude there. I know a lot of guys who just don't go there anymore because of their attitudes.

If you are looking for someting specfic let me know I live in sellwood and usuly make the rounds once a week. I like kieths for price and selection but its hit and miss on customer service but I usuly know exactly what i am after when I walk in the door so i dont need much help. NW armory had a couple nice ar's last week one SnW mnp 15 that was nice and a stag that looked good to both were between 1k and 1200. so let me know and i will keep an eye out for you.

I've been in a lot of them. Every one of them has its own feel, its own aura, its own stockpile of odds and ends, characters, parts and supplies, wheelers and dealers. For my money, the best of the bunch -- the one place I go back to time and again -- is MLC Exotic Class III in Salem. MLC is Mick L. Cook, a former LEO and all-around good guy. He has a nice selection, changing daily, of both pistols and long guns, new and used; and if you want it and he doesn't have it in the shop, he'll do his darndest to find it for you.

Best of all, he's an honest man who looks out for his steady customers. How can you beat that? It's the kind of thing you seldom ever get in a box store.

Philomath Gun Shop

I have yet to find any gun shop in Oregon that can beat Wes at Philomath Gun Shop, Philomath, Oregon.

Go to their website and they have all their guns (available in store or can order) listed AND to price.

I thought this one had a lot to offer. Somewhere between Bend and Crater Lake. I didn't get a chance to go in. Coming from NC, this sign was a bit of a shocker.

I live in Medford and would like to reccomend good guys guns. The guys that work there are nice, open minded, and very knowledgable. They can be a bit curmudgeony at times but thats o.k. Their ammo is a bit steep but they have a great selection of pistols and the store has a good feel. That is if you aren't there on yocal yayhoo day. Some of their customers make my skin crawl.

Good Guys? I hope that their present staff is more knowledgeable than the one I encountered. He kept insisting that the Model 97 Win I was holding was actually a Mod 12, even though the action was open. His reason for believing that it was a model 12......it had '12' stamped on the barrel. :banghead:

SM Guns in Eugene is pretty good. The Baron's Den in Eugene is also a decent gun shop. They have some pistols you can try if you want at their indoor range.

Haven't had a good experience, in terms of customer service, at either of the above Eugene shops. In Eugene proper, Mazama seems to have the best line on customer service; although their mall location brings in some undesirables from time to time.

Most of the people who work at SM and Barons Den are kind of a**holes, they are knowledgeable though and their selection is good. I have never gone back to Mazamas after seeing a $900 Mini-14 for sale there earlier this year.

D Boone's photo of Ken's Sporting Goods was taken in Crescent OR, on US-97 a bit south of Bend. Large selection in a small space, knowledgeable crew, prices middling to high, it is a regular stop for me when I drive that way but not at all worth a trip from Coos Bay. On my last visit, they had a stainless Ruger Redhawk .357 magnum that very nearly came home with me.

The BEST gun shop in Coos Bay was the War Surplus Store across from the Cheverolet dealer.

But that was years ago. Like about 45 years ago...Cheverolet still there? How about the Egyptian...Aah...Fond memories.

Best little gun shop

Baron's Den in Eugene is excellent in their selection of handguns and rifles both new and used , also they have an indoor range for handgun calibers and an extensive rental board of guns to try out. They can be standoffish to strangers , but it is usually the attitude of the customer that determines their responses .
I've been to shops all over Oregon , and they are the place I keep coming back to.
