What's the general consensur here regarding tasers for self defense?

True. Didn't slow down Batman, though, did it?

Umm, I looked up J-frame revolvers. They don't look like they have much stopping power with their short barrels, low muzzle velocity, and low caliber. Not sure if they meet minimum FBI standards as testing on The Box of Truth. Might be a worse weapon than a taser...

Don't get me wrong fellas, if this comparison were between a 12 gauge or an AR-15 with a full mag and a taser, the long gun wins every time. But handguns are crap. They really are. Every test I've ever seen on a The Box of Truth, the handgun sucks. Bad. One time I went to the range and rented a 9mm Beretta. That gun was terrible, could barely even hit the silloutte target at 20 feet away. By comparison, I've nailed the 300m target again and again with the basic sights on an M16.

That link demonstrates excellent performance from J-frame revolvers in .38spcl, nevermind a .357 Magnum.

btw,

It's the indian, not the arrow.

For something that "sucks" there certainly seems to be quite a few people planted in the ground due to it.

Well, yeah. A pistol can do lethal damage...that will result in the death of the person shot in a few hours or minutes...

Rather than, say, paralyzing them in 200 milliseconds or so...

Knock it off or you're going to get this one closed... the simple truth is, NOTHING anyone can carry concealed at this point is going to be 100% at stopping every situation instantly. We all make the best choices we can within quite a number of varying constraints.

Please stick to the question at hand re. Tasers...

If I shoot someone in self defense in Florida, I doubt I will pay a dime. It's nice to live in a state like this.
As far as wanting to incapacitate someone for 30 seconds, I am not interested in doing that. I will not draw my firearm unless I intend to use it and there must be a very compelling reason for me to holster it before firing it. Any reason why I would need a taser is a reason for me to need a firearm. I have had to exercise my rights before so I am 100% confident and comfortable with my statements here.
Habeed, you are very misinformed and I hope and pray you never get in a serious situation needing action. And please stop speaking in absolutes and giving advice on things and in areas which you have no obvious experience. You may get someone hurt if they take your advice. Thanks.

My thoughts on civilians carrying tasers as a less-than-lethal alternative to a firearm is real simple: Pepper spray is smaller, lighter, cheaper, more convenient, can be used multiple times (ie.: multiple attackers), and is legal in more places than tasers.

Before you tell me that a taser isn't a deadly weapon, refer to your own rough numbers:"

Tasers have been ruled in court and are generally considered "Less than Lethal" therefore not a deadly weapon.

My J frame is a .357Magnum with 135gr Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo. Would you stand in front of it and let me fire one off.

Tasers are deadly.

They should be employed for personal defense only when deadly force is necessary. When deadly force is necessary, I will employ a firearm. They are more accurate, more powerful, more reliable, offer multiple shots, and can be used for blunt force in a last ditch situation.

I don't want to kill anyone, but some people need killin' and they make that decision for you.

Tasers are a less lethal tool; not less than lethal

I noticed in the news article the cause of death hadn't been determined yet. One punch can kill, therfore anyone who punches another should be charged with AWDW?
