Romanaian Par-3. AK tough, .223, and no gas system to foul. Big 5 on Lancaster has them for 259.

here's one on gb for about a bill more than its worth.

Suggest against it. Why muck up Kalashnikov's baby with this abomination of a pump action modification?

Didn't see it listed, the Remington 742 in 7.62X63 (30-06).

Ballistics, power and accuaracy put the SKS to shame. Priced under $350 at pawn shops and on line everywhere. Ammo from CMP delivered to your door is priced about the same as the 7.62X39 delivered to your door. Ammo is more widely available than 7.62X39 with dozens of more loading options. Easy to mount a scope. Made in America. Great hunting rifle for any type game that your 10/22 can't get. As powerful as a Mosin except in semi-auto and without the recoil. Every home should have one.

Disadvantages: Harder to repel hordes of Zombies with a 5 or 10 round magazines. Dosen't make you look as "tacticool" at your trial. Won't draw any interest at the range.(are these disadvantages? not sure...)

The Remington 742/7400 (semi) and 762/7600 series are interesting choices to look at, too.

Saiga or SKS.

Either way will serve you well. Having had first hand experience with both rifles I know that they are made well and will function well. Either weapon would be deadly in skilled hands.

I like the SKS slightly better I think, but the Saiga has it's advantages too.

Well, to me, a SHTF rifle needs to be accurate. It may need to get meat, and if only squirrels and rabbits and birds are available, you'll starve if you have an SKS.

I'd stick with your 10/22, provided it is reliable. You can carry a LOT of 22LR ammo on your person. It is deadly enough on game, because if you find large game, you won't mind tracking it if you can't make the head shot.

Humans you'll encountered won't be armored, and an accurate semi-auto 22 will make quick work of them.

If you think I'm nuts for that choice, go with the Marlin lever action out of your choices. It is more powerful, accurate, and will take all sizes of game and enemies. It is also handy & light. I'd probably go with 44 Magnum instead of 30-30 though.

Another SKS vote here. I just picked up a used Norinco from a coworker, who barely fired it (and put it in a Ramline synthetic stock). So far I've fired about 70 rounds through it, and come to the conclusion it's plenty accurate for anything I can think of to do with it. As a bonus, 7.62x39 ammo is almost as cheap as 9mm ammo around here, running about $220/1000 from my local guy (no shipping and no taxes! ;) ).

If you're worried about feeding yourself with your gun in the event of TEOTAWKI/SHTF, might I humbly recommend an accurate, reliable .22 pistol to go with your centerfire rifle. Most smaller critters can be approached to a range where you can pot them with the .22LR pistol (think inside 25 yards). As a bonus, the .22 pistol is small and light enough you aren't likely to be without it.

Actually, for the price of a base AR-15 (around $800 locally), you could get an SKS ($200-300), a used Ruger Mk-II (~$200) and a bunch of ammo. Or you could get a centerfire handgun like a used Ruger P-series pistol ($250-350, depending) to round things out and likely be just as well off equipment-wise.
