Whats your caliber footprint?

Far more than I'd like to have.

I try and tell myself that it is a good thing. If we go through another ammo shortage like we did a few years ago, I just have more options for shooting if I do find a box of something.

The big problem is that I feel obligated to a certain ammout of ammo in stock at home for each caliber so that if I want to go to the range, I've got some and don't need to rush off to the store to buy some. I find it is a bit annoying the way calibers spiraled.

If I had to do it over again, I could get down to the few below and then those that are on the fence.

Must haves:
45 ACP
30-30 (my lever action would be the first gun I'd save if there was a fire and the last I'd ever get rid of)
308 (versatile)
12 gauge

On the fence that I could go either way
22 LR - at this point in my life time is more precious than anything and when I can get to the range (not as often as in the past) I basically can afford to shoot any of the above must haves

9 mm - saves money but free time at the range more precioius

30-06 - so close to the 308 that I could easily do without. Actually modern 308 cartridges have the same oomph as did pre WWII 30-06s.

45-70 fun but not necessary unless I want to hunt dangerous game (not in the plans for the next 20 years ... family obligations .... dangerous game will wait till family is grown up)

40 cal - i would only get this if I ever can get a CCW in the liberal parts of CA where I'd live so I'd have a potential option for a small CCW pistol such as G27. I still like 45 ACP

If we're talking about a rifle I have to go with the 7mm rem. mag. But a close second is the .270 win. for it's ability to effectively and confidently handle North American big game despite the contraversy. Many have argued that the .270 win. doesn't have what it takes to handle elk and bear. That is simply nothing more tha lack of confidence in the round. What's more is the 270 win. has taken both of those using one bullet weight, the 130 grain in either a Speer 130 gr. B.T. Hot Core or the Grand Slam. Additionally it should be observed that the 7mm rem. mag. is only .007" larger and though it produces higher velocity it too has taken N.A. big game using the 130 gr. Hot Core as an only bullet choice.

I'm pretty young, and getting started at this, so it's pretty basic right now. Several have more than one gun in that caliber.

Lots of you guys have impressive private ammo/gun museums. At least the guns are documented in a will/trust?

Dunkelheit:
Ein Freund aus Essen (who lives here) told me that in Germany, even the ammo must be stored at a shooting range, and an exact written record of the amount must be kept?

He also described the classes which are required to become a shooter. I learned many years ago about the required Fahrschule for a driver's license, but would never have dreamed that a class is required just to shoot a gun.
