I saw a thread on here about how some prefer to shoot from the bench and got to wondering whats your favorite position to shoot from?

Mine in order of preference

1:prone- I just shoot best this way and Im really comfortable behind the rifle like this

2:Kneeling Supported/Standing Supported- My next most comfortable spots

3:Bench- I have to say I can never get comfortable and I always feel awkward sitting at a bench with a rest or sandbags it always seems like the gun sits too low or too far away from my face to get it right I always fight the gun and cant get "settled"

4:Standing Unsupported- My least favorite for obvious reasons but I still get my practice in

so what say you?

Low kneeling. When I add a good sling I'm actually better in that stance than I am from the bench with some rifles. You can really settle into that stance, though after awhile the back leg tends to fall asleep.

Toughest for me is the sitting, because I still have too much gut to deal with.

I've also had troubles getting stable in a crouch.

Bench...simply because I generally shoot for small groups. But this thread reminds me I need to branch out and shoot in different positions every now and then...

Unsupported standing is how I hunt, and consequently, how I shoot for practice---after zeroing with sandbags, sitting, that is.

Prone or Kneeling supported. both are most comfortable for me and I'm more accurate in these positions.

Prone - I find prone to be very comfortable to shoot from. I joke when I'm at matches for my scorer to kick me if I stop shooting, just to wake me up.

Offhand - I actually enjoy shooting offhand. Part of it is psychological; it wigs everybody else out to do, so I approach it with a positive attitude.

Sitting - This is very useful in many occasions, and the many variations of sitting allow me to use it more frequently than I do prone at the range.

Kneeling - Still getting a feel for this one.

Bench - If I'm doing load work over a chronograph, this is the only way to get high enough comfortably while still giving me enough stability for reliable group information. But it is the last place I want to shoot anything with significant recoil, that's for sure.

Prone with a sling. I recently got the privilege of shooting olympic grade air rifles every week at school and I love shooting for that 1mm bullseye from the prone...unfortunately I need more practice b/c I don't hit it enough .

I like them all but tied for first place is prone and sitting. For most people, prone is the easiest, and that holds true for me. I like sitting because it still gives you a lot of support and also gives you the ability to hit a wider variety of targets than prone. I am barely passable at standing but I do put effort into it since it is my weakest position.

I prefer off-hand, or leaning up against something like a tree of the side of a vehicle if I need added support for a longer shot. I feel that training yourself to rely on shooting off-hand is the best habbit to get into, because weather your hunting or in a self defense scenario it is better to be mobile than static.

I shoot for practicality. I only shoot unsupported standing on pistol, and I shoot whatever I'm feeling on any given day with rifle. Unless I'm out at the range qualifying. Then I shoot the course of fire. ;)

The one that best enables me to get good hits on the target in the given situation and circumstances.

Not sure I could describe any particular one as my "favorite" but I tend to use the reverse kneeling position quite a bit.

When designing a stage, I'm kind of fond of rollover prone just for the epic amounts of complaining it generates.

It really depends upon the rifle and what I am trying to accomplish, but in general I prefer the prone position.

One notable exception is my thumpers...standing and crouching (with shooting sticks) becomes far more appealing. ;)

justin and gus enlighten me whats roll over prone? is this on your side? ive always heard that being called urban prone but hey im still new at all this lol

Sitting on my hunting bucket/chair, rifle on either the rail or sticks, looking at potential supper through the scope. A couple of my stands have old office typists/secretary chairs with arms. I would get a good high back office chair if they were not so expensive. Makes for a pleasant hunting and reading day. My stands are 6x6 and a good place to lay down for a nap or discuss current events with my wife.
