Whats YOUR favorite shooting position?

justin and gus enlighten me whats roll over prone? is this on your side? ive always heard that being called urban prone but hey im still new at all this lol
I'm no expert by any means, but roll-over is simply where you cant your body about 30 degrees whilst in the prone position, effectively laying on one arm (generally your strong arm) with your cheek resting on the same. Also, your leg is crossed over your strong leg to help balance/stabilize the position.

Now wait for someone that actually knows what they are talking about to better explain it...

:)

Fav.

Prone, standing, sitting.
Rarely shoot from the bench.

Pete

I am the most stable in prone with a sling (hell, I'm probably more stable in this position than I would be off a bench or bipod, just because I practice it so much more).

But if you go by which positions I actually use the most in the field, I'd say my favorites are kneeling, and offhand (preferably supported), using a sling any time I have time to get into it (which is most of the time, since I have some pretty fast sling setups on my go-to rifles).

If I have more time or it is a really long shot/really small target I will go prone, but a lot of times tall grass or other things get in the way, so cross legged seated is a good substitute, and gives me almost as much stability.

OK I know I just gave pretty much every basic field position, but hey, you can't answer the question of what your favorite position is without saying what situation it is your favorite for!

Though not a full rollover prone that is me shooting though a low port in a minor rollover prone. I have shot through ports so small and low down that the ejection port was in the dirt, and I was near standing on my head.

I practice mostly with the kneeling position after a rifle is sighted at the bench. When hunting I use the kneeling position a lot or I will shoot off a bipod.

Gus Ill have to try that next time im at the range
Im just starting to get involved with my local IDPA and they are soon adding 3 gun to the mix (actually missed the first match :( )

most of the guys there are up in years and dont even want to do a kneeling shot wait till I introduce this lol

Sitting on jacket or pad with elbows on (slightly in front of) knees and relaxing as I put them down range :)

Or, next to tree with fore arm gloved against the tree/limb and sights on critter out in the grass :)

Well, bench shooting is boring, unless I am working on a load or sighting. I seem to have aged out of all the other positions, expect for standing on my hind legs, so off-hand it is. I reckon I should make myself a set of shooting sticks, so I can actually hit something.

Sitting on the top of the steep river bank, in a partial squat.

At the range in this position, it was very easy to be in front of the bench with a "Jungle Carbine", and get a tight, better group from 50 yards than is usually done on the bench in the most artificial setting for a gun.

If the chance to hunt feral pigs ever becomes reality on whoever's land (near west TN etc), either a "Jungle Carbine" or Spanish FR8 will be the rifle.
I would like to shoot on my first hunt from a sitting position, but don't know anybody with farmland, except down in Auburn, AL.

Standing with a tree to rest my off hand on. I find this position very steady and it is extreemly useful for hunting in the woods.

Baring this, sitting with shooting sticks (even more steady but not as fast to get into) or prone (terrain most often negates this position).

Bench is great, but I don't think it qualifies as a shooting position.

Laying in bed, falling off to sleep thinking about visiting the club range to go shooting the next morning and following day off if I don't have to work the weekend. ;)
