I have a Glock and I like it fine, but I'm also about to get a P99 in trade and wonder if that is a better quality gun.

I'm talking about a self defense gun, too. Concealed/non-concealed carry.

For "Combat" true actual combat not EDC or SD but true shoot'em up killing I would take a 1st gen Glock 17 and as many +2 mags as I could get.

For EDC of SD I would get a G19 and a few full cap mags.

But if I were truly going to Combat I would take a GI issue 1911A1 and a boatload of GI 7 rounders

Having shot just about everything on your list, I wouldn't feel bad about using any of them. My pick, the Glock followed by the USP because it can be carried C&L.

My combat plastic of choice is a Glock, but I've owned and liked the other kinds as well. If the Glock didn't exist, I'd probably go to a Walther P99 or a SIGpro.

Glock all the way, not even a second thought about any of the others.

The gun that I would like for myself among all the polymer guns out there - would be German made Walther P99 in 9mm.

However, the choice for a combat handgun (ah, that term again) would be H&K Mk23.

I would have to pick my Ruger KP97D to take into battle. It has not had a failure of any kind in the 4000+ rounds I have put through it. It handles +p loads with ease and will eat anything I feed it.

After I shot my Walther P99 and my department issue Glock 17 this past week, I will like to say that I will stay with the Glock 17 3rd gen hands down. It feels more comfortable in my hand and the trigger pull is DAO, can beat that at almost 5.5 pounds every shoot.

One thing you must do first with either one of these pistol, change their plastic sights with night sight (meprolight).

Yes I agree, the Glock is a no brainer.:D

Jokes aside, the P-99 is the best IMHO. Excellent trigger (awesome reset), good safety, 16+1 rounds, excellent ergonomics (and variable grip), great accuracy, it comes with multiple sites for perfect zero, etc. The best of the plastic guns.

I recently aquired a P99. It is a great gun but I would be indifferent between it and a G19 as far as polymer guns go. That's probably because I've spent a lot of trigger time on the G19. Maybe with some more time I'll prefer the P99. The 16+1 capacity is indeed sweet.

None. Just unloaded a Glock 17 a while back that I couldn't shoot well. Now have over 1200 rounds through a Ruger P97 that is otherwise a good piece (that I do shoot well) but pops the occasional round out the top.

Whereas my long-in-the-tooth Security Six always goes "six for sure" with .357/125s.

If it isn't stone reliable, on, and pretty quick--why use it?

BTW, I traded the Glock and its high caps straight across for two like-new Security sixes; one blued and one stainless. Heckuva deal.

I can't honestly compare becuase I haven't tried several poly guns that I'd like to including the Walther, Steyr, SIGpro, XD, Kahr, and others.
I have shot Glocks and USPs and of the two I'd prefer a Glock's thinner profile for CCW and the H&Ks .45's ability to eat .45 Super for super as a duty gun.

I'm fond of the feel and sights of the Steyr but haven't shot one. If the quality and design is even half as good as the rifles they're keepers.

The XD has a better trigger than the Glock and other than that I have no experiance with them.

Walther, really like the features. Never shot one.

SIGpro, I think I might have picked one up once . . . didn't really leave an impression.

Kahr, I've seen them in the cabinet.

So, my opinion is pretty worthless, but you asked for it ;)

I think my Glock 17L would do nicely. It combines the ruggedness and reliabilty of the general design (with the right ammo) with the pointability of the longer barrel/slide (no need to conceal the large gun), the controlability and better penetration of the 9mm (vs .45, enhanced by the longer barrel) and the availabilty of accessories like 19 to 33 round magazines, shoulder stocks, tactical lights.
