The last couple of days have been real scorchers with temperatures reaching 109 to 111 degrees. I have been trying to match ammos that my newly purchased Rock River Arms likes but with this temperatures the barrel never really cools off. I was wondering if anyone here on HighRoad ever postpone shooting because conditions besides being unbearable are just to darn hot to really shoot good groups.

I was hunkered down in a gully filled with talcum like dust in over 100 degree heat shooting Prairie Dogs this weekend. Sweat and super fine dust don't mix, or rather they do, very well. I experienced no failures or malfunctions and my accuracy with my AR was right on.

I have shot the rifle when temps were 105 degrees but yesterdays temp was just a little to hot for me...111 degrees.

Any time it is so hot you are not having fun shooting, or it's so hot it is dangerous to be outside for any amount of time.

Almost all my shooting has come to a stop on the (home) rifle range, although I might try out a 7.62x39 hand-load in my CZ527 tomorrow morning.

I still shoot most days. I have a range in my back yard, so several times a day I grab several magazines or a hand-full of loose rounds and shoot for a few minutes. Then it's back inside the air conditioned shop.:)

About a month ago I did get heat sroke and spent Sunday in the hospital. It sneaks up on you and isn't much fun. If you do have to be out in the heat drink a LOT of water.

Duty or training, there's no such thing.
For fun shooting, when it's too hot to have fun.

The same holds for "too cold" or "too wet".

Re: Indoor range time:
The indoor range I go to doesn't have AC!. At least the sun isn't beating down. The real reason to go is location on a weeknight makes shooting possible.

I slacked off shooting in early July. Heat was one factor but not the only one. I had other things to do. But heat, rain & mosquitos at night didn't help. I shoot air rifle at night sometimes which helps with the heat. Sun & humidity can wear on you.

I shot on Sunday afternoon (21st) and went through a lot of liquids and was like an ant dodging the sun.

We are your brothers in Nevada and Arizona, and we wouldn't get to shoot at all if we were whimpy weanies. It's cooler from first week of October to the end of April. But May 15 through Sept 15 always >100 days, regularly >110, occasionally 116. Drink plenty of water, wear a hat, and keep the gun lubricated.

I'll tell you when I get back from Vegas :D So far I haven't met a day too hot to shoot (max of ~105 in Tallahassee since I've been here)

It's really too hot here during the summer for me to have fun shooting at the outdoor range I go to. I don't/won't go to indoor ranges for a variety of reasons.

Its forecasted to be 116 here tomorrow... it was 118 today... it hit 120 a few days ago.

I'm ready for the "cooling trend" so I can head back out into the free range. ;)

I went out last month once.. it was 105 that day. I haven't gone back since then, it's just too damn hot.

The place I shoot is covered, but when it's that hot outside, and no breeze, there's not much you can do.

The guns never cool off. Leave a mag in the sun and it becomes too hot to reload. Any brass that rolls out from the shade becomes too hot to pick up. It just becomes a miserable experience, so no, I do not go shooting when it's this hot. I've been to the range twice all summer. It sucks...

I don't like to shoot if I'm dripping sweat on my guns. By contrast, I don't really enjoy shooting if I'm freezing, either. I remember trying out my then new SAR-48 when it was 15°F. Don't really remember the cold since the rifle was such a joy to shoot, but I'm quite sure I really would have preferred 70°F.;)

Most of the time in south-west Florida. And don't tell me about "military training." You go to an outdoor range when it is the most comfortable.

It's never too hot in my neck of the woods. On the other end of the spectrum, I enjoy shooting in the winter here, even if it's below zero. I won't shoot for long then and make sure to stay warm, but I've shot some of my best groups off the bench in below zero weather.

106 here today. Snuck off to the range for an hour to chrono some loads. I guess when you can't see the targets for the sweat dripping in your eyes, it's too hot.

That was today :)

Yes, I have put off my trip to the gun club/range for over a month just because it has been too (censored) hot. Today it was cloudy with a bit of a breeze here in East Texas. Only in the 90's, and not 100+, so it was finally time for 150+- rounds to go downrange. So now all I need is a few more thousand rounds, and another month of less than boiling hot days to break in my new SR9.
