I see this a lot and it kinda bugs me, so I figured I'd do a little "PSA" for everyone.

Gun laws vary greatly from state to state, resulting in a very different atmosphere. You should really fill out your Location tab and ensure it includes your state. Otherwise, threads like:

What kinda CCW class?
Where can I buy XX gun?
Is XX legal?

Are worthless without your location.

Everyone SHOULD just add their location to their names....at the very least their state...

Maybe that should be a required part of the registration process? :p

Obviously though, I'm in CT.

I agree I have seen posts that I am not sure how to answer or if I am answering correctly as I do not know a person’s home area or base location. I agree all is needed is the state but I understand why folks don’t want any more information out there than is required.

As stated in the move Congo “They are watching you!” whoever they may be.

I live in Idaho and firearm laws are lax compared to a lot of states and it is also an open carry state. So how I answer a question is based on where I live as well and if you don’t know where I am from you may not understand why I answered the way I did.

Jut my opinion.

The only reason someone would conceal their state for privacy reasons is simply ignorance, for lack of a better word. Whenever you contact another address on the internet, like visiting a web page, it is traceable back to your IP address, a unique set of numbers that links directly to your modem, or router if you are on a network. The IP address contains your location and internet service provider (which could then be linked to your name, home address, social security, credit card, etc.) A 14 year old could trace your IP address with just a little know-how. "They" could do it in half a second.

In essence, if you're worried about someone finding out where you live, connecting to the internet with your home computer is the equivalent of shooting a flare in the air. If you want privacy you'd have to pull a John Connor and wander around internet cafes and public libraries. And even then.........

So yeah, put your state in your dang location.

The first two search results on Google for "What is my IP address?"

What is an IP Address?

This nifty little site even pegs your location on google maps:

This is basic, free, bottom of the barrel software and it pegged mine within 2 miles of my house

I doubt the members who leave out their location are that worried about some computer savvy kid getting their IP address. They simply don't want someone like you, knowing right off the bat, where they are, by simply looking at a post of theirs. It might just be that simple. Don't assume that every member who leaves their location blank is a tin foil hatter in fear of black helicopters.

So a guy asks a location-specific question here, and forgets to tell everyone where he resides. The first or second reply will usually ask for it. Is that so bad?

My post is more about people who don't post a location and ask very location specific questions, get three or four varying responses, till poster number 5 say says "uh, depends where you live at?" although hopefully I convince a few hatters to put the tin foil back in the pantry too.

I'm FROM Apartheid Chicago. I LIVE in one of the Cleveland suburbs.

I have an Ohio CHL and carry everywhere it's legal to do so.

It's nice living some place where the government doesn't think that it's better for you to be robbed, raped or murdered than for you to defend yourself with a gun.

I used to have "No Va" in my location but after reading this thread, I changed it to Northern Virginia, just in case No Va wasn't clear.

You can keep "No Va". According to Wikipedia:

An urban legend claims that the vehicle sold poorly in Spanish-speaking countries because its name, spaced no va, literally translates to "no go," as in "it doesn't go." This has since been debunked.

im from a small rural part of Alabama as for its legal to CCW yes it is down here your handgun permit doubles as a CCW permit i have one and my .40 goes with me everywhere sure its usually in the glove box of my car but still yall get the idea

I definetly think location should be a requirement for thge Legal forum. So annoying the topic starters that ask that legal question without listing their state. I mean really don't they know laws vary from state to state? Here is a good example.

I live in the Birmingham. Alabama metro area. I shoot at the Pleasant Grove FOP Range and I am a Alabama football fan. Roll Tide!

I think you'd have to be pretty paranoid to be worried about revealing what state you live in. I mean, that narrows it down to a few million or maybe a few hundred thousand people, depending on the state!
