First vote on your location, or the nearest city to you. Then post a small message about gun climate in your city and maybe list your favorite gun store and or range. Kind of like a THR Zagat where we can all see where other Second Admendment Enthusist live and where they like to shop/shoot.

I tried to fit the largest cities in the US in there so if yours isnt in there; I tried.

Im from Houston. Seems gun friendly enough although Ive heard a few negitive comments from the police chief and everyone thinks Im a nut. Favorite range Amercian Shooting Center and favorite store is Gander.

If this is a terrible idea for a thread sombody lock it for me.

Currently living in Madison... so there are plenty of liberal anti's around everywhere, especially on campus. Lets see, as far as I know there is ONE local gun shop (Rusk), Gander Mt doesn't sell handguns. As for ranges, there ain't many around, none within the city that I am aware of.

Well, now . . .

No big shock, my town's not there.

In fact, if my town were on the list of "largest" cities, I'd contemplate moving.

Western Nevada.

Reno, Carson City, Sparks, Dayton, Fallon, Minden/Gardnerville, Incline Village, Yerington, Smith, Walker.

There's a large hunting (and all outdoor sports) community here.

Plenty of FFLs.

We have our share of socially impaired folk who migrate from the PRK, and bring their prejudices with them.

Most of the silliness lives in Southern Nevada. Most of the independent, "leave me alone" types live in Northern and Western Nevada.

I don't live in or near any big city. Las Vegas is actually the closest to me and it's 100 miles away. I am actually in Arizona near Kingman (pop. about 22,000). You'd have done better by using regions, i.e. southwest, midwest, northeast, etc.

Chuluota, FLorida -- Near Orlando. Only lived here about 5 months. A lot more gun-friendly that left-leaning South Florida (where I lived all my life) but still warm enough most of the year for my wife.

I'm 40 min from Salt Lake City. Governor John Huntsman Jr. has a carry permit. Utah permit holders are recognized in 31 states, and non-resident permits are recognized in 28.

I actually grew up in a very small Utah town with a city ordinance requiring all households to own a firearm.

Look here for a glimpse of our climate: www.impactguns.com

Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia (part of the Chattanooga, TN metro area).

The climate for guns here seems to be about as friendly as you can get. Most households own firearms here, and they are just accepted as part of life.

Morgantown, WV. Outside of the University, the gun climate is very good. West Virginia is an extremely gun-friendly state. The only downside is the lax in the economy.

I'm in Bend Oregon (Central Oregon) about 3 hours of driving from Portland. It is a pretty mixed bag here in terms of anti vs pro gun. Lots of liberal people in town, but there is a good mix of pro gunners too... probably due to all the rural country outside of the city limits.

<I took a list of the top 50 cities in the US based on population and listed those from the top up. >

That's the problem. The data you're looking at only gives population actually living within the city limits. We typically consider metropolitan areas, which give very different results. For example, your list doesn't include the twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, because the actual population of the city of Minneapolis is only 372,811, making it the 48th largest city in the U.S., and St. Paul is even smaller. Your list does include Memphis, which has a population of 672,277, making it the 17th largest city.

If you look at metropolitan areas, however, the results are very different. The Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area has a population of 2.4 million, making it the 16th largest metro area in the U.S. By contrast, the Memphis metro area is only 972,091, qualifying it for 39th largest. Thus, the Minneapolis/St. Paul area is more than twice as large as the Memphis area, but you list Memphis and leave off Minneapolis/St. Paul.

For better results, you should repost the poll using metro area rankings. You can find them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largest_urban_areas_of_the_United_States

The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex isn't too bad, but like any large metropolitan area, it has its share of anti-gun (I hate to say Liberal) elements. Dallas being on the anti-gun side and Fort Worth being more gun friendly. Still, at least it's not Cali ;)

I'm confused...The thread title says "Where do you live?", but the poll asks "where are you from?". What do you actually want to know?

Those are 2 different things for me as I grew up all over the country and currently don't live where I spent the most time as a pre-teen/teen/adult.

I voted other anyway, since none of the places I've lived are listed.

post a small message about gun climate in your city
I'm in the rural South, what do you think it's like? :neener: Folks outside the town limits shoot in their backyards...lots of hunters...3 class III dealers within 30 minutes drive....

Southern NJ, and I do use southern because as far as I'm concerned, SNJ is a different state than NNJ. Down south we have many gun shops, many ranges and I actually can shoot small stuff in my back yard. But there are a lot of anti-gun people around. It kind of drives the good gun folk underground. Not me though, most who know me think I'm a gun-nut. I tell them I'm just mis-understood.

Southwest Utah - VERY friendly gun area. Not too many places to buy stuff (like in a big city) but what store are here have quality. My favorite "range" is shooting from my front deck..............living in the middle of nowhere is GREAT!!!!

Arkansas Ozarks

You're considered an oddball if you DON'T have a gun(s) around these parts. I have a target range set-up in my backyard. Plenty of gun stores within a reasonable distance...and of course there's always Wal-Mart. Guns are advertised in the local paper and you can buy all you can afford from private parties.

I'm actually 100 miles N.W. of the DFW area, but the climate up here (although very West Texas in a lot of ways) is surprisingly luke warm on the whole gun thing. We have a large AFB here that is a joint NATO training base, and therefor, brings in a lot of Northerners (no offense intended), who are NY/MA in their gun attitudes. The base population actually influences the entire city (110,000 pop.).

ps: For example, there are 2 very small gunshops and 2-3 Pawn shops that carry firearms, in the city, and we have at least 5 dedicatedSCUBA shops, go figure when we're 100 miles from a lake you could "marginally" dive in, and it's 2 miles to mesquite thicket wilderness.

Spring (oh really? never would have guessed...) :D

Nearest range is Carter's Country, favorite gun store, though, is Gander Mountain, with Carter's a close second. Of course my last two gun purchases have been from Bass Pro Shop out in Katy. So I get around :D
