When I shoot rifles at my local club I clean up around my bench. To make it easy I bought a folding dustpan and broom set that takes up little room in my vehicle. Then my get-a-long got to where it didn't want to bend over to pick up my brass on the pistol range. Since the pistol bays are just dirt and gravel that presented a little problem with the broom and dustpan. My wife had given me a wire mesh basket for shaking the water out of cleaned brass so I repurposed it for range duty. With a light touch I sweep up the brass and dump it into the mesh basket which gets rid of the dirt and small gravel. I then pick out the larger gravel and then dump the brass in a small bucket for it's return home. Yes, I could have purchased one of the nut pick-up tools but I had all this already so no extra cost.

Yep, I too use a "grabber". For the last several years my shooting spot has been an unimproved "range" that has succumbed to the local morons and picking up my brass was getting more and more difficult (old body don't like bending over). Last trial was with a grabber like linked in Rule3's post. For me it worked great, even picking up 22 rimfire brass in the dirt, rocks, grass, trash...
