which 10mm auto to choose?

Recoil is just like a big .40 S&W :D Actually, I'm a bit more serious about that than you may think, in that it has the same snappiness of the .40, vs. the "push" of a 9mm or .45 ACP, but just a bit more of it. My terms as defined by my experience, but hopefully they'll make sense.

Re: which model, use the same selection criteria you would for a 9mm or any other handgun. What role is it to fill? If you're going to CCW, you may consider a Glock 29...you just won't have as much to hang onto when you fire vs a Glock 20, which is much larger.

Defining the purpose and intent will help narrow the field.

How's the intended model fit your hand? Little irritants when handling in the store tend to expand exponentially when at the range.

My 10mm's include Colt Delta Elites, a Colt Double Eagle (yep!), S&W 1XXXs, Glocks 29 and 20. The only one I've never fired is the Colt Double Eagle. Of the ones I have, I'd recommend it one but for different purposes, the details of which I'll spare you save two: each has proven to be reliable and tough. I had a 10mm Witness that was neither.

Good luck with your purchase. Of course we expect a full range report!

Take care,
DFW1911

PS: I believe Wilson Combat is now offering some of their models in 10mm.

Thanks for all the information. I was suprised by the amount of responses . I've crossed the eaa witness off my list. now I'm told by manager of cabellas gun liabrary that the 1911 platforms much more accurate than the glocks. Has anyone shot both? I can get a glock 20 sf for $539 plus tx and batf . I think thats a good deal. is it? Thankto everyone again . Spence

That price is in line, I paid $529.00 for my 20SF
The 20SF is a great pistol with great accuracy, you'll like it.
Dont forget caliber changes for $120.00 with Lone Wolf Barrels...

Sorry for the hi-jack here but Waterhouse, who made that longslide 10mm?

I can really see one of those in my collection.. beautiful gun...

Edit. As Homer Simpson would say.. Dooh!!! Just saw the Fusion sticker in the background. To busy looking at the gun.

I have, and while this statement may be *generally* true (we have to factor in the shooter(s) here), how much accuracy do you need...as I have a feeling his commissions are tied to the sale, and the 1911 models cost more?

Unless you're really planning on getting into some serious target shooting, both platforms should be sufficiently accurate to add to your collection, and both certainly qualify for "combat" accuracy.

I think the price on the Glock is decent...I'd certainly give it a second and third look :) Also, see what Haifisch says about conversion kits: http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Products.aspx?CAT=241

Let us know what you get. Yes, we'll want pics and a range report!!!

Take care,

It depends on what you want to do with it. Based upon my experience:

If you can deal with the squishy plastic frame problem, then the G20 with a good aftermarket barrel would be a good choice. It is a good gun, but I gave up on it after about 4000 rnds because squishy flexy frames just bothered me.

If you want to see how fast you can push a 180 grn 40 cal slug, then get a Witness or a 610. I used my witness for years in the truck as a good general gun. It was cheap, reliable, powerful and accurate. I pushed nuclear level reloads down it and never had a problem. My 610, hey, what can you say. Blow that sucker up and you have either really accomplished something or did something very bad.

Accuracy, get a Les Baer, Fusion or some other custom job like STI. My Baer 10mm is exceptional but the older I get the more I baby it. I just don't need full power when I am going for accuracy.

Good general all around gun to not push too hard? Get the DW RZ or Colt or Kimber. I have a preference for the DW but any are good.

No worries. Bob Serva at Fusion was really easy to work with, definitely give him a call or shoot him an email if you are interested in getting one. I haven't gotten to shoot mine much in the past 3 months due to the new baby, but when I was making it to the range it was quickly becoming my favorite centerfire pistol.

G20sf...

I have a G21SF I just replaced and XD45 with...I LOVE it! just add a Glockmeister 3.5# connector and maybe an extended slide release (order it with night sights or widen the rear sight notch almost to the white line and just add the GLOCK front tritium sight for $35) and you have it as good as it gets for reliable rock solid performance on a budget. I had the idea to get a 10mm conversion barrel for my G21SF but now I think I may just get a 20SF to match it! I LOVE the 21SF! I had a 21 years ago but it wasn't quite right in grip...this SF model is PERFECT for my hand. Shoots like a house onfire and is as reliable as it gets!

The only 10mm that makes sense to me is the Glock. But then again, I am not a 1911 guy so my opinion may be a little biased. The G20 is accurate, easy to shoot, easy to carry, durable as they come, and it holds 15+1 rounds. Also, a simple barrel swap lets you practice with cheaper .40 SW. I just don't see anything else on the market that even comes close. IMO

what about the old bren 10? or for that matter the new one thats supposed to be coming out?

i have no experience at all with 10mm (yet hehehe) just throwing it out there

My Glock 20 is wonderful, Love the feel of it and shoots dead on. Reloading for it is also a great advantage.

doubleeagle001.jpg Not to thread jack but I have a nice Colt Double Eagle 10mm for sale in the handgun sales forum. Hint Hint:evil:

I had a Witness and sold it.

No problems with the Witness, I picked up a Glock 20 and it became my main shooter in 10mm.

I just prefer the Glocks, easier to work on, way more parts and accessories available, and I like that the G20 was designed specifically for the 10mm and isn't just a converted .45 like so many other pistols in this caliber.

I've also got a KKM barrel fot it so I can shoot lead bullets and reloads.

Personally I have no complaints about the grip size. I have big hands and the G20's grip fits great in my meathooks. I like a nice wide grip that spreads out the felt-recoil.

Yeah the old bulky Witness's like I had seemed pretty tough, no cracking problems I ever heard of.

However I'd really steer clear of the new streamlined ones with the rounded slide. This isn't the first time I've heard of cracking slides with them.

Apparently the metal they took out to make the slide look prettier weakened them.

I have a glock 20 SF on lay-a-way, and in the end it will cost $519 new. I have above average sized hands and it fits me pretty good (OK, not as well as my cz's). It's going to serve as my woods gun along with a can of bear spray up here in MT.

I've heard of people having feeding problems with their EAA Witnesses. It just seems like the glock 20 SF is the best way to go in terms of reliability..

Has anyone had luck with the double tap 230 gr loads in their glock 20's?

I hike with my G20SF, Trijicon sights, Lone Wolf barrel, and 3.5# disconnector (which does NOT = a 3.5# trigger). I carry the Doubletap 200gr hardcasts.

EDIT to add: I wish Glock never made the G20. So many people get turned off by its huge grip and they never try the short frame version. The G20SF is SO much better.

No one's even mentioned the Glock 29... What's up with that?

I love mine - 11 rounds of 10mm in a tiny little package. Recoil isn't bad, but holy god is it loud. Forget the .480 Ruger and the .44mag - this is the gun that got me started doubling up on hearing protection...

If I were you I'd go with the Glock. I've always had good luck with them, and the EAA's aren't +P rated.

I've been bidding on a 1006 but someone keeps out bidding me its up to 650 now. I'm debating whether to go higher. I think his max bid is higher than I'm willing to go.
