I currently own a P22 and a Buckmark. I've owned a Ruger Mark III in the past.

The P22 (in my case) has been reliable, but it's not accurate and has an awful trigger. Maybe the awful trigger is why it isn't accurate...?

The Rugers are nice, but... the standard doesn't have a grip angle that matches common defense guns, so it's not a good trainer. The 22/45 would be the better choice.

The Buckmark is the clear winner. It has a great trigger right out of the box. The accuracy is outstanding. The grip angle and controls match many standard defense pistols, so it's an excellent trainer. It costs a little more, but in this case you get what you pay for.

Try to find a Ruger MK II or a MK II era 22/45 to avoid all the lawyer crap Ruger added to the MK III. There are ways to remove the stuff from a MK III however.
Yep.

I picked up this unfired MKII Competition Target with box, mags, rings, mount, and paperwork for $475 shipped. I added the Ultra Dot L/T. Scary accurate.

can someone please elaborate on what the lawyer features of the MKIII are?

I thought the Buckmark was the one with the mag. safety

The differences between the MKII and the MKIII:

1) Magazine release location and the different magazines needed

2) Magazine disconnect safety on Mark III.

3) Loaded chamber indicator on MKIII.

The magazine safety is the biggest issue since it plays havoc with disassembly and reassembly due to the need to manipulate the trigger during these activities.

During the orginal release it was discovered that the Mk III had a potentially hazardous issue regarding the loaded chamber indicator (some moron thought it would be a good idea to index the thing on the RIM of a RIMFIRE cartridge - a guy on one of the .22 forums did some tests and found that it would fire a round if the indicator was hit while the gun was loaded.

"Your poll is missing the two best 22LR ever mass produced:
S&W K-22
Colt woodsman
Those two are tied for first place and I would put the high standard in second place."

I whole-heartedly agree with this statement. I have both and they are great handguns. BUT the OP specified a semi-auto which cuts out the K-22 and he also said something about $400 being too much to spend so that effectively cuts out both of them.

I picked the Buckmark because thats what I have. I really like it a lot as it seems well balanced to me, and makes me seem like a expert marksman. Now it you ask my wife, she will say her Ruger Mk III is better. It feels the same for her. We previously had Sig Mosquito, that in both our opinions was a POS.

1st post.
Hi Folks!

I was looking at Ruger Mk111s this morning at the LGS with the intent to buy a 5in Hunter when the manager mentioned he may be getting a S&W model 41 7in. on Tues. and offered it to me.
It's expensive but I'm good with it.
But I don't know if I should go for it. I don't think the 41 was mentioned in this thread.
I would be mostly range (member) shooting with some private property time.

I have a new S&W 1911TA E series with about 650 trouble free rounds thru it and a Kahr PM9 for front pocket CCW.
It's getting too expensive to shoot .45 a lot, not so bad for 9mm but the little Kahr is not much fun for just shooting.
So time for a .22

I know that it's all personal but any reasons not to get the Smith?

I don't know if it is a good deal or not.
It's $969 NIB. I put down $250. Sounded good to me with some used ones going for more than that
It is supposed to be at the LGS today.
Can't wait!

I looked at both the Ruger and the Browning. I liked the grip and trigger better on the Browning.

I didn't shoot either before I purchased the Buckmark. Price had a lot to do with it, too. Was $269 too much to spend on a new Buckmark Camper with fiber optic sights?:neener::D Meh, I didn't think it was either.

I love shooting this thing. My 5 year old likes it too. He figured out that it will go "pop" as fast as he can pull the trigger.:cuss::banghead::D

So the big question, what gun to I get next?

Speedster

I used to have a Ruger MKII Government Model that I sold to a friend with some cash for a good deal on a S&W 629. I missed having a 22 semi auto plinker and soon after picked up a S&W 22A on a lark. That thing is more accurate than the Ruger was...and works just fine. Just have to replace a nylon buffer every 1000 rounds or so and S&W will send more on their dime.

Stock up on some CCI Standard Velocity (SV) and be prepared for decades of accurate shooting

I have been reading THR for a while now and I listened to all the folks who say CCI SV is the one to run so I bought 2 bricks from these folks,
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ammo.asp, for a half cent more.
I have bookmarked champion, thanks.

But my reply is about meeting the S&W rep at the LGS.
I asked him about ammo for the 41 and he said it will run anything safely and not to worry about wear with HV.
Couldn't nail him down on CCI SV, Minmags or Stingers, Feds, Win, nothing.
He just said to try a lot of different brands to find one that is consistent.

Whatever, I have 2 bricks of CCI SV to shoot starting tomorrow morning. YEA!

the model 41 is as good as it gets. just clean the action once in a while and, like ridgewayco says, it will shoot forever. enjoy.

pics of your new toy would be nice. we like to drool, too.

Ok, here is a couple from this morning after picking it up.
Straight out of the box with a quick wipe with a cloth.

I only had time to shoot 100 rounds today but man, it is sweet.
I shot the CCI SV.
The very 1st round fired by me I got a slide lock.
It then ran for about 60 shots before a shell caught between the slide and receiver half way out.
The next round loaded when I racked the slide.
The rest of the box was good to go.

I'll be at the range again tomorrow for some more fun.

Stories about disassebly and reassemble are far overblow, especially with Youtube. Just following the manual though will get you there.
It depends highly on your individual gun! I had no problems with my first Ruger MkIII. When I tried to take apart my friend's, I learned what all the hoopla was about. I had to get creative.

mikey1 here I just purchased ruger mark 111 22/45, good shooter. Doe's anyone have a opinion on the majestic speed strip kit for the rugers. they claim this makes the gun easier to take down and reasemble. Thanks.

That S&W M41 is a beauty! The only reason I don't have one is the near 90 degree grip to frame angle. Otherwise they are fabulous.

I have a Ruger "Standard" Model (pre-Mk I) that is a wonderful shooter. I have owned the Browning and in my opinion is could not come close to the reliability or accuracy of the old Ruger.:)

I think so too.

I have 350 rounds thru it now with no trouble for 200 consecutive CCI SV.
I have an Aimpoint H-1 due tomorrow to help these old eyes.

The Ruger 22/45 MKIII is my new favorite. My wife just got back from her Women's First Shooters class and was gushing over how nice it was. Davidson's has a few, will have to get to my FLGS and have them order it if they don't have it on hand. Its currently $255+tax, but my FLGS will undercut that number nine times out of ten. And she wants to get a pair so we can both go without renting a 22lr pistol. :)
