Hi folks,

A friend of mine have been shooting 7.62x39 semi-autos for a while now and is considering getting a bolt action rifle. Understandably, he'd like it chambered in a round he is used to shooting with.

Is there any difference between the CZ527 and the Ruger 77 compact?

Anyone any experience of either of these?

ATB,

Scrummy

There's also the Zastava mini mausers. They've been sold under a couple names. Remington at one point. Don't know who's importing them now.

I would say go CZ, unless you want to mount a scope. A scope on a CZ ends up sitting way too high (to clear the bolt handle). Some people can live with that, but I can't.

I have heard that CZ, Ruger, barrels will have a .308 bore. Imported ammo is .310. If you are used to shooting cheap imports there may be a problem.

I am not so sure about that. I can find posts of people saying they called CZ, and CZ told them it was 310. One guy slugged his, and it measured 0.3105 groove to groove. Apparently a dope bag article said it was 0.308". Don't know. They could have even sold it both ways.

Which 762x39 rifle

Scrumbag: We bought a CZ 527 762x39 a couple of years ago and it has become one of mt favorites. It is short and light and the recoil is not any thing to speak of, But it is unbelivabley accruate. Under an inch at a 100 yards with wolf hp`s and it shoots all the surplus ammo very well, but it likes the wolf hp`s. The bore is .311 not .308 and you can`t asked for a handier rifle for walking around with. My Son and I really like CZ rifles and we have several of them both RF & CF. The set trigger on the 527 is just great, we have never had a problem with any of our CZ`S, and the guys in KC are really nice to deal with. You can hit clay pigons on the 200 yrd burm on our clubs range leaning up aginst a suport post with out any problem. I have hunted with this rifle and have taken some coyotes, a deer, and a few hogs with it. I really think we need a nother one. GOOD LUCK TO YOU: ken

My CZ 527 Carbine is a a dream to carry and shoot.

I haven't had any trouble with the high scope, but you might have a problem getting the bolt handle to clear the scope bell. It all depends on your setup. You can also get your bolt handle slimmed down by Calhoun for a reasonable price and done very well.

I cant recommend the CZ enough, they are just in a class above the Rugers and Savages.

Yes the article in question was quite erroneous on the bore diameter.

In this extensive years long thread its pretty soundly proven the ONLY .308" bored 7.62x39"s were the very first run of mini 30's and century vz58"s. I need to slug my 1975 sporter

I shoot .308 bullets out of my Ruger Haweye.(7.62x39).

Accurate out to 200yds. Normally shoots around 1.25" or better at 100.
It shoots
Cast bullets sized at .310" very well! Group sizes are the same as my jacketed load (normally).

Very compact 16" barrel! And a dream to carry.

Guys, OP's location says Geneva; and it ain't the ones in IL or NY.
AFAIK, getting a Savage over there would be quite an expensive feat; and "imported" ammo is another topic entirely.

Of the two options, I'd do the CZ over the Ruger any day of the week.
