I have an itch to buy a new rifle for my all round gun. I have had rifles in the past in 7 mm Rem Mag and have been very pleased with that caliber. I don't know didley about the new super 7's like the 7mm Rem Ultra Mag and the 7 WSM. Any opinions on these? If I stick to the 7mm Rem Mag will I be missing something?

I agree with rbernie.

One of my "Bigger and newer is better" cousins who hunts has been using a 7mm Rem Mag for 20 years. Apparently, in rifles at least, he hasn't found a bigger/better/newer gun that he needs. Considering how fast he switches shotguns, this is saying something. :)

Between the 7X57mm, the 7mm Rem Mag., you don't need any other 7mm's unless it's a 7.62X51mm (.308).

The 7x57 is the good ol' fashioned 115+ year old 7mm Mauser.

It's .25" shorter than the 7mm Rem Mag and generates about 10000 cup less pressure; this means that it generally gives up about 200fps-300fps to the 7mm Rem Mag in any bullet weight. Having said that, it also retains over 800 ft/lbs of energy in most any bullet weight out to past 400+ yards, and works well from 120gr on whitetail to 160gr on larger hooved game.

For having to potentially hold 2" higher at 300 yards, I'll gladly carry a lighter rifle that has far less blast, noise, and recoil.

Agreed on the 7x57. I have several in bolt and single shots.

My encore, with a 26 inch heavy barrel will make a single hole at 100 yds. when I do my part and do it with little fuss or kick. My Winchester or Ruger is great for fast repeat shots but, I don't shoot them much anymore.

The only other 7mm to possibly consider would be one of the short mags. Short handy rifles with the same ballistics as the larger brothers is interesting.

There are so many choices and so little time to shoot them all!

All my shootin ain't necessarily in Fl. Sides - guns are like lays potato chips - you cant just shoot one!

I'm not familar with the 7mm Mauser. I wonder does the 7 WSM compare with the 7Rem Mag like you mention for the Mauser. Can the 7 RUM be downloaded for everyday use? Down for whitetail and up for elk?

I really do like the 7 mm Rem Mag and did not have any aversion to blast or Recoil with it, in fact I traded a 700 in 30-06 that liked to kick the daylights outa me for my first 7 rem mag I ever owned. I thought I had died and gone to gun heaven with that round. Theres been a few rifles round my safe in that caliber but not currently so thats why the need to resupply the safe. I guess these new rounds aren't going to make the belted magnum out to be an 8 track tape at least not yet.

Have you ever paged thru the [insert favorite bullet makers name here] Reloading Manual and actually read the 'feedback comments' that often precede each caliber and/or major section. You know, the ones where the guy is writing an insipring letter thanking the bullet manufacturer for making their GeeWhizBang SuperExplodingMushroomCloud VarmitKillerDeerSlayer HollowPointSolidBallisticWonder in 338RUM so he could drop that six-point Eastern whitetail from 125 yards away. Is it silly of me to wonder what kind of bloodshot meat was left on that 120-lb adolescent buck after the 225gr lead-n-copper mushroom mowed thru it's carcass at better than 2600 ft/sec?

I am all for buying case capacity and downloading to the game required, but most folks don't really ever seem to do that. I certainly have been guilty of standardizing my loads and not necessarily choosing the correct bullet for the velocity that it'll likely be traveling at impact, or not downloading for the game and conditions. This is why I've become a fan of choosing 'just enough' gun and not 'too much'.

The 7x57 is 'just enough' gun for damn near any thin-skinned game (including elk), especially if the shot will be within 350 yards. It's non-intimidating to shoot, and can be chambered in lightweight sporters that won't break your back or knees carring them afield.

Just a thought.

"...I traded a 700 in 30-06 that liked to kick the daylights outa me for my first 7 rem mag I ever owned. I thought I had died and gone to gun heaven with that round."

Sounds like a problem with the fit of the stock, since the 7mmRemMag has more foot-pounds of recoil than an '06 (for a given bullet weight).

I've never been particularly recoil sensitive. Howsomever, I've never seen the point of more punishment at both ends than is needed.

One reason I've always liked the Sierra reloading manual is that the tables for external ballistics allow easy comparison between cartridges' performance. It's been well worth the money...

Thanks for the info on the 7X57 but I think I'll stick to my 7mm Rem Mag. I was just curious about the new 7's such as 7 wsm and 7 RUM. I don't know anyone that has shot one and it appears that there not as popular as the gun writers make them out to be. The Rem Mag has been a good round for me in the past and i have the brass and such to pick up where I left off.
Thanks to all that added a line.

I have a 7STW and know lots of 7 Ultras around. Out to 400 yards the 7remmag will be all you need. After that the extra speed of the faster magnums is invaluable.

On a side note, my STW kicks less than an '06 and holds .25-.50 MOA afetr 700 rounds.

If you just want to be different then ask a smith to mark your gun .275 Rigby.;)

You'll win huge points for class & snob appeal from your friends.

Just don't let 'em see what ammo you load in it.:D

No don't really need to impress anyone just curious about the new 7's. I'm really comfortable with the 7mm Rem Mag, I guess I'm still curious abou the 7WSM but not to buy now.

As for that ought six, I agree I think it was a stock fit problem. I thought it was me untill I let a buddy shoot it and he thought the same thing.
