I'm guessing that the two calibers that get the most votes for ammo that people make sure to keep on hand are also the two calibers that have been the hardest to find on the shelves.

I don't like to go below 1500 rds of 5.56 and 9mm, and like to keep at least 5000 rds +/- of .22 lr on hand. I'm fime with a couple hundred rds of hunting stuff around.

But I also reload, so......

I always have 9mm on hand, as that is the caliber of my CCW and main HD handgun. 99.9% of the time I also have .45ACP, .22, and 12ga 00 buck.

I too keep ammo on hand for all of my guns but 45 ACP is my priority because it's my carry round. 7.62x51/308 and 12 gauge are second & third in priority.

I keep enough of every caliber on hand to at least load all my guns in that caliber at least once in case of an emergency. (An empty gun is just a metal rock to throw.) I always keep a few hundred rounds of 7.62x39 on hand for "never gonna happen" scenario just in case they happen too.

What? We're to keep ammo on hand? :fire:
I just go to the local Walleymart and pick it up as I need to shoot, .... :banghead:

No, I keep ammo for the arms I own. :neener:
And as it has been noted, the list is Not all inclusive.
You know these new plastic pistols break when used as clubs..... :what:

Lateck,

I never run out of any calibers I shoot and reload for.

I keep a few hundred rounds ready all the time but I have components to assemble many many more as the notion strikes me.

22, 223, 9mm, 10mm, 38/357, 40, 41, 45acp, 45lc, 12/20 gauge, 243, 7mm-08, 30/30, 45/70.

N/A

What ammo do you make sure to keep on hand, even if it means not taking your favorite gun to the range?

Your poll only allows a single choice.

I keep ammo on hand for every gun I own. If I didn't, I see no reason to own them.
Now I do keep a little more for .40 and .45 Colt than the others because I shoot them the most.

There should have been an "All Of The Above" choice. I don't own a .308 but I do own a 30.06. I don't own a 9mm or a .357 either but I own everything else on that list and then some. You left out some very popular choices btw. I do have a .44 mag for instance and there are lots of people who use 12 ga. slugs for protection. And then there's 7.62 x 39. Lots of people got heavily invested in AK's and SKS's before AR's became more affordable. I'm one of those people. I would have picked 7.62 x 39 if it had been a choice because I count on my 2 SKS rifles as emergency carbines. I don't expect to ever need them but if I do I wouldn't want to be without. "I just don't want to get killed for lack of shooting back," if you get my drift. I don't expect a complete collapse of the government and anarchy or any TEOTWAWKI situation. I'm not so sure we won't see a Katrina, Sandy or LA riots type situation though.

I lived through an ice storm situation where every road in the county was blocked by downed trees and power lines. Considering I have a family of drug dealers living just up the hill from me that was a bad situation. At that time they didn't have anything against me. Since then they have developed a real attitude because they don't like it that I practice shooting in my yard. They've done all sorts of things to me since they developed their attitude from knocking down my mail box 20 times to dropping off dead deer in front of my house time after time to sneaking up behind my house and firing a shotgun multiple times 30 feet from my back door. They don't seem to mind having rock bands playing all night long at high volume levels. But no way I'm supposed to shoot some. Of course in my county the first thing a big drug operation does is pay off the sheriff. You might think I'm joking but I'm not. The local sheriff has been caught by the feds so many times it isn't funny. Bodies show up along the road and there's the people they tried to throw over cliffs (I found one hanging halfway in the road and half over the cliff one night with a knot on his head as big as a baseball). The crime rate in the county is the 10th highest in the US. No need to worry though, right?

Those guys are complete nuts and I wouldn't consider being without a true battle carbine with those guys around. It doesn't take a SHTF situation to need a weapon capable of taking on a group of bad guys. A great watchdog that won't take food from anyone helps a lot. If they shoot him I'll hear that. They will never catch that dog to kill it some other way. He's extremely fast (I saw him circle cats running at full speed across the yard).

Just .223/5.56mm. I have no idea why rimfire is getting so many votes.. or why it's panic bought so heavily now that you mention it. :scrutiny:

Handgun and/or rimfire ammo isn't long term fighting/survival smart to me. In a serious emergency, My butt isn't slaying bodies with a pistol.

It depends on the pistol Markm87. Obviously a rifle or a shotgun is a better choice but a good, long range handgun can do some serious damage. I have a S&W 629 that's accurate to about 150-175 yards shooting pie plate size groups. It's easily minute of man at 175. Of course it takes too long to recover (for me anyway) compared to a rifle that shoots equally powerful loads and barely moves off the mark. That Smith has an 8 3/8" barrel so it has more than the usual amount of range for a handgun. And it packs enough punch to get the job done. It's not ideal but it's better than a .380 with a 2" barrel. I actually use it for protection against bear and wild boar but it's easy to use in a confined space because of the length (provided you have hearing protection) and it will shoot far enough and accurate enough to hold off most human attackers. It's really more of a hunting gun though which is why I like it for use against bear. I have a good holster for it and I have practiced a good bit getting it out and firing it in a hurry in case I have to deal with a charging bear some day. There's a lot of bears where I live BTW.

As my most recent firearm purchase is a .357, that is probably the one I have the least amount of ammo. That or the .38 Special my mother shoots.

I don't have a range near me (that I can afford to join) so I don't do a lot of shooting.

I'm down to about 7K 12 ga. shells of different types, 2 3/4 & 3", #9 target to 00 Buck with most being #4 & #6 shot.

The lowest quantity I have is probably a tie between my .243 and .22 Mag.

Does Need to be a multiple option poll. I answered 22 only because if I was forced to keep one it would be that, but I make sure I always have

22lr
380acp
9mm
45acp
38sp
357mag
45colt
7.62x39
270
