I know there is defense ammo for concealed carry and then there is target/range ammo. But what kind are you guys stocking up with for the real thing?
9mm, 40sw and 45auto. For target I can guess reloads but again what for the biggie?

I have no idea what you mean. Whats the real thing? whats the biggie?

If you mean "SHTF" or "TEOTWAKI" those threads are looked down upon here.

May I suggest, www.WhenSHTF.com

What calibers do you need? If you have a CCW, a HD gun, a favorite hunting gun, a favorite plinker, you need ammo for them. Keep a reserve.

I stock up on everything. Not that the SmHTF or TWmEAWKI, but because ammo can become scarce or expensive at the drop of a hat. I weathered the last few crazy times without a worry. It's not that hard really. Pack a lunch to work instead of eating out (or save a few bucks a week some other way) and with the money you saved buy a couple boxes of ammo every month.

22LR....that's what you need to stockpile. Tens of thousands. Vacumn seal if you can.

We most likely wouldn't have an ammo shortage at all if everyone would stop all the stockpiling. :) That said, you can never have enough 9mm or .380.

I stay primarily with the standard calibers; .22LR, 9mm., .45ACP, .223, and 7.62x39, along with 12 gauge. For me, that pretty much covers what I would consider essentail for stockpiling.

What to stock?.....look back in the last 18 months, shortages were worst for 9mm, 45ACP, .223, .380, and .22 rim fire.

.22 Rimfire is the one caliber that cannot be reloaded.....if you're reloading, components can be stockpiled for the other calibers.

What ammo to stockpile? Whatever you shoot and .22LR. For me the only thing I "stockpile" is 2-10k primers depending on large, small, magnum or rifle large and small and 1k or so .22LR and 1k .22 magnum even thou I don't have a 22 mag I figure it can't hurt to have them handy.

just buy a lot of those federal bulk packs (brick) I have no clue what guns you have so pick what ammo YOU stock pile.

Got a gun in 7.62x54R? then buy a few surplus cans and leave em sealed!

Thats a stock pile :D

In my case I went 4 wheeling to the gravel pit and the MUD hit the fan, grille, bumper, ETC.:D OH I even found 2 empty boxes of 45 auto brass some non reloader left behind.

Been waiting all my life for the fan. :) Oh well. I cache whatever ammunition I shoot the most. 22LR gets the most attention. I have a long term supply if I'm not too picky about what I'm shooting. But I keep a good supply of 38spl, 40 S&W, 357 mag, 41 mag, 223, and 480 Ruger. A good supply depends on how much you shoot or want to store. IF you seldom shoot, a couple or four boxes is plenty for each caliber. That fits my "deer hunting calibers" as I'll shoot about 10 shots max per season. It isn't hard to shoot a deer unless you are making 400 yd shots which I don't and won't.

Y'all will understand if I don't let this thread degenerate into stuff that will irritate Justin, right?

Let's welcome the new guy and give him some gentle guidance.

(Oh, and for long-term emergencies? I'm stocking .22 LR.)
