Coming out against the RUGER LCP and LCR, Ruger has offered good products(with some controversy over the Mini-Rancher) for a long time and a lot of folks love their LCPs and those who go for the LCRs over S&W 642s will probably find the firearm to be quite enjoyable. Kahrs are good guns but with the election have gotten pricey as hell.

If it's a good product, with a good warranty, under $400, I'd wait for it to be in the market for a year. Then again you are talking to a guy who normally carries snub .357s in his pockets and bought them for no more than $325 a piece.

At the end it all comes down to price. Reliability and Warranty just make it a sure thing. Oh I like the shorty.

I must have missread the past articles on the XR9 shorty and took it to be a pocket gun. I also can just guess that the Boberg XR9 will be costly and IMO is rather large for the pocket.

Comparisson of the two most popular pocket guns in my area and the XR9:
Ruger LCP 2.75" 5.16" 3.6" 0.82" 9.4 oz $330
NAA Guardian 2.5" 4.75" 3.53" 0.93" 18.72 oz $450

Boberg XR9 Caliber: 9mm, Barrel Length: 4.2” ,
Length: 5.8”, Height: 4.2”,
Width: 0.95” ,Weight: 19.5 oz with magazine, price not available

I would like a 9MM backup but not one that is as large as my primary CC XD40 sub compact. The weight is not a problem as much as the size of the Boberg XR9 for me.

My thoughts...

I would prefer a steel or polymer framed firearm instead of an alloy frame. If weight drives the issue, do the polymer because IMHO, it is a more durable -- so long as you have steel rails/replaceable rails.

It would be nice if in your overlay section you compared it to the P2000sk by H&K.

I would be most interested in the shorty or sub-compact model.

I've been deciding on pocket carry for awhile. I was thinking .380 and going with the ruger LCp, but I'm just not fond of the .380 round. The fight was going down between Rohrbaugh and kahr pm9, but then I happened across your project. I'd prefer the shorty. But would love to have both. (this assumes the design is a success and reviews are good).

Love the concept and "thinking outta the box"!

ABBOBERG,

This is Dr. Strangegun, I've just had this user account much longer than that blog.

Anyhow, I have something to posit to you. Have you explored custom 9mm loads for these guns? With the claw lifter, since it has no ramps or forced angle changes, it would seem to me that it'd much more forgiving of the given projectile's profile than any other pistol save a single-shot.

Have you considered talking with a custom ammo producer for 9mm wadcutters, low-angle ogive HPs, or shotshells?

No posts from boberg since September 15th 2008...has the project been put on hold or scrapped completely?

The Boberg is bigger than the kahr PM9 in every demension.

Boberg xr9 weight 19.5 w/mag kahr pM9 15.4 w/mag
boberg length 5.8" kahr PM9 5.3"
Boberg width .095 kahr PM9.090
Height 4.2" kahr hgth 4.0"
Boberg bbl 4.2 kahr 3.0"

Ihave 19,800 rounds through my PM9 and only one cracked follower and not one hiccup ever..

XD40 subcompact:
Length: 6.26"
Height: 4.75"
Width: 1.14"
Weight: 26 oz.
Barrel: 3"
Capacity: 9+1

Boberg XR9:
Length: 5.8"
Height: 4.2"
Width: .95"
Weight: 19.5 oz.
Barrel: 4.2"
Capacity: 7+1

It would appear that the Boberg XR9 is almost a third of an inch less in length, half an inch shorter, a fifth of an inch narrower, and seven ounces lighter than the XD40 while sporting a 1.2" longer barrel. Quite a noticeable difference. Of course, you lose two rounds of magazine capacity and the .40 is more powerful than the 9mm...

Boberg "Shorty"

Make the "Shorty". I'm in the market for a really sub-copact 9mm. Looking at the Rohrbaugh but I'd buy the Boberg "Shorty" when it hits the market if it's not too far away!

Once again...over 8 months since boberg last posted here. Mr Boberg, have you scrapped the project completely? Any updates?

Boberg xr9 weight 19.5 w/mag kahr pM9 15.4 w/mag
boberg length 5.8" kahr PM9 5.3"Boberg width .095 kahr PM9.090
Height 4.2" kahr hgth 4.0"
Boberg bbl 4.2 kahr 3.0"

Please note that Kahr uses "slide length" instead of overall length. Those of you who own a PM9 can attest that this gun is 5.6" overall length.

Sorry for the hiatus - I had left my day job and not updated my e-mail to get the THR prompts. Also, I had switched to thehighroad.us, created by the founder of TheHighRoad.

Production tooling is currently being configured to produce the XR9S (Shorty) initially. The ATF will not grant our license until the city approves us for retail sales from the door of our factory (something we are not planning on doing). If the city planners don't go for it, then we will either appeal or move our location, which will cause some delay (and a lot of expense!). If the city gives us "thumbs up" we should have production models ready in August.

Yes thank you for the up date. Is there anything I/we can do to move the city along...a little payola, slash some tires, cut someones grass or maybe send bubba:) Mr Boberg could you throw us a bone, wet our whistle give us some final size specs!

OK, some more info:

The XR9S (Shorty) will be released for production first.

Overall length had to be increased by 1/16" to increase the lock time - this will reduce felt recoil and allow the XR9S (Shorty) to handle barrels up to 6" long.

Here are some sample holsters (using an SLA model of the gun):

If sending bubba will help me get the proper zoning permit, then please send him!

Barrels 6 inches

Hi Again, i'm still keeping an eye on your gun and am keen to see it hit the market. By the way it rocks!

As i've said in earlier posts, Australia has restrictions on guns. They have to have a minimum barrel length of 120mm or 4.8inches. You said in the last post that the shorty can handle a barrel up to 6". How would i go about fitting a barrel of 4.8" or longer to a shorty?

Is it just a matter of increasing the slide and barrel length?

Also while i'm at it, do you collect email addresses and post updates to people on the guns progress?

PS i aint putting my email on any forum. last time i did that my spam email went through the roof.

Digger:

I am keeping a list of people who have enquired through the bobergengineering.com website. They will be notified when the new e-commerce site goes live and will accept pre-orders. We are targeting this event for July.

As I may have stated earlier, the Gen 8 XR9 features a very long lock time for a gun its size, and as a result, can handle a barrel up to 6" long. We are planning on offering longer barrels for our first offering, the XR9S (Shorty); however, a 6" barrel (even a 4.8" barrel) will look kind of odd on this. The 4.8" barrel would stick out about 1.4". My suggestion would be to wait for the XR9F (Full) to come out. A 4.8" barrel on this gun would stick out only .50", which might resemble an LAR Grizzley or a gun that is intended to have suppressor added. The longer XR9 will also give you an additional .90" on the sight radius.

XR9 here we come

Hi Abboberg, I was thinking the same thing. I'll take your advice and wait for the XR9. I'll put my name down on your website. Any indication on when the XR9 will be out?

By the way your choice to produce the shorty "i believe" is right. Heaps of buyers are looking for the smallest gun in 9mm.

Good luck with the launch and i'll wait to hear from you
