I am looking to get my first AR. Its between a DDV3 and a V5 then getting my own scope. Id like a red dot of sorts rather than iron. This would be for HD and Range (50-200yrd) (possible competition eventually).

I have a very limited knowledge on Ar's but have decided I dont have time to currently build one unfortunately, but want to get above the bare minimum.... and DD looks like my best bet.

Unless you strongly feel as though I should look at something different, please keep it between the different DD models, along with what sight you would get for 50-200yrd range shoot/HD/setup.

Thanks for the input!

DD makes nice stuff. For your purposes I would get the M4v3 because of the fixed A2 style front sight tower / gas block, and since you probably don't need the extra 3" of quadrail. The fixed front sight is more rugged than any other option.

With that, I would get an Aimpoint PRO or an Aimpoint Micro H1 as your red dot, putting the latter in an ADM mount. The EOTech sights are also good but bigger and not as rugged. For a lot less money, without any military credentials, Vortex makes some decent (made-in-China) red dots. I am assuming you want the RDS to cowitness with the front sight, which is how most people set up AR carbines.

If instead you wanted a conventional magnifying scope, I would get the v5, since the A2 tower gets in the way of conventional scopes.

V5. It is a midlength which has softer recoil and easier on the action. The V5 is an incredible AR. If i were buying a complete AR, it would be the DD V5. Back up sights will be fine. I personally don't care for A2 sights except on Match rifles, unless the A2 sights will be my only sights.

As said above. Aimpoint longest battery, Eotech IMHO has the best sight picture and reticle. Others red dots are the Vortex Strikefire, Vortex Sparc, Millet zoomdot, Burris XTR135 and don't forget Primary Arms.

If you want a 1-4 or 1-3 variable scope, i like the weave classic v 1-3x, Burris tac 30, Burris MTAC, Burris XTR, Nikon, Leupolds and once again primary arms. The Millet DMS is ok, but has had recorded issues.

The v3 and v5 both have midlength gas systems. AFAIK the only difference is in the length of quadrail and the A2 FSB on the v3 vs. low profile gas block under the rail on the v5.

I agree that Daniel Defense makes some great stuff and for a while there was little comparable but today i just don't see how much of their pricing is justified.

I couldn't be happier with my Troy TRX battle rail.

The DD rail systems sold alone are spendy. But the DD rifles and complete uppers are not bad when purchased at a fair price (like from AIM) and compared to truly competitive models (BCM, Colt 6920/6940, LMT).
