i personally like Remmys a little more than colts for the following reasons.

1: spare cylinders can be interchanged like the magazine on your auto pistol
2: safety notches in the cylinder allow for six to be carried safely instead of five
3: with the top strap you can shoot hotter loads without fear of messing up the gun
4: the top strap has that notch sight on it, sure it isn't a match grade sight, but i like the fact that it's not on the hammer like on a colt.
5: my first gun was a Remington repro (that would be my Remington Rider derringer

that's basically what i like and why i like it! what pistol do you prefer, and why do you prefer it?

Sincerely, Levi Hawken Dabney

You need a third choice, at the very least: neither.

There are at least two other designs out there that are better than either of those in my opinion.

Well, being given that it is your poll... you ask the question you like... we answer if we like the question...

I like the remingtons (have 3 now)... I bought one colt, and will never buy another one.

I like Remmies but they beat the crap outta the knuckle on my middle finger.
I own:
20 Colts & Colt repros
8 Old Armies
2 Remmies
1 Rogers & Spencer

Guess I just like cap guns!

I'm a relative newbie. Three Colts in the stable, and my first Remington on the way (thanks to Cabela's current sale). I voted "Colt" because that's where I started. And I started there because of historical interest. Because of the latter, I think I'll always like Colts even if I find I prefer shooting the Remington.

Of course, my recent range outings have been dedicated to a pair of ROAs!

My experience is limited to the 1860 Army and the Remington NMA, both by Pietta. I prefer the Colt, for the following reasons:

1. The Colt grip feels better in my hand and points better for me. This is subjective, of course, but no less real for me. The Remington feels "cramped", although I have to admit that I've never rapped my knuckle on the trigger guard as I thought I would.
2. The Colt is easier to disassemble for a quick cleaning. I can press out the wedge and dunk the cylinder and barrel, along with the nipples, in a pan of hot water. I can use my cleaning rod through the breech end of the barrel, not the muzzle. The frame can usually stand just a quick wipe down with Ballistol, but if I'm doing a thorough cleaning, I find that the Colt is still easier to detail-strip.
With the Remington, I have to remove the grips in order to submerge the pistol in water for cleaning, and then I'm going to get the inside of the frame wet anyway, so I MUST detail-strip it each time just to get it dried and lubed. Also I have to clean it from the muzzle, as the breech end of the barrel is not easily accessed with the rod, so there's more potential to damage the crown.
3. People argue that the Remington is "stronger", but the Colt is certainly a proven design of adequate strength - so the Remington's perceived advantage here is moot.

Colts are prettier but Remington 58,s are tougher and more versatile so i voted remington.

colts are considered the quintessential B.P. revolver......& have been considered to have good balance & pointability......

i prefer the backstrap frame revolvers.....remington, spiller & burr, & whitey.

stronger design, quick cylinder changes & easier disassembly for cleaning.

maybe the fast cylinder change wasn't a need in the 19th century?
slower moving battles, (rifles usually the primary weapon in the ol'west) pistols used when close & personal or when the range permitted ........

who knows but as for me the remington has it all over the colt....the whole lesson here is timing in the marketplace , P.R., price & supply....the best design doesn't always win out.......

I decided to stay away from the Colts, at least for now.
Remingtons seem to have less gunsmithing issues and better reliability when shooting.
My Remington's basic flaw is that the cylinder pin needs to be lubricated after every cylinder full or it can become extremely difficult to remove when swapping out the cylinder.
But that trade off is well worth it.

I like Remingtons but I love Colt percussion pistols! They balance beautifully and are more comfortable in my hands than any other. My preference is for 1860's, percussion and cartridge conversion.

My Colts outnumber my Remingtons five to one. I had to be democratic here and vote for the most in the box I guess...

Sounds like a nice collection.
Addicting aren't they? Much like air rifles. BP revolvers are easy to get addictedto, once you see a variation or want a barrel length yu don't have the FFL issues to deal with. You can buy and fly! Prices are very reasonable (even the ROA's).
when I get every issue of Cabelas catalog I immediatelly go to the BP revolvr section and get ready to review the checkbook with the Wife!
I used to have the age old problem of getting my knuckle rapped by recoil untill I modified my grip to a lower hold on the grip. The Remmies were the offenders in this. On my Vaquero, if you hold it too high you could get rapped aqlso. It's not hard to avoid.
Right now I want a .36 Remington Police and maybe another 1851 .36 Colt!

I started in Frontiersman with Remingtons.

I went to 1860 Armys -Ubertis

All of my Armys are Piettas (7 in the shooting stable with a couple of older ones in the hospital)

I voted for colt based on its looks, to me there is nothing more beautiful then an 1851. I still like ease of maitanice of my remmie, but the colt wins it on looks.

i do like how nice colts look, and how cheap you can get an 1851 Navy. i think after i buy my 58 Remmy i will purchase a Colt 51 sheriff. i think it looks pretty cool, and i think i could fit something like this in my tackle box pretty easily.

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shoo...=SBC;MMcat104792580;cat104701680;cat104503680

i could probably load this with light loads and use it to shoot coons or rabbits! I'll bet this gun was like the Taurus Judge of the civil war days!

I didn't vote 'cause I like them both equally and shoot each type pretty equally. The balance, feel, less fouling and looks of the Colt vs the strength, fewer cap issues and more powder capacity of the Remington. BTW there is a world of difference between the feel/size/balance of a Euroarms, Uberti, & Pietta Remington. I don't even own any more Piettas as they are way too "beefy" for me. The Euro Remmies with their smaller grips & frames are almost like a '51/'61 Navy is to a Colt Army as the Euro is to a Pietta Remington. Also the Pietta Navies have a much different grip shape and feel than the ASM or Uberti Navies. So it's really a little hard to generalize as to which is best (Colt vs Remington) because the Remington you don't like might just be the wrong fit for your hands whereas another make might shoot/feel perfect. Same for the Colt Navies. Don'tcha just hate equivocators?

You left out, "All of the above."

It's like having two kids and trying to decide which one you like better... :uhoh:

Neither is a good time to play favorites... ;)

If this was 1863 and I was choosing a handgun to carry into combat I'd go with the Remington.

For today's recreational shooting, based purely on aesthetics, I prefer the Colts.
