In all the final end all that really matters is that you're burning powder with a C&B wheelgun. That's good enough for me:)

Colt all the way.
Easy to break down for cleaning, better looks, and simple.

Junkman 01, i know they didn't have the Taurus judge back then, but it's the same concept. a shorter barrel for a more concealable handgun, I'm pretty sure they would have carried those back then as a pistol you can just jam in your trousers, similar to the judge. delivered the same kind of justice too! hehe!

I went with Remington because Ihave them, of course!

In reality, I had the opportunity to shoot both weapons before deciding to buy one; and the Remington just "came to hand" more easily than the Colt. Taken one step further, the Pietta grips "come to hand" better than the Uberti's for me. I guess my left (strong-side) hand is just not in tune with other shooters, or something.
The stronger frame (vice open-top Colt's) and the ability to swap cylinders quickly without a leather mallet(ditto) are just the icing that makes the cake. Weird thing is, my all-time favorite handgun grip frame is the K-Frame S&W; which couldn't be less like the Remingtons or the Navy/Army Colt.

Now, somebody needs to put out a "Remington 7-1/2 or 5-1/2 inch barrel, which is better?" poll.
But take your time; I'm still trying to sort out and clean up and get decent groups out of my 5-1/2!

i personally like Remmys a little more than colts for the following reasons.

1: spare cylinders can be interchanged like the magazine on your auto pistol
2: safety notches in the cylinder allow for six to be carried safely instead of five
3: with the top strap you can shoot hotter loads without fear of messing up the gun
4: the top strap has that notch sight on it, sure it isn't a match grade sight, but i like the fact that it's not on the hammer like on a colt.
5: my first gun was a Remington repro (that would be my Remington Rider derringer

that's basically what i like and why i like it! what pistol do you prefer, and why do you prefer it?

Sincerely, Levi Hawken Dabney

Mr Dabney,

In my opinion...

#1 is a minor point. If the wedge is driven tightly, Colt cylinder swaps are slow. In my opinion... A Colt with a finger tight wedge can be changed relatively quickly. (As close as to make no practical difference in most situations.) And for most shooting, I believe a finger tight wedge is adequate. (My apologies if I am wrong...)

#2 is a moot point. Colt pattern revolvers also have a safety notch between cylinders.

#3. I believe this is also inconsequential to any normal (or even abnormal) usage.

#4 is really a matter of personal preference. I don't care for a Remington's rear sight. I love the rear sight on a Colt. And accuracy with iron sights are negligibly different between the two, correct?

#5 It is tough to argue with a "first". If it is a good one, it will seem great! If it is a bad one, it will seem horrible.

Colt or Remington really is mostly preference. Both have flaws, none of which are fatal in my view. I consider them mostly equals, but for me, the aesthetics and ergonomics of the Colts win hands down.

My only complaint of this thread: That the Poll didn't say "Colt!!!"

Cheers all,
Lunie

Remingtons, to be fair I do have a 1851 navy that I love and is allot of fun to shoot and fills just right shooting with one hand, but the remingtons especially the 5 1/2 bbl is just a great gun that handles well and with a fatter set of grips I made points just as well as the navy

another vote for the Ilion, NY factory

When I was trying to decide what kind of reproduction BP revolver I was going to buy a couple of years ago, I read everything I could find on the subject...and one particular quote from those who actually used the revolvers in question in mortal combat...and lived to tell about it, sealed the deal for me.

"I'd trade a handful of Colts for a single Remington revolver."

I cast my vote for Eliphalet Remington, thank you kindly.

I own 2 Remmie's....both .44's...one with a full length barrel..the other a 5 1/2" both great tack drivers.

The Remington was a better design. The open top Colt never made it out of the 1860's except as conversions. However the Remington design went forth almost unchanged as a cartridge revolver.

I much prefer my Uberti Remington to any of my Colts. One big issue is the fact I was able to drift my front sight and file it down.

Hardly any of these fixed sight guns shoot to point of aim, but you are stuck with the point of impact of a Colt.

to me, aesthetically colts are beautiful, but Remingtons are a more durable and rugged revolver. now that, i like. sometimes the beauty is in the way something functions! there is something very cowboy-ish about steel framed Remingtons, and Colts i see as more of a civil war revolver with their open-top design. i just find Remingtons cool! not that i won't ever get a colt, i think i might get a 51 navy when i get the money. but with my Remington on it's way, i feel like my cap and ball niche has been filled. next i think i am going for a side lock percussion pistol kit! that might be fun!

slamfire you can change the POA of the colt also, just let your fingers do the walking in this forum, there are a quite a few threads that give advice on how to do this. As for your statment that the Remmingtons were stronger, well all I have to say to that is that if they were and are the colts still stood up to the same abuse as the remingtins. As far as I know the big advantage of the Rem is the easily removed cylinder, other than that it all comes down to preference.

Bushy, bet you can't stop at just one! who knows your next one may even be a colt..... you never know what the future holds.

Remington barrels don't shoot loose over time, due to the wedge impacting the wedge slot in the barrel. Therefore, the Remington design IS stronger than the Colt.
I shoot full house loads in my Pietta Remingtons without reservation.
I don't shoot full house loads in my Pietta Colts on a regular basis.
I like them both, but the Pietta Remington feels better in my hand than the Pietta Colt.
The 51 Colt Navy DOES point as naturally as your index finger, though.
I say buy a bunch of both. There are plenty of both designs for you to buy.
Don't forget the Spiller and Burr and the LeMat.

The bottom line is that any of them should far outlast us if well cared for, so get what looks/feels/performs best for you. I'm a lifelong Colt fan who has found that the Remington feels better to him.

If I can ever get an ROA without getting cornholed on the price, I'll see how I like it. I'm pretty sure I'll like it.

It's too bad you are not among our number. You would really like the Ruger Old Army.

I've been actively searching for an ROA. I just balk at paying more for one than I paid for my 7.5 inch stainless Redhawk. I'm trying to join your ranks.

BTW, what is the reason for drilling/tapping/flat-facing the hammer on the Colt repros? I have a couple of Pietta 51s and neither has the safety pins, so I wouldn't miss them.

The reason for filling the slot is so the fired caps don't extrude into it and be pulled off the nipple and possibly fall into the hammer slot and tie up the works or cause light strikes.

BTW, If you REALLY wanted a ROA you'd sell the Redhawk! :D

Colt for sur. They have been around for a while and made some very handy guns. Just look at the 1911, Dragoon, SAA, Python, Cobra, Anaconda, Trooper, ETC. They where the ones who started the whole 1911 Franchise. Doesn't that show something.

Madcrate

Nice collection and group shot.

I really like the wood on the second adn third brassers from the bottom. Did you refinish those or did you replace the original grips? Whats the story?

I did not check a preference as I like both and if you offered me one of either I would dither for ages over the choice.

Levi,

Think twice before getting a "Sheriff Model". The loading lever is sooo short that you almost have to use a cheater bar to load the thing. I've got a '60 Sheriff and I like it but...loading is a pain in the hand.

By the way, it would be my opinion that MCB likes the Colts.
