It's a Remington Model 700, but which one is it? And how can you tell? I think it's from the 80s maybe? Chambered for 8mm rem mag.

Was there a time when there was only 1 standard remington 700 model before the adl, bdl, etc etc...? Is this one of them?

Look at the left side of the barrel where it meets the receiver and gives us the two letter codes.
This will tell us the month and year the rifle was produced.

You can use this chart to figure out when it was made using the date codes on the barrel.

It is a typical BDL, but in a rare chambering. I don't have numbers, but would bet not many 8mm mags were ever made.

ADL simply means it has a blind magazine with no floorlplate, BDL means it has a floorplate. Until recently nothing else really mattered. Remington made both in many different configurations over the years.

The introduction of the SPS and CDL has confused things in recent years. Both are technically still BDL's. The SPS is the budget gun with a plastic stock. The CDL is smply a BDL with a more classic styled stock design.

8mm Mag! Very cool rifle. It should be the BDL, that is the first rifle in which Remington chambered the 8mm Mag in 1978. I don't think they stuck with it much past 1985 but I am uncertain about that date. It's a very cool (if somewhat stout) cartridge and a viable option to the .338 WinMag in the 220 gr and below segment. 220 gr at 3,000 fps MV is nothing to shake a stick at!

8mm mag is very cool , pretty uncommon gun probably even rare.
its pretty collectable just based on that caliber.

I'm surprised so many think a BDL in 8 mag. is rare... I've seen a LOT of them over the years, even owned a few...
