i've narrowed it down to these that are within about $100 or so...

-FN FNP40
-Glock 22
-Taurus 840
-Ruger SR40
-SIG Sauer P250c
-Springfield XD40
-CZ P 07
-S&W M&P
-Beretta PX4
-CZ 75B
-Walther PPQ

which is the best? or is there another .40 pistol that falls in the $350-$550 range?

The only ones that *I* wouldn't take would be the Taurus and the Sig P250 (if you want a Sig in .40 S&W go with a P226/9, but they are out of your price range).

If I could only take one....let's see....I would probably take a Glock 22

Do you have any other handguns though?

i do not own any handguns, just long guns...

Have you ever fired any handguns? Specifically a .40 S&W?

I only ask because a .40 S&W is not a round that I would start someone who is new to handguns on. There are actually many people who have been shooting handguns for quite some time that still do not like the round.

I've shot about half of them and my CZ P07 is my favorite so far. It feels great, is relatively light and the trigger breaks in nicely. Plus for $400 NIB you can't beat it;) I do love the CZ 75 in 9mm though.

yes i've shot plenty of .40s and believe it or not, i've never shot a 9mm

If the list was for 9MM I would easily choose the Walther PPQ.

It is a bit flippy in .40 but I would say try one or Walther P99 if you can.

My choice in .40 is easily the SIG P229. You can often find those used or CPO, Certified Pre Owned, for prices of the ones you list new.

If that is not an option the only others I like on your list is the S&W M&P and the Beretta.

There is no "best" here in this list; they're all fine. There is only personal preference. And my preference would actually go to the Springfield XD40 or the PPQ (my PPQ isn't .40, it's 9mm).

Hi Dorkfish88. Looks like you have a nice list there. I'm not criticizing, but am curious why you chose to list the Sig P250c vs a SP2022?

Okay, in that case I'd say you have a good list, the only others you might take a look at (that I can think of at the moment) would be a Glock 23, a CPO Sig P226/P229, or you might find a Beretta 96 for that price if you shop around. Good luck!

I really like the FN, it fits my hand well but there's not a lot of accessories readily available for it.
The current "gun fund" savings plan is for a CZ75.

Stoeger Cougar is a great shooter....I don't think too many people know about the Stoegers yet...

I like the FN from the list you have.

Have you considered a Beretta 96 or a Baby Desert Eagle?

I had a Stoeger Cougar in .40. It was surprisingly accurate for the price and bbl length. I sold it though since I don't care for the .40 round. I was too slow to reaquire my target for follow up shots do to the muzzle flip. Good luck to you.

I don't actually have the FN in .40, I have an FNP-45. Great gun!

Nothing wrong with any of those, really. I second what was said about the Sig P250c, though. I believe it's of lesser quality than the others. The Sig P2022 is about the same price and is MUCH MUCH MUCH better than the 250.

Well then, the first thing you should do is go rent a 9mm or two, just to get a feel or the difference. Seriously - even if you end up buying a .40 anyway - you should still try a 9mm first. ;)

The only gun on your list I have any experience with is the Glock 22. Not the most glamorous option, but it was my first handgun some years back, and I've never had a bit of trouble with it. And don't let anyone tell you that .40 is hard to shoot in a full size frame - my wife probably likes that old G22 more than I do.

Px4 40 - very forgiving, felt recoil wise

...

Px4 40/G

Just over 4k flawless rounds

And I like Beretta's combat sight picture w/front sight ON/over the intended target

OMMV

Of all those, the Walther PPQ has the best trigger (and probably best ergonomics for most folks), so it would probably make one of the better range guns.

It's a very light gun, though, so keep in mind if you are sensitive to .40 recoil.
