The S&W M&P compact should be on your list, IMO. Mine has had completely flawless functioning from round one. I am really digging on CZs, though.

I'll vote for the Glock 26. I'm not a Glock fanboy, but I like mine and I've never had an ounce of trouble with it.

I would check out the Sig or...a Bersa. Both are relatively safe and easy to operate when you are woken in the middle of the night and are still half asleep.

Both are dead reliable with any kind of round.

Springfield EMP. Great trigger on the 1911 platform. Only 250 rounds through it so far but it has been flawless.

My suggestion is one that seems to be totally overlooked. I LOVE my little Taurus 24/7PRO. It's small. It sends the bullets to the same place every time. It's relatively cheap, about $400 new in the box. Mine is waiting for the first malfunction to happen.

SW-MP Full Size 9mm is still small enough to carry, but big enough to get the Job done. MP is extremely well balanced. Has a 17RD Mag Capacity. Very Reliable. Get some Law Enforcement Ammo, the Federal 124gr +P HST or Speer 124gr+P and you have a Great self/home defense gun!

PS-Winchester has Very Good Law Enforcement ammo too. Especially their 124gr +P Bonded and Ranger Ammo.
