Who buys guns and hangs onto them?

I don't usually buy a gun unless I really want it. As a result, I can only think of one gun that I have ever gotten rid of and it really needed to go!

Must have been a...I'm afraid to fill in the blank. :uhoh: ;)
It was actually a gun my wife picked out as her purse gun. A S&W Bodyguard .38. The most unpleasant gun to shoot that I have ever wrapped my hand around.
I tried to warn her, but she just had to have it.
After she got it, she fired maybe 50 rounds through it and all love for the cute little revolver was lost.
She switched over to a Ruger SR9C and asked me to get rid of the Bodyguard.

She loves the Ruger, and unlike the palm bruising Smith, she actually will practice with the Ruger.

At age 70, I regret everything I ever sold. Now my wife admits she doesn't know what I have anymore, just so I have fun. Hmmm. I'm thinking of saving now and hopeful my children and grand children will enjoy as much as I do. What else is out there????

I'm pretty much the same way. I have sold a few yawners rarely at a loss, but I used the $$ for purchase towards an upgrade. The net total remains essentially the same.
Count me in the "keep'em" column.
Now, I'd had some that made me yawn; and they were traded for other firearms. So, the count did not change.

One of the places that I used to shop many years ago was a pawn shop near a not so great neighborhood. Their prices were all over the place, but sometimes I would find a bargain. I was talking to the owner one day and he told me about a massive store of guns they had and couldn't sell. I mentioned that his prices were usually very high. He told me he used an old Shooter Bible to establish prices. He also told me he wanted to liquidate the guns and was getting ready to retire. We worked out a deal where I would help price the guns and he would give me a small commision off the total sales. I could also buy guns for what he loaned on them. When I got to finally go into the "Gun Room" I was pretty shocked. I worked in a good sized gun store during college, but this guy has us beat ten fold. He had an accumulation of about 30 years worth of loaning and it was incredible. Using the internet we were able to sell most of his guns. I also built up a huge collection of guns. Many of them were run of the mill stuff like 10/22's, Marlin 60's, and Remington 870's. I did get to buy them very cheap. Over time I would sell these for profit and buy nicer things. So I have definitely sold a bunch of guns, but now just keep the good stuff. I have about a 1/5 of what I used to own, but plan on hanging on to this stuff. The laws have changed in my state now anyways and generally discourage the private sale of firearms so I am glad I sold them when I did. I am in a good place collection wise now and had fun getting there.

I got my first gun 50 years ago. Have gave 1 away. And the rest I put in my first gun safe till it got full. Now my second is getting comfortably full but my tastes are getting more expensive so the purchasing has slowed down.

I sold a few back in the day to fund other things. One model I recently purchased to replace the one I sold, at three times the price. Had I known I would have kept the original one I bought. Now I keep everything. Nothing that I own goes unfired. I like having a variety to choose from. What am I in the mood the shoot? After all, variety is the spice of life.
