Cheap guns...who has them and likes them..

I've had very good results with "cheap" guns.

FEG PJK-9HP, a Hi-Power Clone, has been very reliable and accurate.

Romanian SAR-3: tons of fun.

NEF Ultra-Varmit in .223--OK, I 'splurged' and got the 'fanicer' NEF single shot with bull barrel. But man, does it shoot. Sub-MOA at 200 yards. Prairie dogs fear it.

Swiss K-31--hate to say it, Makarov owners, but I think the K-31 beats the Mak as 'best value in firearms today.' $120 "fully loaded" and it shoots sub-MOA with my handloads. And it is as cheap to shoot as any .308 with my handloads.

I recently bought a Taurus PT140 Millennium Pro which gives me more "warm fuzzies" than any other gun I have. It is one of my current favorites.
Me too! Except mine is the PT-145. Someday I'll get ambitious and write a range report on it.

Not a handgun but I have a Norinco SKS that was worth the $100 I payed for it a few months ago.
My brother is fond of his Makarov and FEG Hi-power knock off. Both were "cheap" but both work well.
As for me, I don't ever seem to get good deals on handguns.
I guess that the $265 Security Six that I got was a great deal though considering how well built it is.
I consider the Security Six more of a "sleeper" than a "cheap gun".

I have a Llama Minimax .45ACP that settled down after a 500 round break-in. Only problem I had with it was the ejected brass beaning me on the forehead. Fit and finish is about as crappy as any you'll find, but it functions fine.

Those surplus Walther P38s seem like a steal, though I have never shot one. Makarov sure seems to have a cult following, don't own one yet either. The Steyr pistols are selling very cheap online and seem like a great value under $300.

I really like Kel-Tecs and own two: P40 and P3AT.

I also own an Phoenix Arms HP22, but it hasn't been shot in at least 7 years due to a problematic safety that pops "on" with each shot. Jammed every three rounds anyway before the darn safety broke, but maybe I just got a lemon. Too lazy to get it fixed, since I don't have a current address for Phoenix Arms and they don't seem to even have a website. :(

Had real bad luck with three Taurus PT22s that all fell apart (two were brand new warranty replacements.) I have heard their quality has improved since then.

pocketgun,

Phoenix arms current address is:

4231 Brickell St
Ontario, CA 91761

Phone #:

I have owned and enjoyed the following:
Bersa 380
Makarov
Star M43
Star M45
Beretta 21a
Feg PJK-9HP
FEG 9PR
Feg SMC918
Hi Point Carbine
NEF Handi Rifle-308 (Can you say recoil?)
Many of these were superior to the guns they were patterned after.

Some of my favorite guns were cheap guns. My Smith model 29 was between $200 and $300 dollars NIB I believe (in 1981). My Browning 1886 carbine was free, (best price of all, a gift from a friend) and I bought a nice long action Smith model 10 for $125. Sold that one, foolishly, couldnt get a decent DA trigger pull on it.

Wish I'd kept one or two of my cheap Colt SAA's when they were under $600.

I'm conflicted as to whether I should buy the P-38 for $200. I'm just not a big fan of auto's.

Thanks for the info, clone! Now I have no more excuses. :uhoh:

Malamute, if you are new to autos, buy a new gun. You don't want to buy a surplus pistol with no warranty, end up with problems, then start the "yup, shoulda stuck with revolvers" line of thinking. Buy something with good quality and give autos a fair chance.

Go to an indoor range that rents pistols and try a Glock, Springfield XD, SIG-Sauer, maybe even a HK USP or Walther P99, then buy what feels the least strange to you.

"Malamute, if you are new to autos, buy a new gun."

Been shooting them in one form or another since about 1973 or 4. Just have never been able to shoot one as consistantly well, and had one as reliable as a Smith DA revolver, or a Ruger SA revolver.

Mosin-Nagant models M44 and M91/30; $80 each but built to take a beating.

Norinco IAC 37 (Ithaca 37 clone). $150 but is all-steel and works just fine.

Sorry Malamute, I misunderstood your post. Some people just are more comfortable with one or the other, I think.

Had a FEG .380 and a CZ83 that were accurate and reliable. Currently have a Taurus 85UL - all great guns for the money.

What's the ceiling?

What is yur definition of cheap? In their class, probably every gun I own is cheap. I picked what I thought best among the rest. Could "cheap" be relative?

"Cheap" Guns

Let's see,
My carry peice is a full size Charles Daly 1911 ($380)
Bolt .22 Marlin ($175)
Yugo .22 for my son $(85)
Mossy 500 12ga. ($200)
Savage .308 (don't remember offhand, but less than a similar rifle by other makers)

I've got a couple pricey ones, too, but why pay it when what you need can be had for "cheap"? Quality isn't always expensive.

Inexpensive but definitely not "cheap"!...
Exactly.

No big deal Pocket, I wasn't very specific.

I know down the road I'll regret not buying the $200 P-38, as it would be a fun plinker, but just can't pry the money out right now.

My two current carry pieces are a Kel-Tec P-32 with a pocket-slipper laser, and a Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro stainless. Don't know if 4 bills is considered "cheap" or not, but when you compare the Taurus to a Glock, Sig, or H&K.......

I got me a pa-63 and so far it is a great gun. Got it for a steal at $70 with two fully working mags.

Soon as I order some hollow points for it and see if they work ok I will let every one know. Thing shoots great too.

As Tamara so kindly pointed out to me a while back... she's seen me get inexpensive guns, but she's never seen me buy a "cheap" gun.

Walther P22
Bulgi Makarov
CZ52 (which, now that I'm seeing more of them, is an absolutely exquisite sample)
'rinco SKS-M
early production Arisaka T99 (to save from a bad sporterization)
an abused Marlin 60 (that shot ~1" at 15 yards with the horrible, horrible stock sights).
very used early S&W 66-1

None of those crested $300. They all ended up great shooters. None of them (ok, maybe the P22) is a "cheap" gun.

S&W mod 15 for $130
Taurus mod 66 for $190
Springfield Compact Comp for $340
Shotguns up the wazoo (figureatively speaking), most for under $200

I like them used, someone else has broken them in, then I enjoy at a savings. Same as my cars, but at least I take care of my guns.

I am a tightwad ...

when it comes to guns ... I dont think I have ever spent over $550 for a gun. I do shop around and get great deals on guns, I have never lost much money on a gun I have sold or traded. Example ... HP FP6 12g shotgun for $220, sold for $250. FN HP for $400, sold for $400.

So what are my inexpensive great ones .....

Steyr M9 $259 NEW. Seem them now for $400 in store
Used Taurus PT92 for $190
LEO trade in SW1066 for $299
TC Classic .22 for $219

How about guns that are more valuable then they are sold for?
ANY CZ !!!!!
S&W Sigma (updated versions)
Maks
Used Ruger GPs and SPs.

Recently: Kel-Tec P11, with *8* magazines, plus nylon holster, plus roll-along gym bag, plus snap caps, plus ~120 rounds 9mm WWB FMJ, plus ~40 rounds Fed HS HP's, plus small hard-shell padded case; $200

About 11 yrs ago: Maverick 88 Mariner 12 ga pump, silver & black synthetic, long magazine tube(7 + 1), 20" cyl bore barrel, box & papers, plus over $45 worth of ammunition, mostly Remington 00 buck in 2 3/4" & 3" magnum; $125

The proper word is *Thrifty*! :D
