Who Knows Someone Who's Been Shot?

The only person I ‘know’ that has been shot is the poor mutt that tried to kill me and two other people; I know ‘cause I shot him. He’s still alive as far as I know.. and serving 40+ years as he was young and healthy when this all went down.

One of my uncles shot himself in the foot/leg (cant remember which, its been about 5 years since I last saw him) with his service pistol (Air Force MP) while in the process of cleaning it.

Kharn

Three friends shot, two were killed. Michael Messer and Gillum Ferguson, friends and colleagues, were attacked in an apparent robbery attempt in Columbia, SC. in 2001. Mike was killed, Gil was wounded in the arm. The latest, of course, was Mike Lefkow, killed last month.

two relatives

#1 - a second-cousin found shot dead in his car after an apparent drug deal gone bad in NYC during the early/mid-1980's

#2 - my first cousin was shot last year in Brooklyn in an apparent gang-related "hit." It was a drive-up on a car in which he was a passenger. He was hit three times but luckily survived, though the 24 y/o now walks with a cane. Says he isn't in any "gang." :uhoh:

I'm not sure that it "counts" for the purposes of this thread, but I've been shot once.

I won't bore you to death with the details, but it involved a very naughty 14 year old version of yours truly, some equally naughty friends, trespassing, and a very curmudgeonly old man with a 12 gauge loaded with rock salt.

I took a 1/4" chunk in the knee. 27 years later, it still hurts sometimes.

Thank God it wasn't a 10 gauge!

I shot my grandfather's car with a lever action 30-30. Does that count as a a shooting or a car accident?

I know or knew a few people who have been shot. The most recent was ASAC David Wilhelm (only met him once or twice in the course of my career). I know people who were shot and seriously wounded in Viet Nam (at least three), I know others who were shot in the line of duty (also at least 3), and I know someone who was shot during a mugging attempt because I shot him. I have also seen at least one other guy get shot (by a Mexican official) when I was working in the BP about 22 years ago. I also knew people who were shot in WWII. I don't recall right now if I know anyone who has ever been shot as the victim of a crime. I also know one guy who shot himself accidentally.

Hmm, I do now remember one guy getting shot as a crime victim during a revenge shooting. Guy got kicked out of a bar, he came back with two friends and artillery, then he shot the barmaid's boyfriend. Scary as I was about 3 feet from the shooter at the time, and I was about 18. Aah yes the good old days when you were trusted to drink at 18!

My father was shot on four different occassions. Twice in Vietnam, once in Santo Domingo, and once in Ethiopia. Garnered 4 Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars with V, and one Silver Star as thanks from the Navy/Marine Corps (he was a Corpsman with the 2/2 back in the early '60s) and our Republic.

I also know another Customs Agent who was shot, not by a bad guy but, by another agent in a bust gone bad. Forgot about that one, I guess it is the kind of thing that you do not necessarily want to recall at any given moment.

oh, can't believe i forgot this one, the other shot people i know about were not very serious, but-

the Quadrepeligic i used to work for , still friends with, was shot in the lower back in a robbery.

he can't feel below his neck, has a giant scar on his back, cna thanfully drive a wheelchair by putting his wrist on control, and moving shoulder, its tough.
we have to help him with EVERYTHIng.

but this happened in 73, and he is a hippy and adjusted too well to his situation,
so he's like anyone else. worse heheh. he can be a real pain and he knows it. hard to convey without someone getting this wrong. after awhile, you forget disabled are disabled when yer around them all the time.

The thing that makes me angry still is 1st- totally unecessary , all robber had to do was point it , but he shot anyway. guy was not going to resist being robbed.
2) guy more or less got away with it.

it is kinda weird to be around this guy and be pro gun at times, but i know , well - duh, if he had one , he never would have been shot himself most likely.
it really sucks.

Not exactly shot, but my grandfather's legs were full of Chinese grenade fragments. N. Koreans put them there, and weren't too enthusiastic about getting them out while they held him prisoner.

I know 1 person who was shot. He jumped in front of his kid during a bank robbery and was shot in the groin with a .32.

I have had 2 close friends killed in car accidents. One in 1997 who was killed in Boulder when a speeding drunk T Boned his car at 75 MPH. One in April 2002 when her car was nailed by a semi as she made a U Turn on the highway.

I was almost shot once, by a holstered safetied, deckcoed Hungarian Hi Power. Could be the title of a TV shot, "When Good 75 year old Bullets Go Bad".

My aunt's first husband shot himself in the head with a handgun.

When my wife and I lived in her parent's basement apartment, a neighbor suffering from depression killed himself with a shotgun.

One of my best friend was shot as a missionary in South America. Some man invited my friend and his missionary companion in and basically accused them of being spies. (Yeah right. Who's going to hire 19 and 20 year olds to be spies?) The man drew a gun and shot my friend in the forehead at point blank range. Bullet entered the skin, bounced off the skull (whipping his head back), and exited out the top of his head. Seeing that Nathan (my friend) wasn't dead, the man freaked and dropped the gun. Nathan's first response was to turn to his panicking companion and say, "I've been shot. Can we run now!" Later, after going to the hospital and getting cleaned up, Nathan called his parents to let them know what happened. Their response was, "OK son, just don't let it happen again." :what: Oh, I know it isn't a BS story because I've seen the pics with the blood running down his face from the wound.

Still, I've known a lot more people involved in/killed by car accidents.

I've been shot at once and had three grenades chucked in my vicinity three times, still unscathed. But I grew up in the southern Philippines, not your average Suburbia, USA.

I know 5 people who have died by gunshot - 1 was a suicide. My great grandfather died in a car accident, but I didn't know him, so I guess that would be 0 for car accidents. I think the reason I know more who have been shot and less who have died in a car wreck is because I'm younger than most here - I'm 22. Also, I think I'm more open to being friends with people who have drug problems than most on this board, which could account for 1 or 2 of the people I've known being killed.

A coworker and friend of mine was shot and killed by his friend in an argument about 2 and a half years ago.
A classmate of mine (and first girl I kissed - I was 8) and friend of my sister's was shot and killed in a random attack six years ago. Her killer later shot and killed himself.
A friend and coworker and groomsman at my wedding was shot and killed one and a half years ago. He was a good guy, but he used to be bad. His killer was most likely an enemy of the past, though he wasn't caught (at least that I know of, I probably wouldn't know if he was, though).
A friend of mine was shot and killed during an argument outside his apartment. His killers were charged, and I would assume convicted.
My cousin and I were shot by accident by a shotgun during a hunting trip. Neither of us was seriously wounded.
My friend's father was shot in the stomach while driving in what was apparently a random shooting. He thought he had food poisoning and didn't realize he'd been shot for at least 20 minutes. He lived several more years, then became ill (not related to the gunshot), then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

Also I've known 2 people who died of brain cancer, 1 stroke, 1 overdose, and 1 freak accident.

I just realized I forgot one - a coworker of mine committed suicide with a shotgun. I think I forgot him because he wasn't a friend or anything, just a guy I worked with. He was a real jerk and I didn't feel too bad when he shot himself.

I was shot with a sawed-off shotgun by a 15 yr. old. A downstairs neighbor (and family friend) was shot and killed by her daughter's boyfriend because she didn't approve of the relationship (for good reason.) My mom was robbed at gunpoint. I have a friend who was shot in a robbery.

Of course, all this happened while living in New York. When I lived in Idaho I rolled my car over and down the side of a mountain. I must have flipped over 10-15 times. The tow truck needed 435 feet of cable to reach my car from the road. I walked away from that one with one tiny scratch.

I was hit by bullet fragments. Not sure if that qualifies as being shot or not.

I've seen one girl shot in the head, two boys shot in the torso. 7.62x39mm is messy. I think that incident bothered me the most.

I've seen one guy grenaded. Police didn't allow the medics to treat him until he died.

I've seen one UN officer hosed down by multiple 7.62x39mm fire. Didn't really look like a body afterwards.

I knew a guy that took a .50 cal round to the shoulder, from a M2 at the distance of one foot unloading it into a truck after taking it to the range. Didn't kill him straight out oddly, just mostly detached his shoulder from the body. Died of blood loss. ND

A mess of suicides.

I knew a guy indirectly that managed to commit "suicide" by handcuffing himself behind his back, and then shot himself in the head twice with a full length pump action shotgun.

That said, I think I can rattle off more traffic deaths or injuries than that list above.

My Big Brother

My big brother (now retired from the DOJ) was a street cop in Oceanside, PRK and was shot in the line of duty. Fortunately, his partner took out the BG and saved my brother's life.

There is a big difference between knowing someone who has been shot and seeing someone who has been shot. I have seen lots (literally more than I can remember) of folks who have been shot. How many people do I know who were shot? One, my grandfather who took a German rifle round through his upper thigh in Belleau Woods, France, during WW1. I have been shot at with small arms fire and other stuff but fortunately none of it found me or friend (never in the U.S.A.). I know plenty who have been injured in traffic "accidents". I would also be interested in seeing the numbers comparison of the injury rates and lethality of automobiles v.s. firearms. I did have a good friend who was murdered but he died from knife wounds.
