RIA Tactical, if you want a beavertail safety and dovetail sights. It'll cost you half of that $1000 budget, then you can afford ammo, holster, ect.

Springfield loaded. Best bang for the buck < $1000 in a 1911.

The offerings from Rock River Arms, are very nice and a good value as well.

I hear very good things about Dan Wesson too. I just don't own one yet. TJ

Unfortunately, they're no longer accepting orders. Website says they have "temporarily suspended" accepting orders. Hopefully, they'll be back. Wanted one for a while, but waited too long.

not one vote for Kimber??

Over the past eight or so years, Kimber has worked very hard to destroy the (good) rep they had established. Sad, because they turn out some good looking models.

Taurus, citadel, rock island, para. Then of course the real deal. Springfield Armory. I want a springfield. So much so that it drives my poor self nuts.

Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail all the way

Dan Wesson CBOB This gun is tighter and just as acurate as my ed brown kobra carry and I bought it for $899 shipped NIB plus $25 ffl fee so all together $924 and it has no MIM parts Except for the thumb safety which can easilly be swapped out. Look it up and check the reviews they do NOT lie mine is flawless but please make sure you check the dates on the reviews because this is 2009/2010 they are MINT.. I swear by them.. I do own a nighthawk T3, ed brown kobra carry, wilson professional and my CBOB just to name a few and i cant say one is completly better than the other.. To me they are on the same page. There will be some people who will disagree because they are about to buy a nighthawk or wilson for $2000 more than a Dan Wesson CBOB and feel like it cant be or they cant admit to themself that there is a gun that is just as good as theres that cost that much less but there is. Dont get me wrong i dont regret buying my Nighthawk or my professional but i am equally happy with my CBOB and that is the reason im replying to this thread to spread the wealth of this beautiful pistol for under $1000 its a great gun. and from what i hear they have excellent customer service but i have never had to find out..
I hope none of you Nighthawk, ed brown or wilson fans get upset at this post this is my oppinion from my own personal experience and there is nothing wrong with any of them they are some of the finest 1911's out there but people are asking for the best one under $1000 so im letting people know.

FORGET MIMBERS GET CUSTOM..

Dont get me wrong im not saying that kimbers are bad guns because then i would be lying, but when it comes down to the best 1911's they dont include machanical MIM parts. (Mold Injected Metal) something along those lines. We like solid Barstock parts

I understand your concern about MIM......but I believe the actual failure rate in quality name brand fire arms is actually quite low.....The ones who have had or witnessed these failures are usually the loudest detractors against any particular brand.

I can't say that I have never had a MIM failure now.....Last week my 3 screw single six (which has the transfer bar update) broke.....The transfer bar itself split in half at the hole at the bottom of the part.......The gun is truly top quality....but you can tell that one piece, that was added later, is not up to par....If all the updated transfer bars are like the one that broke in my single six the quality very poor.

I am of course going to suggest COLT!

If you are looking at $1000.00 you have many quality options. STI, Dan Wesson or also great choices, after you buy that first Colt..

another vote for Dan, picked up this pm7 last summer for $833 and its really tough to find one under a grand now. theyre really nice pieces.

Im not going to say i dont own any guns with MIM parts because I do and im not actually totally opposed to owning them its just i have had to many of the parts break luckily for me Springfield Armory has a very very good customer service department also another great gun and they actually really care about the customers but on the other hand i havent had one part break on any of my customs or my DW and Ive had some of them for quite some time with lots of range time on them. Alot of the guns that were mentioned on this sight are very good guns but Sig asked what we thought were the best for under $1000 . I had a Kimber pro carry II also a gun that cost almost a $1000 and i droped it durring a cleaning session and broke the Mainspring housing come to find out it was Plasitc!!! It wasnt a far drop and it was on tile floor so i dont think it would stand a chance durring a suprise attack from a bad guy that would turn into a scuffle if the mainspring housing breaks you might as well just throw it at him.. Sold it But if you do deside get a kimber get a new MSH in metal that was the only problem i had with that particular gun..

If you are lucky, you might just find a Norinco for 1/3 or 1/2 of $1000. Very durable and all forged parts that interchange with Colt and GI parts.

My guess is I would opt for a Dan Wesson (DW) 1911. Why? The fit and finish are equal to the best is and therefore you are getting a very good pistol at a bargain price. I have two Commander sized DW pistols a 10mm and a 45acp Bobtail. I love 1911s and these are great ones.

You have a lot of good choices for under $1000

If I had a $1000 to spend on a new 1911 it would almost certainly be a Dan Wesson.

Another gun that has recently gotten my attention is the S&W lightweight compact for about $900.

The Taurus for right around $600 has a lot going for it a bargain price. I have over 2800 rounds through my first one without a single failure that wasn't attributable to my reloads (3). I just picked up a very lightly used second one, got it today.:D

If I can't get that Smith my next gun will most like be the Rock island compact tactical for under $500.
