I was heading home from an errand today, when I encounter a gentleman on an older Harley driving slower than I am, on a 2 lane road. He actually notices me behind him, and slides to the right when he sees me signal that I am about to pass. I accelerate to pass him, and just at the time I get my front bumper beside his rear tire, he suddenly veers to the right, nearly leaving the road and coming closer to turning a bike sideways without flipping than I thought possible. At the same time, I see something black drop from the seat behind him and hit the road. He SOMEHOW manages to get the bike under control, and since I've nailed my brakes in anticipation of his laying the bike down, he ends up coming to a stop about 60 feet out in front of me.
He gets off the bike, and sits down beside it. Even from that distance I can see him starting to shake. I approach him, thinking he had suffered a heart attack, caught a bird, or something like that. He replies that he's okay, just shaken up.
Apparently, when I started the pass, he had twisted in his seat to see me, and his CC holster picked that moment to come loose from his belt! His instinctive grab for the pistol at his waistband caused him to shake the handlebars, and caused all the fun. We went back down the road and found his pistol beside the road, still in the holster. The rivets that held the J-hook in place had come loose, leaving the hook on his belt. After a few minutes, we both went on our way.
An interesting incident, fortunately nothing was damaged and nobody was hurt. It could have easily have been much worse.
