I've read about .30 Luger, and how it's basically a necked-down 9x19mm. Meaning it can be chambered in any 9mm pistol with a barrel swap, prettymuch.

Some people are very firmly in the small/light/fast bullet camp, and right now the kings of that are 9x19mm and .357 Sig (in autoloaders). 9mm is cheaper and more available, but .357 delivers more velocity.

So what if a "modernized" .30 Luger were available from a major ammo company, in JHP and FMJ forms (maybe even JSP)? It'd be a modern, +P, high pressure case, and with a barrel swap could be used in any of your 9mm pistols (high cap magazines and everything).

Performance wise, .30 Luger leaves something to be desired. The current Winchester loading offers a 93 grain bullet at 1220 feet per second. 9x19mm can do that with a 124 grain bullet in +P+ NATO spec loads (and will be find if fired out of a strong gun).

So let's imagine that as part of the package, the big ammo company was making +P+ .30 Luger loads, pushing bullets weighing from whatever's available in .30 caliber pistol bullets to velocities normally achieved by 7.62 Tokarev, but in a smaller package.

If a 9x19mm/.30 Luger couldn't do it, what about a .40 case necked down to .30 caliber?

So, who'd be up for a small bore, high velocity pistol round like that? If all you needed to buy to shoot the stuff in your 9mm was a new barrel and maybe recoil spring, would you then go for it?

What kind of loads would you like to see? What'd be possible with modern 9mm pressures and strong guns?

Now, I prefer big-bores myself, but there are those that don't, and I'm curious about what people would think of this, if .30 Luger were resurrected somehow.

Id prefer M1 .30 carbine velocities myself :)

Unfortunitly the 9mm case wont hold much more than 8 gr of most powders. So..... 8 gr of PP in .30 luger=1700 fps for 93gr? *shrugs* need to be a glock to take the pressure.

I'm sure KKM or one of the other manufacturers could cook up a good drop in barrel. And there are dies for .30 luger......

"Isn't this .357 Sig?..."

NOPE its approx. a 40 S&W necked down to a 9mm. (or .355") not .300"

The Tokarev is a 7.62 x 25...or a long version of what you want. Reduce the case length by 6mm's and your in the money for a standard 9mm mag..

** Notes of interest...the 32NAA is exactly what you are talking about just a necked down .380 instead of a 9mm.......getting close. Maybe someone can make the 32NAA dies work for the 9mm case?

Just curious about your theory here...Glocks do handle high pressure but no more than a CZ, 1911 in 9mm and such....
Dont some glocks have unsupported chambers?.............

Shoot well

Aren't Glocks the ones that kaboom with too much pressure?

In any case, I don't think .30 Luger +P pressures need be much more than 9x19mm. They would be higher somewhat, due to reduced case volume, but I don't think it'd be drastic.

*shrug*

It isn't really what I'd like to see. I don't own a 9mm pistol, and probably wouldn't buy one necked down to .30, either.

But, I'm thinking if similar performance to 7.62 Tok loads could be achieved in a 9mm sized case, you'd be onto something. If for nothing else, you could hunt groundhogs with your wondernine.

:D

FWIW, not to correct you - just as a historical note . . .

"basically a necked-down 9x19mm"

Actually, a 9x19 is a necked-up .30 Luger. The cute little bottleneck came first! :)

Oh, and I like the idea of a +P .30 Luger. I don't think you'd sell it in today's world, though. (Shakes head.) Darn lawyers. :D
