Who's good with their rifle's irons?

"hps1, the true distance targets are harder for the reasons you state, but technically the reduced course targets are tougher due to line thickness and ring dimensions. If wind and mirage were non-existant, the true distance targets would be more forgiving"

Steve: I agree with you, you'll notice I said "arguably". I am not too sure the reduced is easier but there are those who swear they are. I think it all depends on the wind/mirage conditions at that particular time and place at the longer range.

DaveR:
"Hitting the target is about sight picture and a steady hold. Iron sights do that as well as scopes."

Right on! Lots of folks don't realize the accuracy obtainable with iron sights. I have a 3" spotter disc that I put 14 shots into at 600 yards (unsupported prone except for sling) with my 30-06 bolt gun w/iron sights. The last shot took the spindle out and hurt overall score due to the fact that conditions changed while they were replacing the target center.:(

hitting the spotter I rarely do it, bad luck maybe?
but I do like it in off hand when you blow the spotter disk out have down that a few times but whats bad is most of the time the spotter is in the 9 ring

"in off hand when you blow the spotter disk out have down that a few times but whats bad is most of the time the spotter is in the 9 ring"

Boy, do I hear that!!!:D

Steve:
I only have the one..............conditions were great that day and you know how everyone has a good day now and then.:)

By the way, can you guys see the 5" (or is it 6") spotters thru irons @ 600? Lots of our shooters like the larger spotter @ 6, but I can see the stinkin' thing and if it is not dead center, it draws my shot toward the spotter. I always ask the pits to use a 3" on my target.

Schmidt Rubin!

Yes, I'm going to keep going on and on about this rifle until everyone buys one. It's got unusual iron sights, but I'm finding my accuracy getting better than ever now that I'm getting used to them.

I'm going to try the 200 meter milk jug in a few hours and will report back. On a good day with a Mauser or Mosin, I'd be lucky to hit it at all. So we shall see.

Actually, the Swiss make awesome receiver and even diopter sights for the K-31, not to mention a array of scope mounts for the receiver and scout style. There are even left-hand adaptors.

But who needs any of that. I just did my best groups ever at 100 meters off hand at the range on the way home :D I got one 2 1/2" group of six at 100 off-hand. I'm no where near that good with a Mauser or Mosin, or even with a scoped rifle.

From the rest, I got a solid 2 inch group of four at 200 meters in the rain.

But go ahead and be nattering nabobs of negativism! It's more K-31's for me

I can see the 3" spotter with my naked eye at 600 if the weather is good and the air clear. Yes, it annoys me to no end. Next time I may have them use a 1" disk if my scorer is cool with that.

If you can see the 3" spotter @ 6, I'd ask the pits to switch to a 1". Puller's don't care which spotter they use. It took me a while to figure it out, kept blaming it on an unseen switch or whatever, but finally realized the large disc was actually "pulling" my sight picture off in the direction of the spotter. Give it a try, might help.

Then, if you can put 6 straight into a 1" spotter @ 6...............;) :D

sometimes I can see the spotter with the 3" at 600 but for rme it is extremly a rare case and it is not someting I wish to look at.
If I was in the exact middle of the x ring with the spotter thats fine but due to wind it is in the x right at 50% of the time, sometimes a point below it or a few above it.
I prefer to just make sure it is in the exact middle of the target and not on a spotter.
the more I learn about 600 yard shooting the more I like it with my ar15. because I know if I build my position and npa and have a perfect trigger release it is going down range where it is supposed to go.
I have been shooting alot of 600 this year and will be laying on the 600 yard range for about 40 shots on friday afternoon.
I have got it figured out now how to check my sights if the target is not clear and 9 out of 10 shots now are not more than 6 " high or low from center so far in rain, snow, heavy or light mirage or hot sun and know how to cure the other 2 shots or so that are not.
it has been great to set up at 600 yards and know your first shot is right down the middle if you have the wind right and my two 600 yard sighters are now just to confirm my windage and not elevation.
I hope for a windy day at the range on friday so that I can get more practice in the wind at those ranges.

come on out and play. thanks jon

Absolutely. I cannot see the 3" spotter @ 6 (heck, I can't see a post front @ 24" or so :(!) , but w/the larger spotter I find that somehow the next shot will be "drawn" toward the spotter, which is OK if an X but not a good thing if not centered.

Cosmo, do you have a source for those parts for the K31? Could you post a link?

Also, please check your PM's - questions coming your way.

I am going to chime in on an Enfield No1 MK3 with the artillery sights. I can usually hit something in the 800 to 1000 yard range on the second or third shot with a spotter.

A regular target for my best friend and I is a large caliche rock in the bottom of this arroyo we shoot at. The distance is right at 850 yards. Between his M1A and my Enfield, we have probably trimmed several pounds off of this rock over the years. :D

taking my time breathingproper with my AR carbine I can hit well on a stationary at 200 yds I dont think in the city Ill ever have to shoot farther than that,at moving silouhette man from the waist up size targets at 50yds I know score no less than 18 hits fairlyrapid fire of corse when I first started doing it a year ago it was much less at a hundred yads im hitting 11 to 14 hits but ive only been doing that range a cople of months and I shoot the rifle at least 3 times a month usually for 4 or 5 hours, with my aimpoint at 50 yds leading is real easy...swiss cheese at 25 yds no less than 26 ,28 only twice so far and I use the foregrip close up at 25yds/aimpoint
