Why 9mm AR?

A 9mm AR is a blow-back action, like a .22 semi-auto. It has no gas system, rotary bolt, bolt carrier, or anything else to clean.

Pop one pin and dump the guts out on the cleaning bench.

Whoa, seriously? I thought since it was an AR, it was a gas deal, and therefore a hassle to clean compared to a piston rifle, etc...

That is good news.

If you're going to go with a 9mm AR-15, do you think you should go one step further and get it in SBS configuration? the full 16" barrel length just seems unnecessary to me considering the caliber.

I would if I could! I'd love to see mine with about an 11" barrel.

You've got your choices between the Olympic and Rock River/Colt type systems.

I went with the Olympic system because it's more of a straight conversion than the Colt/RRA types. For mine, it's a simple swap of the upper and mags. Maybe a cheap mag block too if I want to use unmodified Sten mags. For a Colt/RRA, you have to switch the hammer, buffer, and get an expensive mag well. So it's a little more involved. The magazines are more expensive as well.

Check the pistol caliber forum on AR15.com for more detailed information. The Equipment Exchange is a great place to get used stuff too.

I"ve got 3k+ rounds through mine -- I like shooting it at the indoor handgun range, all the looks I get & it's a great shooter! EVeryone needs at least one! ;)
