You shot the new USP 40? The design is about to hit 20 years old.
Just paste my reply from the other HK price thread
"Building all the parts in house, stringent quality control, thorough testing before pooping models out into the market (think early feedback on SIG 250 & 238, 220 extractor, Ruger LCP & SR9 issues, old Glock 22 kabooms and Gen4 spring swaps - ongoing, FNP-9/40 sear breaks, S&W's first couple years of M&P's and Sigmas and still frequent slide cracks reported, etc.)
Subcontracted MIM parts in a lot of the competition with not enough testing in house. Many LE and Military organizations world wide think it's worth the price difference for HK pistols, I do also. A lot of people shoot 500-1,000 rds. at an indoor range and then tell the world how accurate and reliable the gun is - see no reason to pay more."
Just about any recent pistol model has fans and people who purchased them based on what a buddy or the gun-shop guy told them was great. Some people don't think it's a big deal if their pistol has had to go back for warranty work once or twice and they see other people reporting the same issues.
If your job is a type of armed professional who has a high probability of needing to actually use the weapon you don't just grab a Ruger SR9 with OD-frame or XDm9 3.8" with x-gear pack and get on a plane to a hot-spot.
Does it make sense?
