Ive been wanting to get a remington 700 to work on and build into a long range rig.......i was thinking an sps. It appears that every online retailer is out of stock on everything. I kinda assume that it has something to do with the recall, but i cant seem to find any info on what the heck is going on.

i would go with an older rifle if i could find one locally that wasnt out of line price wise. And jerkface, why wouldnt you go with a remington? It is as good or better then any other factory rifle. I might go savage, but i despise the fact that you have the option between a blind mag or those god awful detachable mags.

It is the recall of all rifles made since 2006. All new rifles have been pulled off the shelf and returned. Owners who have them are being asked to return theirs too. It may be a while before new rifles show up on shelves.

If you are sold on a 700, buy used. A better option for what you want to do anyway.

Look on backpage Phoenix. I just picked up a 7mm mag barreled action for 350 bucks. I saw one in flagstaff backpage that was a 3006. Don't know what boldface your looking for though

Yes, it's this. And no commercial entity would sell you one even if they had them left in stock for liability reasons. I suspect there won't be many new rifles flowing out of their plant until they start to to get ahead of addressing this recall. But private party sales are still an option and since you are well served by purchasing a used one I'd pursue that route.
Between that issue and the abject failure of the V1 of the R51, I have to believe that their investors are trying to figure a way to restructure or unload the company or worse. They are in a serious world of hurt.

How many wrongful death or personal injury lawsuits do they have against them now including the trigger/safety issue from years ago???? Hundreds or thousands??

I have a 700 adl waiting for the return box...purchased it this past November, and haven't even fired a shot. It's in 7mm rem mag if anyone wants it :).

If you're building, you might want to consider just buying the receiver from Brownell's. They are out of stock at the moment but they come in often enough, and you can backorder it. They sell both LA and SA, both in blued and SS.

I've been thinking about trying to build up a Remington too since I read the how-to on realguns.com. I'm seeing some used ADL's on Gunbroker in the $300 range, I suppose that's not too bad for a donor receiver. Maybe when the recall it's over fed up owners will dump their rifles and flood the market.

I've seen the reason for the recall first hand. If you knocked the trigger while it was on safety, the gun would fire as soon as you threw it off safety. I put a timney trigger on my 7mm-08 sps and I haven't looked back.

Gee, I did not know all my 700's that all shoot under moa are junk. You sure read a lot of crap on the internet. The reason none are available is because most folks that have them know what they have.

The Remington 700 is a high volume, mass market product where the large chain stores are able to purchase them at huge discounts. I suspect you are not seeing the 700 being sold online because the price the internet dealers would have to charge would be higher than places like Walmart, Dicks, Academy which might buy 20,000 of them at a time. Same with Remington 870s, Ruger 10/22, etc.

Huh, on my 5th R700 and all have the XMP trigger group. Never seen this happen and I have over 10000 rounds through my various weapons. I'll keep mine. If crap happens I'm grown up enough to not sue Remington. The litigious nature of this nation is embarrasing.

My first suggestion would echo others as far as buying a good used Remington 700 BDL. I would suggest possibly a good large local gun show. You can search the Internet to get an idea of what they are selling for in the assorted flavors. They are out there and they can be had with some patience and diligent shopping. When I buy a used rifle I am just one of those people who likes to be able to thoroughly inspect the rifle before I hand over payment.

As to the recent trigger recall? While it may have taken some of the newer guns off the shelves does it really matter. When most people "build" a new rifle up they pretty much strip what they have down to the action. As Jerkface11 mentions:

If you're using it to build a rifle you're just using the action anyway.

You don't mention a caliber? Not that it matters much. So if you start with a long or short action from a Remington rifle what do you plan to do with it? Some folks have one idea of what build a rifle is and others have a totally different idea for the same term. If you are going to start with a striped action who cares what the trigger was or safety as you will be replacing it with a quality after market trigger. You will true the action or have it trued by a competent smith as well as likely lap the lugs and bolt face. Doing this requires some specialized tools and fixtures so if you don't have those tools you need a competent smith who does.

Next comes the barrel. You can buy a fitted short chambered barrel or a barrel blank where you cut the chamber. Either way there is a need for the necessary tooling and fixturing. Besides the barrel vise and action wrench there are the reamers and headspace gauges needed.

Long before this recall Remington 700 rifles were just about as hard to find as they seem to be today. At least from where I am sitting they have been anyway. The recall only impacts newer rifles and then:

Remington Arms Company, LLC (“Remington”) is voluntarily recalling Remington Model 700™ and Model Seven™ rifles which were manufactured from May 1, 2006 through April 9, 2014 and which have an X-Mark Pro® (“XMP®”) trigger. Rifles manufactured after April 9, 2014 are not subject to recall.

So it's not like every Remington 700 or Remington 7 rifle is effected by the recall.

So my advice or thoughts are depending on what you consider building a rifle I would be shopping local gun shows for a good condition receiver Remington 700. Especially if when you are done the only thing Remington about the rifle will be the action. Also, unless you have the needed tooling and gauging I would make sure you have a real good gunsmith familiar with and tooled up to work on Remington actions.

Just My Take....
Ron

My LGS had so many rifles to send back for the recall, Remington sent a truck.
